Please add your comments to this thread on the ways someone can ruin their reputation while networking online.
In essence, what advice could you give to newbies so they can avoid making these mistakes as they build relationships and their credibility using online networks.
[Be nice in tone ... this should be instructional not combative or confrontational.]
God Bless,
Michael

Here's a few snippets hopefully everyone'll find useful....distilled down to the basics for simplicity sake. From the aspect of "don't" as originally requested:
* Don't focus on you and your needs...over the person(s)/network and their needs. Business is business...but successful business is relationships. Make a new friend...grow an old friend. Listen and give first, most, and often....humbley receive later. The long term benefits far outweigh any short term gains.
* Don't be all take..and no give. True networking is win-win. Truely successful networking is over deliver and under receive. The reputation you gain with this approach over time will multiply what comes back your way as your credibility and respect grows across the community.
* Don't be who you aren't....be helpful, be honest, be yourself, and have fun. Being who you are attracts those who best connect with "you" and leads to a more rewarding experience all around. Relax and enjoy the experience with "your own face" up front.
* Don't "ask" and not give back. If you are given referals, advice, business, informative replies to your posts, etc. .... give back more than you recieved. This solidifies individual and network relationship(s), enhances your credibility, and grows your reputation. Nothing kills a networking relationship more than someone who takes and gives back little or nothing.
* Don't ignore your strengths....share what you know, experienced, have access to, etc. Posting helpful information and resources for the community's benefit (NOT overt solicitations and "look at me") related to your area of expertise brands you as a trusted and credible resource for that subject...and will bring interested parties your way. If you don't share...no one will know what you can offer. Thus no accumulated credibilty.
* Don't fake it....stick to what you know. Jumping into a "discussion" or relationship alluding to yourself as knowledgable when you're not....will kill any chance for credibility. In fact it will have the opposite affect you'll likely never recover from.
* Don't overlook opportunities to help....you may not have the answer, resources, product/service but you may know who does. Pass that along to who needs it. Unselfishly refering others gets noticed....and you'll find yourself being "refered" the same way.
* Don't attack the messenger....debate the topic. Everyone will not agree on everything. It's best to agree to disagree...and seek mutual education and understanding in that vein. Attacking an individual benefits no one and hurts everyone involved.
* Don't impose your view....no one is/has the perfect "anything". Arrogance, ego, conceit, rigidity have no place in true dialogue and real networking. It's about the community....NOT YOU. Be open and encouraging to divergent views and opinions of others. Ackowledging and even appreciating those who differ from you actually promotes a more healthy networking community.
* Don't violate network policies....whatever the expected ettiquite of the group is conduct yourself accordingly. Spamming, flamming, trolling, etc. should never be in your business tool box. Credibility instantly goes poof for anyone and everyone who brazenly overlooks this common ethic.
God Bless,
Michael

Here's mine.
Don't refer every click exchange, traffic generator etc that you haven't tested and proven to work. If it doesn't work for you, then most likely it won't work for others.

Dekylo touched on this already, but I'd like to emphasize the importance of how you conduct yourself in discussion forums. To me, abusing the rules in those settings is the quickest and most damaging way to affect your online reputation. You'll often find that industry leaders consistently participate in discussions, and they will never want to work with you if you're rude or focused solely on self-promotion.
Forums are not the place to push your product, training program or affiliate program. We're here to help each other and learn from shared mistakes, not make a quick buck.
That's the beauty of moderated forums...every topic is reviewed. Don't ruin your future reputation with the hope you'll make $10 from forum visibility.

Man, looks like pretty much all areas were covered in Michael's Jan. 5th post!
The only other thing I can think of is being oblivious to or uneducated on the current laws regarding business opportunities, mlm, advertising, etc.
For example, there are too many people promoting illegal opportunities (pyramids, ponzis, etc.) who have no clue whatsoever that they're illegal, or even why they're illegal. Breaking laws is certainly a good way to ruin your networking reputation!

| Good advice. Always try to keep the negativity out of the forums. Always try to be positive. We are all in business for ourselves and we need the positive re-inforcement.

Would like to second All the ruling mentioned earlier :
1. Seriously folks, don't ever say something utterly brainless and sounds more like a joke when people ask serious questions. Keep to the topic and make constructive remarks. Not demean others.
2. If you want to spam. Please go somewhere else. Like the toilet bowl...
Its only by grace that this forum is still going on without much indecent posts. All thanks to the great moderators.
Regards,
Vern

Think of it this way... Would you ever choose to work with someone who put you down or said something offensive about your job? Probably not right? I know I wouldn't...that person would always be like a stain on my memory!
The challanage is for you to treat each forum member and each of their businesses with respect and offer CONSTRUCTIVE critisism rather than negativity. Everyone is at a different level here and we need to do our best to grow each and every day. This is only done with positive attitude and a belief in yourself and your company.

