Bryan Adams is a popular Canadian musician active in charities around the world. He said:
Thoughts are things; they have tremendous power. Thoughts of doubt and fear are pathways to failure. When you conquer negative attitudes of doubt and fear, you conquer failure. Thoughts crystallize into habit and habit solidifies into circumstances.
This quote pretty well sums up the ideas we discuss here.
The overwhelming aura of negative ideas and thought are apparent to me every day when I research information for the business articles. Negativism overflows into every personal relationship; just look at the high divorce rates in most of the world. The wide use of illegal drugs also stems, in part, from ideas many people harbor that everything that happens is bad and there’s no solution except to destroy the ability to think; the same applies to alcohol abuse and all the other things people do to forget things that bother them. All these bothersome thoughts are the result of innate negativism within us all.
Why are we negative?
This is not a religious article, but a few things we discuss do have their origin in the Holy Bible and other religious texts. We use these in a totally different context from their original intent. The first idea about why we are negative comes from the Book of Genesis. Negativity in a religious context began when Cain murdered Abel. Cain became upset when God did not accept his sacrifice and he finally became so consumed with bad thoughts, he killed his brother. Religious leaders ever since have equated negativity with sin and many pronouncements have come down through the ages dealing with how to overcome negative ideas.
All these efforts may have fallen short of their goal. Treating negative attitudes as sin using religious ideas is like trying to extinguish a fire by pouring gasoline on it. This religious sin concept was born of religious ideas and in a religious context this may be the way to get rid of it. But negativity in our business and daily lives requires a quite different approach.
A lot of deeply religious people with strong beliefs live their entire lives under vows of poverty and many, including some of my relatives, have spent their entire time on Earth planning for and looking forward to death. This is very negative; why not do good positive things, try to help those needing help, and prosper while enjoying all the wonders around us all? The ultimate negative acts are by those willing to commit suicide to try and influence some idealistic goal.
Here is an interesting thought: Negativity should not by itself be considered an evil force because without negative conditions there could be no positive outcomes. If you think about this, it has to be true; without the concept of negativity, positivity has no meaning. The problem arises because most people nurture their inborn negative mentality without tying to achieve positive results. The reason is we are born negative, and it’s not easy or natural for us to think positive thoughts. That’s the discussion of the biblical origin of our propensity to always be negative.
The other probable cause is more scientific. According to studies by John Cacioppo, Ph.D. negativity is seated deep within the human brain. The probable origin was as a defense mechanism. The brain wants to always alert the body of impending danger so it can protect itself. Through the ages, danger has become less significant while the negative defense mechanisms remain as strong as ever. Dr. Cacioppo has shown the brain reacts more strongly to a negative impulse than it does to positive thoughts. To succeed and have satisfactory relationships, negative and positive forces must be in balance. The problem is it requires more positive ideas to overcome one negative concept—five positives to one negative, to be exact, according to this study!
Dr. Martin Seligman developed theories showing how individuals can overcome their pessimistic mindset by turning to optimistic ways of thinking. In Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life he shows ways to get away from the “learned helplessness” of the pessimist to become an optimist who views every bad outcome as a potential opportunity or challenge. In The Attractor Factor, Joe Vitale investigates the spiritual aspects of all successes. Though these aren’t usually noticed by casual associates, spirituality exists everywhere in all of our relationships. Joe relates spirituality to a five-step process which many say is very effective. The steps are:
The Springboard, removing negativity.
Dare Something Worthy, power of beliefs.
The Missing Secret, spirit guides.
Nevillize (sic) Your Goal, imagining outcome.
Let Go, “This or something better.”
As you read on you will see that Joe touches on many ideas we discuss. Incorporation of spirituality in various forms is becoming a useful addition for many to cope with and conquer obstacles to success in business and personal relationships. From this point on we intend to show several techniques to get away from the inherited negative cloud that covers us all. A lot has been written about this condition and why it exists, but I’ve found few articles that actually tell you how and what to do to achieve positivity in your life.
Sir William Davenant, godson of William Shakespeare, Poet Laureate of England, and Lieutenant Governor of Maryland said:
Calamity is the perfect glass wherein we truly see and know ourselves.
Anyone who has experienced a real tragedy knows how true this is. After a really bad life event, you either realize there is a hidden power within you can use and you rebound better than before, or you will instead languish in the negative world and perhaps become depressed; in any event this latter outcome will effectively destroy any kind of life enjoyment. So how do we combat negativity?
