October Update.....
Things are definitely in HAPPENING mode in the ShopForT1 world, and this just continues to get better and stronger for agents who are willing to take the time to understand and embrace this program.
The OFFLINE marketing materials are now available in the Cognigen Dedicated back office for agents that wish to employ that method, or use to complement their online marketing efforts. Offline??? Yes absolutely. For a "big ticket" item like a T1 line (or larger), keep in mind that not everyone searches online. Really. Previous issues of the Cognigen Times discusses this aspect in much more detail and it would be worth your time to review those discussions. Materials here include flyers, cold calling scripts, ideas for how to implement an offline marketing campaign, and much more.
The GeoQuote Plus sites are being deployed for agents that have signed up for them. This is "Version 2" of web sites that were already extremely powerful, and this latest incarnation makes them even stronger for agents who want to exercise some control over the site, as well as tweaking them for search engine optimization.
The Telarus/ShopForT1 management attended a major industry trade show in Chicago in September. It was very interesting to note the reaction of the vendors to seeing people with ShopForT1 polo shirts -- a few years ago, the reaction was something like "who are these guys" and "the business model will never work", changing now to reactions like "we NEED to meet with these guys" and "whatever they are doing, they are obviously doing it RIGHT".
ShopForT1 management was scheduled in back to back meetings for the entire three days of the conference in order to accommodate all the vendors and carriers that wanted to meet with them. They are seeing the success of ShopForT1 as it continues to increase every month and are anxious to join the party. The result of these meetings has not yet been put in concrete, but carriers where ShopForT1 has an existing affiliation were discussing commission increases, and there may even be a new carrier coming onboard in the not-too-distant future. Carriers are bending over backwards to get our attention, and one of the primary carriers used will be providing ShopForT1 something that they have NEVER done for any other partner, which will make things even better!
One of the things that some agents tend to forget is that YOU the agent does NOT need to be a technical guru or have responsibility to close the sale. You simply need to find the opportunity, and then let the ShopForT1 technical consultants work with the customer to close the sale ON YOUR BEHALF, where the commission is then split. It doesn't get any better than that!
If you have not yet gotten your feet wet with the ShopForT1 program, we would strongly encourage you to do so. There is a wealth of training material and "getting started" information in your back office. Note that this is a different back office than your normal Cognigen back office -- your ShopForT1 back office is located at http://CognigenDedicated.com where you login with your Cognigen agent ID and password. You will be very glad that you took the time to understand what is here and how you can participate to get a piece of the action.
God Bless,
Michael

Below is the ShopForT1 portion of the November "Cognigen Times".....
ShopForT1 News & &Updates
The sales and success stories at ShopForT1 continue to grow on almost a daily basis. The new GeoQuote Plus v2.0 sites are now almost fully deployed for agents who have ordered them, and the abilities of the incredibly technical web programming that is happening in the background continues to create miracles and leave the competition in the dust.
Almost all of the offline marketing material is now available in the ShopForT1 back office. Customized materials can be ordered at prices that barely reflect the actual production and shipping costs. This includes banners, flyers, product sheets and much more. There are also workbooks and outlines available for download there to help you understand how to most effectively distribute this material and get it into the hands of the decision-makers/
Why do offline marketing when online marketing is so much "easier"? Keep in mind that statistics show that with typical online marketing, about 2 in 50 leads close, or about 2%. Contrast that with the typical OFFLINE order close ratio of about 1 in 3, or 33%. As previous issues of the Cognigen Times have noted in this space, that "close ratio" affects your commission split. In other words, if your close rate was 33% instead of 2%, your commission split percentage would be almost DOUBLED.
You may want to go to the ShopForT1 back office and review the training call from Thursday 10/27/05, where Adam Edwards, CEO of Telarus/ShopForT1 and Jon Arnold, ShopForT1 Tech Consultant both gave several examples and ideas of how to do effective and inexpensive offline marketing.
Some accolades that ShopForT1 has been recognized for from many of the carriers that they represent which you may find interesting as well as encouraging:
- ACC Business/AT&T – Platinum Partner Award (Top 1%).
- Broadwing/Focal – Most New Customers Sold 2005 YTD.
- New Edge – Most Valuable Partner Council 2004, 2005.
- Netifice - Top producing Master Agency - Single site data T1's 2004, 2005.
- Megapath – Top 5 Agent 2005 YTD.
- PowerNet Global – Top 5 Agent 2005 YTD.
- Network Innovations - Top Agent 2004, Q1, Q2, Q3 2005.
- UCN – Stellar Sales Performer 2005 (Top 5 2005 YTD).
- Xspedius - Fastest Growing Agent in 2004, Top 10 Agent 2005.
You see, it's not just 1 or 2 carriers that are recognizing what ShopForT1 has meant to them, it's all these carriers shown above. Any Master Agency will tell you that it's not an easy task to get even ONE such award or carrier recognition, let alone NINE of them. It's one thing to talk the talk, but ShopForT1 has continually demonstrated to their carriers that they are also extremely capable of walking the walk.
