I am getting on page one of Google in 1-2 days using articles, blogging, and social marketing. The key is choosing keywords that get searched 100-200 times according to this free keyword tool..

Then put the keyword in the title, and bold it one time in the intro and closing paragraphs. Include a resource box when submitting to article directories and hyperlink your keyword phrase back to your home page when posting it in a blog.

Hi bwait,
If you're talking about your own articles that you allow others to put on their sites, then YES, it is excellent for that. When they publish your article your link is on their site. The more sites that link to you, the better.
In terms of SEO, it will increase your link authority, which will increase your rank in the SE's. And make sure that you use good anchor text in your link. Anchor text helps to hyperlink words relevant to your landing page. Webmasters use anchor text to procure high results in the SE's.
To hep you out in this area you can use Google's Webmaster Tools. They facilitate this optimization by letting you view the most common words in anchor text linking to your site.

Of course, how much a backlink will help you depends on the PageRank of the site that posted your article.
You really have no control over who posts your article on what sites... but the better the quality of your content, the more website owners will pick up your articles.
It constantly amazes me how many truly awful articles there are out there... I think if you have a pretty good grasp of the English language, you're far ahead of 90% of other article marketers.
I've had articles on very competitive niches published on multiple websites for no other reason than because I can write well. The content isn't really any different than that contained in a hundred other articles... it's just written with proper grammar, spelling, and flow.