Once I took several courses in salesmanship. They all had a section about overcoming negative reactions and most advocated countering any bad thought with the most happy and positive thing that ever happened to you. This requires a little effort both determining the positive things to think about and then forcing yourself to apply these to your negative ideas. It does work much of the time; if I had realized it requires at least five positives to overcome one negative it would certainly have worked better!
One way to incorporate this idea into your arsenal to overcome gloom is to develop at least twenty really positive experiences that made you very happy and list them. Make several copies of the list so you will always have access to one of them; if you can memorize at least five of the best you will always be able to balance your negative situations with at least five positives. Try it for a while; it may not work every time but your success rate will improve over time. A short but effective method for maintaining optimism is something I use several times a day: I say to myself, “I’m the luckiest man alive and don’t let me forget it!” This works for me and maybe for you as well.
Some additional ideas opposing negativism show how self-made millionaires approach the problem of remaining optimistic. Most entrepreneurs aspire to be millionaires. An article on the CNN/Money Website in 2002 discussed the mindset of self-made millionaires. These people think differently from everyone who is not a millionaire with these being some of their basic attributes which are worth emulating:
Possess a lot of optimism.
Have personal confidence.
Have the ability to find helpful relationships.
See things as a “half-full glass” rather than a “half-empty one.”
Rather than experiencing a setback, they view it as an opportunity to go forward.
After a mistake-turned-opportunity, they take action.
Rather than seeing what’s wrong with something, the millionaire will explore an opportunity to find what is right with it.
They believe the right time to start something is right this minute.
We humans carry powerful abilities deep within. In most people this ability remains hidden behind negative learned traits and inherited inhibitions. But they can bring remarkable events to pass. One inner power is the subconscious mind. Do not ignore this boundless energy source. There has been much written about the subconscious. Find out all you can and use it, because it works. Joseph Murphy discusses some ways to use the powers of your subconscious mind in The Power of Your Subconscious Mind: One of the Most Powerful Self-Help Guides Ever Written! Here are a few ways to use your subconscious (you may develop more to fit your own style):
Develop a way to extend your mind outside of your body (you might try to apply inner pressure to your mind, forcing it to seem to be floating around somewhere above you).
Give your subconscious a nickname (I use “Sub”) so you can easily address it.
For continuing problems, submit your request frequently throughout the day until a solution comes (may take many days).
Ask for subconscious help before or after sleep (often a solution will come to you upon waking).
Because ideas may arrive at any time especially while sleeping, it’s good to keep a notepad by your bed.
Ask for help from like-minded people; set a time or time frame where everyone in the group contacts their subconscious about the same goal at approximately the same time. Many people will equate this idea to prayer, and that’s fine. Whatever you believe and whatever works is how to do this.
Prayer, meditation, supernatural communication—or whatever you may call them—are extremely powerful forces. These are all part of the spirituality of the universe where each of us is connected to all other beings and matter in the entire universe from the beginning of time. We all have the ability to tap into this vast force, but something, perhaps innate negativity, prevents most from using this boundless energy. Here’s a discussion touching upon many ideas we are talking about in this article.
Meditation is an important technique for gaining success and overcoming negativity. The basic process normally takes less than half an hour, and is meant to clear the mind of every thought. For the serious student of meditation here is a discussion of several meditation forms. For our purpose of an easy way to do things, here are some ideas:
Find a quiet place away from the traffic and noise around you.
Use a heating pad to relax your back and neck. (A massage would really help.)
Some quiet music helps.
Relax and try to clear your mind of all thoughts for 15 or 20 minutes.
Do this first thing in the morning and after work if you can.
Often you will get outstanding ideas after one of these sessions
Dr. Richard Wiseman, Britain’s first Professor of Public Understanding of Psychology, spent 10 years studying 400 of the luckiest and unluckiest people he could find. He found that the luckiest people unconsciously used four basic principles to create their good fortune:
They maximize opportunities by creating, recognizing, and being open to new experiences.
People who have good luck act on their intuition and gut feelings. These same people cultivate their intuitive skills by clearing their mind of other thoughts or meditating.
Lucky people go through life expecting good fortune; they are certain the future will be positive. Such expectations become self-fulfilling prophecies by helping lucky people persist in the face of failure.
Lucky people appear able to cope with or thrive on ill fortune that comes their way.
When using all these ideas, you are the one in control of your life and what happens in it. Your behavior controls your luck. If you are angry all of the time, few people are going to want to be your friend. Be more friendly, and you immediately have improved the odds of getting more of what you want faster. Inaction may influence our luck. For example, do nothing to get a raise and you won’t get one!