Know that ShopForT1 did not receive these accolades via any "solo" effort. Rather, they remain well aware that their successes and awards are a direct result of the leads from agents -- agents who have taken the time to understand, grasp, deploy, and implement the marketing methods as explained in detail in the back office and training calls. Recognizing the importance of lead agents, this also provides incentive to ShopForT1 management to continue to add more marketing and training materials to the back office, such as the recent addition of the offline marketing materials.
We encourage you to get onboard with the ShopForT1 program -- become an active participant by taking the time to understand what this can mean for you and your commission check, and get started. Do it today!
God Bless,
Michael

Below is from my buddy Jon Arnold. Top ShopForT1 Technical Consultant and Closer......
========
November SFT1 Training Call
There will be no ShopForT1 training call this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The next ShopForT1 training call will be held on Thursday December 8th at the usual time.
Thankful Thoughts For Thanksgiving
I can hardly believe that Thanksgiving is tomorrow already. Time has flown by and my apologies for not keeping in closer touch with you. (That said, remember that email works BOTH ways...) In my under-abundance of spare time over the past month, I have been reading an excellent book that has been on the best-seller list for quite a long time by Rick Warren. One of the keys that struck me, even though we all probably know this subconsciously is "it's not all about me". We all know people who take exactly the opposite approach to life, but I am finding that by understanding and embracing the approach of "it's not all about me" leads to ultimately more success as well as more peace of mind.
At this time of year when we are supposed to be thinking about what we are thankful for, have you given thought to what you are thankful for? Of course, family, kids, spouse, friends, the fact that you were not audited by the IRS this year, and similar trains of thought. But I would encourage you to think outside the box for a moment and expand your "thankful list". Are you thankful for Cognigen and ShopForT1? If not, why not? Both Cognigen and ShopForT1 are very highly ranked on my personal "thankful list". Why? Because both have given me an opportunity to demonstrate that "it's not all about me". With your help from closed leads, per my commitment to you, I have made donations this year to both the Tsunami Relief Fund as well as the Hurricane Katrinca Relief Fund and others. I have been blessed by you and the leads you submitted that closed, and I wanted to share that blessing with others that I don't even know because of the natural disaster they went through. It was the right thing to do, because "it's not all about me".
In the same sense at this special time of Thanksgiving, I am thankful for you. I want to see you succeed in ever-increasing commissions from ShopForT1, so I try to keep in touch occasionally to let you know the best way to do that, based on my view from the "front lines". Yes, encouraging you and helping you helps me also, but again, it's not all about me. I would be extraordinarily happy for you if my tips and encouragement got you to the point where the commission split between you and me was 50/50 instead of 85/15. Really, nothing would make me happier. I would absolutely salivate over seeing a lead come in from you and knowing that you are "getting it" and this lead has a 50% chance of closing, as opposed to the typical Internet-generated lead close ratio of 2%. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with Internet-generated leads, since those require minimal effort on your part outside of some face time with your computer (significant face time, if done properly), but the REALITY of it is that, as explained in detail in previous issues of my newsletter and the Cognigen Times, an Internet-generated lead typically has about a 2% close ratio, as opposed to offline marketing leads that are much closer to 33%, more than a 1600% productivity improvement.
Why mention this to you at all? Because it's not all about me. It's about you as well. In embracing my role as a ShopForT1 closer as well as a Cognigen National Rep and National Trainer, it is part of my job to demonstrate that it's not all about me, but rather to help you understand what to do and how to do what you are currently doing BETTER. That said, it is NOT my job to force you to do anything you don't want to do, but I can sleep well at night knowing that at least I told you like it is, did not sugar-coat anything, which allows you to make your own decisions as far as how to proceed in the future. As frequently said by my father-in-law, a retired farmer: "it's my job to plant the seed, water it and fertizilize it, but I have zero responsibility or ability to make the wheat grow".
Let's look at some differences between Internet-generated leads versus leads that are done via offline marketing. Internet leads frequently have a bogus phone number and/or a bogus email address. These can be thrown into the trash almost immediately. If a lead enters an email address of "spam@yahoo.com", that gives both of us a sense of how serious they really are. (That is an actual example, and some email addresses are even more creatively entertaining). A phone number of 303-555-1212 is not going to yield any valid results for T1 circuits in the Denver area, or anywhere else. An address of "1 Anywhere Drive" may be valid but not likely. (For the sake of illustration, let's not discuss the main intersection downtown in Lake Jackson, Texas, which is the intersection of "This Way" and "That Way". Really.) Missing zip code? I can handle that, I know where to (and have) looked up zip codes so that I can generate a valid quote for a customer.
Now contrast that with offline marketing, where you are distributing or mailing a flyer, or even meeting with a potential customer face to face, perhaps even taking the time to gather his information and hand-enter the lead yourself. The end result is not nearly the degree of bogus information, and this fact has been demonstrated and proven time and time again. Also keep in mind the "perception factor" -- just because they found you via a search engine on the Internet, a lot of people contend that they can also find porn, drugs, and low mortgage rates via a Google search, so why is shopping for a T1 line on the Internet any different? Good point -- perhaps not necessarily a valid point, but remember that reality is in the eyes of the perceiver, and if that is what they perceive, then for them it is reality. The point being that a lot of people do not search for products online. Gasp! Hard to believe in today's connected world, but it's true. The equal truism is that their money is every bit as green as the money from someone who DOES shop online for a T1, and their NEED for a reliable T1 from a top/first tier carrier at the best pricing possible is also every bit as real.