I'm guilty of this: Don't give advice to someone who wasn't asking for it.
What I mean by that is, notice your intent in giving advice. Are you generally trying to help the person, or are you just using their difficulty as a venue to show how smart you are, or to win people over to your way of thinking?
Not only does this tendency waste your time (people don't take advice unless they're looking for it), but it can also make you come across as sort of a know-it-all.
Realize when someone is looking for a solution to their problem and when they're just expressing their thoughts and emotions.

Hi Everyone,
I posted this in another topic, but I will repeat it here because I believe it is relevant.
Do not advertise using hype: honest, hard working people are weary of this and you will lose crediblity with the type of person you want to attract.
On the contrary, you will attract people who want to become wealthy by not lifting a finger and not investing a dime.

This is an excellent thread
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of providing honest contant with real value.
For example, on another forum I posted a simple questions and the next three replies were all ads. do you think I ore anyone else would want to network with and build relationships if some one emails them an ad?
You really can build relationships that will last and bring years of value, simply by offering to help people without asking for or expceting anything in return.
The more oftm you do this, people will begin to see you as a person of integrity and will trust you.
For example, on another forum a woman asked a question about Traffic Swarm. I replied with several suggestions. We were then able to contact each other offline and I walked her through how to get better results with Traffic Swarm and some other resources.
I did not aske her to or expect her to look at any of my affiliate programs or business. We continue to stay in touch.
Help at least one person a day and watch your relationships build and grow.

Tons of great advice in this thread. Thank you
Another point that I've noticed over the past 3 years of networking online where people can damage their credibility: Constantly changing home biz or biz opps i.e. grass is greener next door syndrome. When folks have sig lines that change monthly- with no mention of the previous biz opp, other folks start to wonder how dedicated you are. Does that make any sense? Early for me, not enough coffee yet, head ache...
Thanks again!

| Hello all, I just wanted to expand on the point that sfrewerd made about "Opportunity Hopping" It's easy to become frustrated when one is not making the money that was expected and go to another program, and there are enough to make your head spin. My suggestion to anyone who is new in this industry is to research, research, and then research and know that this is the company and/or product that you fully believe in. Then of course stick with it. Keeping your integrity intact all the while.

Too right Michael!
Don't hijack a thread in a different direction than intended. Stick to what the thread originator asked/shared. If they ask about A.... don't talk about B.
I was quite active on another forum until recently when I realised that I was spending half my day trawling through the dribble that people write.
I don't mean to sound like a kiljoy and I'm up for friendly banter, but STICK TO THE TOPIC please.
Honestly I'm talking drivel, irrelevant nonsense. I frequent forums with a plan in mind, to help others and to learn and pick the brains of those more experienced than me.
Not to hunt through 30 posts on a topic I'm interested in to find that there was only one post that's relevant.
Does anyone else get this? Or am I just moaning
Nick

The #1 way to botch your credibility in my opinion is to SPAM the message board and spam the pm. When I see someone doing this, also know as hijacking, I immediately think they're a newbie or just plain desperate. How could they possibly think this works? Also, sending me a pm, clearly out the blue with no warning whatsoever, is the quickest way to get yourself blocked from future pm's.
In reference to opportunity hopping...
In some cases, I think it's necessary. I've done it and so has a lot of people, especially when they are new to network marketing. Moving around was how I learned what I did not want in a biz and what I did want in a biz. Each individual is unique and what works for one may not work for someone else.
When you find a biz op that meets your standards, and your marketing style, I would suggest you stick with it for life, possibly adding one other additional steam of income but be careful not to spread yourself too thin with a bunch of biz ops.

I agree, it is annoying to find a topic you think is what you are looking for only to realize after reading all the reply's only a few were on what you were looking for.
Stay on topic and be helpful but not annoyingly so.
Just because you might feel something is the way you say it is doesn't mean that everyone will agree. Try not to get too pushy. (I know that when emotions get involved sometimes you can't help it- I've been there - In cases like that, type your response in notepad and comment later when you have cooled down)
Otherwise you could wind up looking like a total &*%

I think one of the quickest ways to ruin your credibility when networking online is to send a spam email in big all caps or with distracting images and video.
What do you folks do when you get an email like this? do you automatically delete it or reply that it was distracting and annoying?

You should delete ANY spam email you recieve. If you respond you just told the sender your email is valid and you'll just recieve more. Particularly since most spam is sent by spambots now.