Some will call these ideas foolish and perhaps sacrilegious. I personally use all of them, and for me they all work to some extent. There are situations when nothing seems to help, or maybe I’m not persistent enough. Many in science may say it’s just a placebo effect. My answer is if the placebo accomplishes the objective, which it often does in controlled research, that’s fine. If it does what you want, who cares if anyone thinks it is real. Try some of these techniques and see how they work for you; just please try them more than once.

You hit the nail on the head. Thoughts, Become, Things. Everyone is asking how do I change the way I think? What tool do I use to help me do it.
All the books, and all the tapes, and CD's use music, and some expert telling you this and that.
The Law of Attraction is simple: You attract to you what you think about most. So how do you get rid of the negative stuff.
We took a system that has been around for years and did a couple of twists that now make it the best program on the market.
First, we use your own voice to make change, Why? Its your own voice that is the decision maker.
You choose positive mind commands that fit your situation, record them to your computer using our Law of Attraction software.
You choose the music that will accompany the recorded mind commands. Hey if its music that you like and enjoy it just plain works better.
The program mixes your recorded affirmations/mind commands with your choice of music, and out puts to MP3, iPods, or creates audio CD's
This is simply a better way to change the internal dialog.
Visit my website to find out a better way and have fun doing it!

I'm a big user of those books tapes and CD's that purport to help you get it together. But as you said Ken the Law of Attraction is simple: You attract to you what you think about most.
For those of us who still work outside the home we can't control our environment the people we mix with clients we see the problems they have that we take a piece of. All of that tends to pull us down.
Again Ken I agree that making your own tapes, CD's or just audio files some sort of media file to go on your desktop in your own voice is so important here. Your term decision maker, my term affirmation builder means the same thing. You are replacing the negativity that will always be somewhere in your life with your own info in a voice that you will never get tired of hearing.

The most powerful voice of change is your own. You must have a Core Desire (something you want and will do anything to get it) You must make the decision, and then go for it.
Everyday life can be a drain on you if you don't protect yourself. I put my affirmations to my choice of music using a cool program called My Mind Makeover.
When I come across a great statement I turn it into an affirmation. I make it mine.
I do this everyday! That way I can protect myself from the outside negativity.
Music is the delivery system and my voice is the message.
Everyone have a great day

Personally I think the first step to becoming successful is to become uncomfortable.
Early on in my own personal development, I discovered that whether or not someone achieved their desired goals had very little to do with what was possible, or their genetic potential, and everything to do with their ability to deal with discomfort and push on toward their goals.
They say that every decision we make in life is in an effort to avoid pain, or gain pleasure.
We choose to eat the candy because we associate candy with pleasure.
We choose to avoid the dentist because we associate the dentist with pain.
But in Reality:
1) We don't need the candy
2) We do need the dentist
Simply put, if you want to change the way your life is you have to change the way you react to life. The majority of people on change things when they are forced to but the truth is, some of the small changes you can make, now, in your life might be uncomfortable for a short period of time but that is how you know you are doing something right.
Stop doing the things you continually do just because you want to maintain. You wont get results, the level of frustration will just keep adding up.
Eventually you will have to choose whether to make a change or give up all together. A person's ability to succeed will be largely dependant on their ability to adapt (deal with discomfort and change). -Read: Who moved my Cheese
Life, relationships, careers, emotions, business markets, technologies, philosophies, environments are all in a constant state of evolution. This is part of the problem; we are creatures of habit and we like familiarity; we like 'same'.
We like the benefits of change, but we don't like the process.
But it's the process, not the results, from where the real benefits come.
Whether it's physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, professional, social or financial growth you’re after.... be prepared to get uncomfortable on a regular basis and you will dramatically improve your chances of creating your best life.
By the way, the minute you make that uncomfortable decision, or do that uncomfortable thing you've been avoiding, the change process becomes instantly easier and your chances of success go through the roof ... because you got your head and heart (thinking, attitude, standards, and emotions) where they need to be. And you did what you needed to do.
You must constantly get stronger and grow ‘muscle’. (Problems, challenges, opposition, criticism, self doubt, insecurity, fear) get stronger and grow a different kind of muscle; emotional muscle, psychological muscle, self-control muscle, personal development muscle and spiritual muscle.
Jim Rohn says. "...for what it would make of me to achieve it."