What have you done to date with the offline marketing material, which has now been available for almost two months? Have you downloaded any flyers to distribute in office parks and businesses in your area? Have you customized those flyers and done a US postal mail campaign? If not, why not? Printing your customized flyer on a decent inkjet printer will probably cost you less than a dime a copy. After envelopes and postage, your investment into a highly targeted lead is less than 50 cents. There are companies on the Internet that charge as much as 10 tens that amount to get sales/marketing information into the "hands" of a company decision maker, and when it comes in as email to that decision maker, does it have any more credibility than other emails for low mortgage rates or ... uh ... other things. That is assuming that the recipient's email spam filter doesn't catch it and filter it out altogether, in which case you've spent $5 or more for a lead where the recipient will never see your material. US postal mail is simplicity defined in that sense, since it will at some point get into the hands of a real person. And with the professionally designed materials in your back office, it DOES look professional, it does NOT look cheap and 'spammy". Even better, get dressed up a bit and drop off some flyers in person at some local businesses and office parks. The instructions for how to approach this are all detailed in your back office.
Are you currently having more success than you can handle? If so, good for you, I am happy for you. If not, perhaps take a hint from the old joke: "Man: Doctor, it hurts when I do this. Doctor: Ok then just don't do that any more". I am not suggesting that you REPLACE your online Internet marketing campaigns, but I am suggesting that you COMPLEMENT those campaigns with some OFFLINE marketing practices. The agents who have started to employ these techniques are seeing a lot of success, and I would encourage you to get involved, map out a plan, and get your piece of that action.

Below is the December SFT1 newsletter from Jon Arnold....
==============
December SFT1 Training Call
There was be no ShopForT1 training call in November due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but the most recent ShopForT1 training call was held on Thursday December 8th. The focus of that call was the GeoQuote Plus sites and remote hosting options. If you missed that call, you may want to go into your SFT1 back office and listen to it, since the call was recorded and is archived there (with all the other calls) for you to listen to as time permits.
Carrier News
The SFT1 carriers continue to be truly excited with what SFT1 has done for them, and as a direct result, they keep on throwing spiffs and various incentives in our direction to keep it up. You have to admit and concede that $$$ is a powerful motivator, especially when those $$$ can end up in YOUR pockets. Some highlights of carrier news is recapped below:
Nuvox - Business VOIP Vendor
SFT1 finally has a business VOIP vendor in the form of Nuvox. Nuvox has a nationwide footprint and provides a very cost effective VOIP solution for customers. Nuvox not only provides the VOIP component but also provides the bandwidth. Through 6/30/2006, Nuvox is offering a sizeable spiff per sale, and after the first 8 sales the spiff goes up, with an even healthier spiff after the 16th circuit sold. Since SFT1 is typically counted as a single agency, it should be a no-brainer to come up with that top-end spiff level and generate some healthy spiffs for you.
Business VOIP is a market that is truly taking off and has gained attention from almost every type of business and business owner. VOIP can provide an incredibly cost effective solution to a business. Be sure to keep this offering in your quiver of possibilities when you are marketing to potential customers.
New Carriers
Over the past couple of months, SFT1 now has Master Agent agreements setup with Nuvox, SBC, BellSouth, and PacBell. Although these are not yet showing up as part of the realtime quotes on the quote pages, we are able to get pricing for these carriers for the markets they service, write sales contracts, and the effort to fully integrate these carriers in the quote pages is well under way.
Special Pricing In Carrier's Sweet Spot Markets
One of our primary carriers has announced that in their sweet spot markets, they are offering a full T1 including router and zero installation fee on a 3 year contract for $400 per month. This is an incredible price from a top/first tier carrier, and this is not a promotion but should be continuing well into 2006. Cities where this pricing applies would include most areas of:
Birmingham, Mobile, AL
Montgomery, AL
Little Rock, AR
Tucson, AZ
Colorado Springs, CO
Washington, DC
Most major coastal cities in FL
Atlanta, GA
Columbus, GA
Louisville, KY
Baton Rouge, LA
Lafayette, LA
New Orleans, LA
Lake Charles, LA
Baltimore, MD
Kansas City, MO/KS
Greensboro, NC
Winston-Salem, NC
Albuquerque, NM
Las Vegas, NV
Tulsa, OK
Columbia, Greenville, SC
Memphis, TN
Nashville, TN
Austin, TX
Dallas, TX
El Paso, TX
Houston, TX
San Antonio, TX
Irvine, TX
Metro Northern Virginia, VA
This carrier also offers a standard spiff per sale, where the amount of the spiff is based on a percentage of the monthly charge and the contract term; i.e., 3 year term = 40%, 2 year term = 30%, 1 year term = 25%.
California Remains HOT For Spiffs
One of our carriers that focuses on the California market has more spiffs available for various products that can be discussed in this space. They have spiffs on Voice circuits, Integrated circuits, bonded T1 packages and much more, all at very aggressive pricing levels. This carrier is an extremely strong carrier in California, and is able to boast a "churn rate" (customers that do not renew after contract expiration) of well under 5%. Hey, when you have a great product, great service, and great price, getting a customer to renew is a no no-brainer as this carrier continues to demonstrate!
Earthlink To Buy New Edge
EarthLink Inc., one of the nation's largest Internet service providers, recently said it agreed to acquire privately held New Edge Networks for $144 million in cash and stock. Atlanta-based EarthLink said the purchase will expand its presence in the small and medium business market by giving it one of the largest data communications networks in the country. The Vancouver, Wash.-based company's customer base is expected to generate about $120 million in 2005 revenue.
I understand that New Edge is going to retain its name and New Edge continues to be a very strong offering in markets that they service. The New Edge sweet spot cities, where they can offer their "Metro" T1 service as low as $420 including router on a 3 year contract would include:
Atlanta, GA
Baltimore, MD
Boston, MA
Chicago, IL
Dallas, TX
Denver, CO
Detroit, MI
Houston, TX
Indianapolis, IN
Los Angeles, CA
Miami, FL
Nashville, TN
Newark, NJ
New York, NY
Philadelphia, PA
Phoenix, AZ
Portland, OR
Sacramento, CA
Salt Lake City, UT
San Diego, CA
San Francisco & Bay Area, CA
San Jose, CA
Seattle, WA
Washington, DC
The list above is NOT exhaustive, nor does it discuss each of our carriers in depth. But I wanted to let you know what is happening here. The bottom line information you should take away from this is that our carriers are NOTICING what ShopForT1 has done for them, and they want more of it by continuing to offer more and more incentives and spiffs. If you are doing marketing, either online or offline, you may want to take note of the locations where these carriers have sweet spots so that you can maximize your marketing efforts. The only thing better than a SALE is a SALE WITH A SPIFF!
Also keep in mind that a T1 line is not the only offering that ShopForT1 has. Many agents are targeting the larger circuits such as DS3 circuits and OC-xx circuits. Yes, there are customers out there that need this size of bandwidth. A typical full DS3 circuit is equivalent in bandwidth to 28 (yes, twenty eight) T1 lines, and depending on the location are priced from $5000-$8000 per month. OC-xx circuits can also be lucrative; at the low end, an OC-3 circuit is equivalent bandwidth to about 100 T1 lines and typically sells for (again, depending on location) between $16k-$22k per month. Yes, there are companies out there that have circuits of this size, and the very interesting thing to note is that if they have had this circuit in place for more than 2-3 years, they are probably paying more than they need to for it, sometimes WAY more.
Relationship Marketing
There are many components that go into making a sale. There is price, the product offering, the price, the quality and reputation of the provider, the price, the level of customer service, and oh yea, did I mention price? But is has been said that this accounts for only about 50% of the sales process -- the remainder is based on relationship. I've known this for years but it really hit me recently in a couple of particular situations that I wanted to share with you.
I contacted a lead and we discussed his options, the carriers, and the pricing. He said he needed to do his homework and think about it. I called him back the next day and he said that he wanted references. Not a problem, many customers ask for references. But he didn't want references for the carrier, he was entirely comfortable with the carrier. He wanted references from ME. Wow, I hadn't encountered that one before!
So I contacted several customers where I had sold them a circuit from that same carrier and asked them if they would mind being a reference, explaining the situation. I made three calls and got three enthusiastic positive responses with willingness to be a reference. All three customers I contacted got to talking with me, telling me that the circuit was working well, telling me how their business was going, and it was like talking with an old friend! One of them starting asking me about VOIP, since he had been considering that and had a note on his desk to give me a call at some point to talk about it. Wow! I always try to develop a relationship with customers, but I never realized the sheer strength of having done that!
Bottom line: I got that reference list to this new customer within an hour of him asking for it, and he called me later that day asking for the order paperwork. Yes, I got the sale from this new customer. Never under-estimate the power of developing a relationship with your customer and showing interest in understanding his business, what he does, what he wants to accomplish, and the problem he wants to resolve. There is nothing more that a business owner wants to talk about other than his business. You showing an interest in that business goes a tremendous way towards making a strong relationship.
By the way, I have sent a Christmas card to each and every one of OUR customers to wish them a happy holiday and to remind them that we are there for them. I got a phone call late last week from another existing customer, totally out of the blue, asking a couple questions about the possibility of upgrading his existing circuit. He said he missed my Christmas card this year since he got one from me last year. I told him that it should be arriving any day, since I only sent them mid-week last week. But he remembered because the card was unique, and also because I was approximately the last person on the planet that he ever expected a Christmas card from! There is incredible power and value in that.
Closing Thoughts
This has been a tremendously successful year for ShopForT1, for me as a senior closer, and hopefully for you as well with T1 sales as well as continuing success in your Cognigen business. But I can assure you that this is only the tip of the iceberg, since I have some insights into some of the things that 2006 will be bringing. Let me just say that I hope Santa brings you some duct tape, because you'll need it to hold your socks on as the new year unfolds.
I know Christmas is an extraordinarily busy time of the year -- running around, holiday parties, office parties, excess traffic, running down little old ladies to get prime parking spots at the mall, etc. I encourage you during this holiday season to take time to rest and recharge, smell the coffee, and smell the roses. Spend some quality time with family and friends, and take the time to learn new marketing techniques (hey, how about OFFLINE?), to further understand your business, and perhaps even reflect on ways that we can work better together for our mutual benefit.
My very best wishes to you and your family for a truly blessed and happy Christmas holiday, as well as a new year that will be successful enough to leave the success of this year in the dust!
God bless,
Jon Arnold

Below is from the January 2006 Cognigen Times........
====
ShopForT1 News & &Updates
The sales and success stories at ShopForT1 continue to grow on almost a daily basis. The ShopForT1 training call on Thursday December 8th discussed the implementation of the REMOTE hosting option for GeoQuote Plus sites, so if you missed that call, you may wish to go into your ShopForT1 back office and listen to the recorded call. This is a fabulous achievement as well as a tremendously technical marvel which will serve agents well.
ShopForT1 finally has a business VOIP vendor in the form of Nuvox. Since ShopForT1 is typically counted as a single agency, it should be a no-brainer to come up with that top-end spiff level and generate some healthy spiffs for yourself with your closer.
Business VOIP is a market that is truly taking off and has gained attention from almost every type of business and business owner. VOIP can provide an incredibly cost effective solution to a business. Be sure to keep this offering in your quiver of possibilities when you are marketing to potential customers.
Over the past couple of months, ShopForT1 now has Master Agent agreements setup with Nuvox, SBC, BellSouth, and PacBell. Although these are not yet showing up as part of the realtime quotes on the quote pages, we are able to get pricing for these carriers for the markets they service, write sales contracts, and the effort to fully integrate these carriers within the quote pages is well under way.
The ShopForT1 carriers are getting even more aggressive with providing incentives and pricing as they see ShopForT1 continue to produce record numbers of sales! Every carrier has their own set of "sweet spot cities", and ShopForT1 has multiple carriers offering full T1 lines in their sweet spots for as low as $400 per month, router included and $0 installation fees!
Whoa, did I hear you say "ouch" at that $400 price? Note that the ShopForT1 closers regularly talk with customers who are currently paying TWICE that amount or more for T1 service! Just imagine what your customer would do if they could save that kind of money for a service they already use?
The next ShopForT1 training call will be held on Thursday January 19 2006 at 9:00pm eastern (6:00pm pacific), 404-920-6611 pin 650265. On that call, ShopForT1 will be announcing some of the newest additions to the product offerings for 2006. There will be ... this ... and oh yes, that will be announced ... and of course they will announce the other thing ... Wow! These are exciting times for ShopForT1, and it just continues to get better and better.
We encourage you to get onboard with the ShopForT1 program -- become an active participant by taking the time to understand what this can mean for you and your commission check, and get started. Do it today!

March ShopForT1 News Update.......
ShopForT1 News & &Updates
The new year got off to a quick start with many Cognigen agents growing their income with sales through ShopforT1. In fact, ShopForT1 had their biggest month EVER, bringing in over $120,000 in NEW monthly contracts. This one month alone will add over $14,000 in monthly residuals to ShopforT1 agents just like you.
January 2006 also marked the first time that the total billing of all of our T1 customers totaled $1,000,000. It took just 2½ years to reach the 7-figure milestone and we plan to reach $2,000,000 by the end of this year. How do we plan to do that? By improving our program, our tools, our marketing collateral, and our agent support to the point where your job becomes as easy as: Read, Learn, and Do. We also plan to make changes to our entire program THIS MONTH that will allow you to make more money than ever before.
The February 2006 training call was held on Feb 23rd, and is available in your ShopForT1 back office to listen to if you missed it, and the great announcements made there. Go to:
Log in with your Cognigen agent ID and password, then click on the Training link, then go to the Audio Training link. Since the call format is .mp3, you can download the call to your IPOD so you can listen to it in your car on the way to work or you can listen to the streaming version right from your PC or laptop.
The announcement was that effective for any sales made through ShopForT1 after February 23, 2006, the commission for the lead agents will be DOUBLED. That is correct, doubled. Instead of the standard 85/15 split, it will now be 75/25, but since the commissions overall are increasing, the net effect is that commissions for the lead agents will double. Note that this is NOT retroactive, but is effective for all ShopForT1 sales closed after 02/23/2006.
As this issue of the Cognigen Times goes online, the ShopForT1 management, staff, and a large number of closers will be attending the Channel Partners trade show in Las Vegas, as reported in last month's issue of the Cognigen Times. There are sure to be some superb announcements for the April issue of the Cognigen Times that will be as a result of the meetings at this show.
If you have not yet gotten your feet wet with the ShopForT1 component of your Cognigen business, we would encourage you to do so. Go to your ShopForT1 back offline, read some of the training material, listen to some of the training calls and get started. Do it today!

ShopForT1 News & &Updates
Telarus/ShopforT1 management and several dozen of the ShopForT1 closers attended the 2006 Channel Partners Exhibition in Las Vegas in March. They garnered a lot of publicity and awards. The CPE is the telecom industry's premier annual convention.
The first award came from ACC Business (the business division of AT&T) - the 2005 Platinum Partner Award. The Platinum award is given to the top 1% of all ACC Business partners. This year, the awards were given out in order of sales volume, which means ShopForT1 was the #3 master agent in the nation - topping the likes of Microcorp, PlanetOne, and Intelysis to name a few.
The second award came from Xspedius Communications; Top Sales Agent of 2005. ShopForT1 is thrilled to be honored with these awards and recognition, but ultimately you and the rest of our agent team are the ones who deserve all of the credit - so THANK YOU for all you do to send our award-winning consultants T1 leads. As you can tell, our closers know what to do with your leads and how to turn a lead into a sale!
Meetings were held almost non-stop during this conference, as the ShopForT1-affiliated carriers were talking about new products, better pricing for us, and more spiffs and commissions. There was also talk with some additional carriers about forming alliances to jointly market products, since the ShopForT1 success story has definitely gained the attention of virtually the entire industry!
Late breaking news: ShopForT1 has a "Strategic Marketing Partner" or VAR program. This is where companies such as an IT consulting firm could join forces with ShopForT1. Many businesses, as a standard part of their job for their clients, need to get T1 lines (or larger circuits) for those clients. Instead of spinning their wheels trying to call a dozen or more carriers to get the best possible pricing, these companies can join ShopForT1 as a VAR. The major benefit here is that then the task of finding the best deal on business bandwidth falls within the expertise of the ShopForT1 closers, and allows the VAR to spend their time in provided their value-added services to their clients, as well as having the opportunity to share in the the residual commission from the circuit sale.
Now agents can refer a company to ShopForT1 where that company would be a good fit as a ShopForT1 VAR. The benefit of doing that is that the agent who refers the VAR to ShopForT1 will be receiving a 5% commission override from every closed sale that the VAR is responsible for bringing to the table! The links for referring that VAR to ShopForT1 should be in your ShopForT1 back office in the very near future.
If you have not yet gotten your feet wet with the ShopForT1 component of your Cognigen business, we would encourage you to do so. Go to your ShopForT1 back offline, read some of the training material, listen to some of the training calls and get started. Do it today!

ShopForT1 News & &Updates - May 2006
In addition to the tremendous volume of business that ShopForT1 is providing for the carriers they represent, ShopForT1 also has at least one more thing that is worthy of some bragging rights: the high dominance that the ShopForT1 sites have in almost all the search engines for the vast majority of keywords and key phrases that relate to T1. This is due, to a great extent, to the work of Patrick Oborn, the CIO (Chief Innovation Officer) of Telarus/ShopForT1. Patrick has what many would refer to as a PhD in search engine positioning knowledge, and has voluntarily spilled his guts in the various articles posted in your ShopForT1 back office, as well as on the monthly SFT1 training calls.
One cannot argue with something that works, and can be demonstrated to be working day after day. There is no other company in this industry who ranks as highly for as many key words and phrases as the ShopForT1 sites. Agents who have taken the time to read the material in the back office and taken action to deploy those techniques in their own web sites are realizing the rewards of this.
At the same time, it is very interesting to note that statistics and studies show that only about 20% of T1 leads come from the Internet. Wow, only one-fifth! Of that, only about 5% turn into a sale. Where do all the other sales come from? OFFLINE MARKETING! And for this reason, ShopForT1 recently added a whole stable of offline marketing materials in the back office, some of them freely downloadable for you to customize. The ones that are for sale are sold almost "at cost" to make them as affordable as possible to you. Remember, if only 20% of the T1 leads come from the Internet, that means that a whopping EIGHTY PERCENT (in other words, four times as many) come from some sort of "non-online" mechanism.
Why is this? Believe it or not, not all customers shop online. Large corporations very likely just keeping renewing the T1 contract they have had in place for years. Other companies simply don't know any better and call their local telephone company. Others that have "some telecom knowledge" will simply go directly to AT&T, MCI, Verizon, Sprint, etc, accept the price at face value and move forward with it.
One of the services you can provide to these folks is that with the methods described above, they are doing it all wrong and spending way more than they need to! The stories from the ShopForT1 closers are plentiful from the many customers they talk with on a regular basis, like the customer who just renewed their T1 line with [large carrier] when they could have used ShopForT1 and gotten a price for the same thing at less than half the cost!
So how do these people find out that an extremely viable alternative exists? By you making use of the offline marketing materials -- mailing them a flyer (US postal mail, not email which can be considered spam), joining your area's Chamber Of Commerce or "business lunch group" and giving a two minute presentation on what you can offer, etc. Many different methods are described in the back office materials, and this is limited only by your own imagination and innovation.
Why is ShopForT1 different than any other agent who might contact them? Because via the ShopForT1 technical consultants, we can offer an unbiased view of what is available to them from over 15 different first tier and top tier carriers, where each circuit price quoted is backed up by the ShopForT1 $500 Low Price Guarantee. How can ShopForT1 do this? It's called BULK. Based on the volume of business we provide to each of our carriers every month, they allow us to guarantee in writing that the price we quote from each carrier is the lowest price that the carrier will offer for a given location, circuit, and term.
Also note that ShopForT1 does not stop at T1 lines. ShopForT1 also offers business VOIP, data security, DS3 circuits, OC3 through OC192 circuits, frame relay, MPLS, point to point, VPN, collocation service, and much more. The ShopForT1 technical consultant will talk to the customer to help them define their needs and requirements -- a service, by the way, that is offered free, and for which the customer would likely pay several hundred dollars per hour to a network consultant to provide the same advice!
The business model of ShopForT1 is working. For a company to be billing more than a MILLION dollars in circuit sales before their 3 year anniversary is almost unheard of, yet that is where ShopForT1 is today and will continue to be in the future.
If you have not yet gotten your feet wet with the ShopForT1 component of your Cognigen business, we would encourage you to do so. Go to your ShopForT1 back offline, read some of the training material, listen to some of the training calls and get started. Do it today!

September 2006 Update.......
ShopForT1 News & &Updates
ShopForT1 continues to enjoy great success and the momentum continues. One of the focal points in recent months has been the development of and continued enhancements to the VAR program. This is a program whereby you the agent can bring a VAR or Strategic Marketing Partner to ShopForT1, and share in the revenue of any closed circuit sales that they bring to the table. In addition, the VAR gets tremendous visibility via the "VAR Lookup Tool" or "VARsearch", where a customer might visit the ShopForT1 site looking for a phone switch, a router, some IT consulting, etc. This has been discussed in detail in previous issues of the Cognigen Times, and continues to be a focal point.
Don't under-estimate the power of having introduced a VAR (or many VARs) to ShopForT1. They have been experiencing 5-10 unique leads per day for VAR services, and each of those that results in a sale of the VAR products or services can mean revenue in your pocket! The VARs have reported that they are extremely happy with the leads coming in, where these are leads and customers that they would not have had without ShopForT1.
Did you know that there are agent training calls for ShopForT1 every month? Yes, the schedule is posted in both your Cognigen back office as well as your ShopForT1 back office, usually held on the third Thursday of the month. If you missed any of these calls, you are encouraged to go into your ShopForT1 back office where you can listen to any of the ShopForT1 training calls, going back to day 1!
Telarus/ShopForT1 has recently added two new programmers as well as some additional staff to keep up with the increasing demand. Think about it -- for a company that is responsible for billing well over ONE MILLION DOLLARS in circuit revenue before they are only 3 years old, this is an incredible and unprecedented achievement, and the momentum continues to grow.
If you are not yet a part of the ShopForT1 bandwagon, you are encouraged to listen to the past training calls, as well as going into your ShopForT1 back office at:
http://agent.shopfort1.com
And login with your Cognigen ID and password, and go through the detailed information and training materials, which covers training, getting started, search engine positioning and optimization, offline marketing flyers and brochures, and much more. Do it today so that this can become a great additional revenue stream for you in the future!

Below is taken from the September 20 SFT1 News from Jon:
===========
As ShopForT1 celebrates it's third birthday since opening their doors, it is very encouraging for me to see how far we have all come. I have learned much and continue to learn every day to make me more effective. I can see many lead agents that used to submit about 90% garbage leads now getting 90% extremely valid and viable leads. That said, I am bummed to see many lead agents who have been around since almost day 1, and their leads are still coming in with literally as high as 50%+ garbage or residential. Since we all use the same Internet with the same major search engines, I cannot explain why the leads from some agents are "majority golden" and leads from other agents are "majority garbage".
If you fall in the former category ("majority golden"), I would encourage you to keep on with what you're doing, continue to tweak and advance your marketing to the next level. However, if you fall into the latter category ("majority garbage or residential"), I would encourage you --- STRONGLY encourage you --- to closely examine what you are doing, what you are saying on your web pages, how and where you are marketing, your methods and procedures, and make corrections as quickly as possible. While we all understand that it is virtually impossible, if you concentrate exclusively on Internet marketing, to achieve a 100% non-garbage level of leads, it IS possible and has been shown by many agents that those "non-leads" will not be a majority.
As I've explained in previous newsletters, the ShopForT1 closers are measured by several criteria, one of those being RPL or "Revenue Per Lead". When a closer's RPL level falls too low, that closer is shut off, which is obviously not something that any closer who takes this business seriously is willing to risk. It is for that reason that I was forced to shut off some agents that had me selected as their preferred closer, because they were just not getting it, and the majority (i.e., VAST majority) of leads coming in from them were pure nonsense. That was extremely difficult for me, because I want to believe that we are all trying. But when there is zero improvement over the course of YEARS, I have to assume that that agent is just too busy and/or too non-serious about this to make the necessary corrections.
So what happens to a lead agent that gets "shut off"? Their leads go into the general LPS (Lead Processing System) and assigned to random closers. But take that a step further -- closers are a tight-knit group and the word gets out. No closer in his right mind is going to accept leads from agents who submit "majority garbage" because that affects their closer RPL and they also lose significant productivity in handling those non-leads. Would you want to risk being shut off by every experienced closer within ShopForT1? There ARE some agents currently facing that situation ... although with the non-leads they are submitting, the only real thing being wasted is bandwidth and disk storage space...
And keep in mind that there is (or will be imminently) some new material in your SFT1 back office to further help with your OFFLINE marketing. See my previous newsletters about offline marketing, as well as the training material in your SFT1 back office about doing offline marketing. Also consider that the percentage of valid leads from offline marketing is approximately 16 TIMES GREATER than the quality of leads you get from simply doing Internet marketing. At that level of lead quality improvement, it would seem clear that offline marketing is a technique you would want to add to your marketing efforts.
Closing Thoughts
If you don't know how to take your business to the next level, then it is your responsibility to ASK and find out. Post your questions in the ShopForT1 BBS to get feedback and start a discussion on a particular topic. Participate in the training calls, like the one tomorrow night and ask your questions. ShopForT1 is great, but one capacity they don't have is telepathy, so if you don't ask, then it is not known that you have a question.

Below is from the Dec 2006 Cognigen Times.....
====================
As the end of the calendar year approaches, it is a good time for ShopForT1 and Telarus to reflect as to where they were just a bit over 3 years ago when ShopForT1 went LIVE in September 2003, compared with where they are today.
One of the most significant things that has occurred is that the majority of the top tier/first telecom carriers that ShopForT1 represents are today eating crow ... although they are happily eating crow. When the idea of what ShopForT1 was planning to do and how it would operate was pitched to the senior management of each of the carriers, the initial reaction was a barely-stifled yawn. Yet another couple guys with an idea for an agency that is going to set the world on fire, yawn. It was a tune they had heard before and had even danced to a couple of times. In fact, the vice president of ACC Business/AT&T very politely but tactfully said it was not going to work, it could not work. But he like the others decided to give it a shot.
And what a "shot" it was and still is! The senior management at the carriers are today very regularly eating braised crow, particularly when ShopForT1 management and closers are very visibly present in great numbers at telecom shows like the twice-annual Channel Partners Show. But they are doing so very happily because of the amount of new business that ShopForT1 provides to them every month. Most of the carriers run regular promotions to provide even more incentive, like one of the carriers who is providing xxx% bonus spiff depending on how many T1 lines are sold in the current month. (And by the way, as of the time of this writing, that "xxx%" is at 250% of the circuit sale price, with an excellent shot of hitting the 300% level!) Another carrier has a promotion offering a $2000 spiff for selling a DS3 circuit, and this is IN ADDITION TO the healthy residual commission on a circuit of that size.
Prior to their third birthday, ShopForT1 was responsible for over ONE MILLION DOLLARS per month in billing with the carriers they represent. Such growth continues and is unprecedented in the industry by any other agency, particularly agencies who simultaneously represent as many carriers as ShopForT1 does.
Just as a representative sampling, with over 375,000 price quotes generated since opening the doors, check out the following:
- ShopForT1 has attained "Platinum Agency status" with ACC Business/AT&T, meaning that ShopForT1 is one of their top 1% agencies.
- ShopForT1 is the Top Agent in 2006 for Broadwing.
- ShopForT1 was the Top Agent in 2005 for Xspedius.
- ShopForT1 is the highest performing agency in terms of number of circuits sold with Nuvox in the last half of 2006.
- ShopForT1 sold the most single T1's for Netifice in 2005.
- ShopForT1 sold the highest number of point-to-point T1's for Network Innovations in 2005.
- ShopForT1 is the "Most Valued Partner" with New Edge for 2004 through 2006 as one of their Top 20 agencies.
There have been many changes over this year in the telecom industry. Netifice was acquired by Megapath, allowing Megapath to offer bonded circuits and DS3 circuits over the Netifice backbone under the Megapath name. Earthlink acquired New Edge, although currently New Edge products and services are still being marketed under the New Edge name. Time Warner has acquired Xspedius, which will greatly expand the footprint where Xspedius services can be offered, based on the large Time Warner footprint. USLEC was acquired by Paetec, giving both carriers a joint footprint bigger than either of them had individually.
On a bittersweet note, ShopForT1 will no longer be associated with Verizon or offering their services after the first of the year. Verizon is a large telecom carrier, although it appears that after swallowing MCI earlier this year, they are still having severe digestive problems, complicated by Verizon's well-recognized and widely publicized reputation for poor customer service. Unfortunately, Verizon management was not able to see the tremendous value that ShopForT1 could bring to their table, nor were they willing to implement a structure to accommodate the demand, despite ShopForT1's highly visible and impressive track record with the other carriers they represent, increasing each carrier's business by an order of magnitude.
The success of the ShopForT1 VAR program continues unabated. See previous issues of the Cognigen Times as well as the information in your ShopForT1 back office for details on the VAR program, and how you can become a part of this exciting focus area. Take time to listen to the recorded training calls, also online in your back office, and participate in the monthly training call. The December call will be on Thursday December 14 at 9:00pm Eastern time. See your back office for call details and conference codes.
God Bless,
Michael
