Unwanted email could actually be used to your advantage. If you set up your email acct with a "vacation message" that's includes an ad to your biz, the spammer will immediately get a message from you thanking him for his offer and stating that that you will look at it when you return.
In most cases they will open the email because they think you're interested in their offer and then they'll see your ad. It's probably best to set up a seperate email account to use specifically for spammers and wait for the flood. We've received lots of click thrus this way.

Interesting point Adrianne and well taken.
However, the huge majority of spam today is not sent by "real" people. It's sent by spambots....from fake email addys/ and "names". Automated "mass emailers" with no ability to see return emails. They only want to deliver their message. Nothing else. They can't see what you may send back except for email addy...which they use to verify they have a good address to keep spamming. You're message will never be read.

In most cases, this is true. My junk folder can attest to this fact, but there's a small percentage of emails that actually do go thru, otherwise they would not be able to click the links in my ad.
Your reply raised another question: If they want to verify that my email is valid, how is that going to benefit them? Do you think they're harvesting emails to try to sell them, maybe? If they're marketing thru email, and using a spambot to verify a good email addy, I will never be able to respond to their offer, which means they're not going to make a sale. What's the purpose of that?

Verifying your email addy is valid tells them they can keep sending you spam.
As for not being able to reply to their offer...yes you can. They put a link for that in their email...e.g. to a website. They don't need you to reply to their email with another email....just click on the link in their original spam email. That's how they operate.

Oh, I see. I generally click the spam button so fast that I never reach the point of seeing the link inside the email. Do you think this is actually effective? In a way, I believe that it is because why else would they be doing it, but I am a little curious about their ROI?
If I didn't think I'd be in jeopardy of loosing my biz, I would give it a try just to test this theory.

I use http://www.spamarrest.com and it filters out about 95% of spam. As an internet marketer, though, I want to be reachable so I do quickly sacn my spam filters and on a case by case basis, may send a real quicl email inviting the person to contact me if they would like to learn how to market online correctly.
If you are actively and consistently marketing and prospecting correctly, you will reach a point where you are so busy replying to and helping people who call or email you asking for help that spam emails become less f an issue. Delete and move on

In my mind you ruin your reputation when networking online if you..
- spam, of course
- be a pain in the neck
- write inconsistent articles in online article directories
- only criticize others without being willing to learn yourself
Find something - be it product or service - that is really helping people.

criticizing other members hard will be the
way.
Even if you don't agree with their comments,
voice out your opinions in a nice way and
state what you think is better instead.
Opinions are always opinions, do not take
them too personal too...
Offer great value and advice at times,
don't always look to gain something before
taking. As they say - The more you give, the
more you take.... And that is true....

- SaM Yeah, this is all too true. You see it all the time on other forums, where someone disagrees with another person and they have to insult/attack the other person instead of just stating their disagreement. It's like the anonymity and distance of the internet has a way of bringing out people's worst side sometimes (except here  ). The irony is, if the attacker's intent was to change the other person's opinion, they probably just failed, since now their "target" is only going to respond by getting defensive and not even listening to what the attacker has to say. There's a reason why they say "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar". By keeping your criticisms constructive, you not only give out a more positive vibe, you also have a better chance of actually effecting change in the other person.

How To Properly Advertise On Forums Without Getting Banned
It never ceases to amaze me how many people still don't get how to properly do business on the Internet.
Spam in online forums and networks like HomeBasedBusinessForums.com abounds. It gets sickening to visit sites that are nothing but other people's marketing messages. It just turns forums like this one into nothing but interactive classified ads instead of archives full of truly useful information.
I'm all for advertising because it pays to get the word out about a really good product or service that you use yourself. And being paid to get the word out, just sweetens the pot.
Online forums that contain highly targetted traffic are very tempting for someone to just butt in and make a post about a relevant product or service.
There's just two things wrong with doing it that way. It probably won't work and you'll very likely get yourself banned if the discussion is moderated.
The reason it won't work is your ad is acting as a referral. A referral is usually wasted unless there is some trust built up with the reader of your message first. Pure hard sell advertising messages are not as effective as a referral from a helpful message poster.
The correct way to advertise in discussion forums requires a little more work, but is safe from banning and will garner A LOT more traffic and sales for you.
Here's how I do it:
1. Make yourself a good signature for all your messages. Just about all message forums have a user control panel that allows you to add a signature message to all your message posts. Make up a good one such as:

Then anytime you post, your signature will be added to your message. Resist the urge to make this too salesy. The appeal should be subtle but obvious what they will be getting. Notice that the signature references a URL. This is your landing page where you can do all the selling you like. Avoid direct affiliate URLs because it's frowned upon by most forum moderators.
2. Before posting, scan the other messages and questions that are being asked by other members. If you can add a useful comment, suggestion or pose a question just reply and include your signature.
3. If the message is a very relevant and popular message , subscribe to the message so that you will be notified when the message is updated by fellow members. Then reply to the message again. This will push the message up and keep your link in front of more people and for a longer time. I've seen popular discussions get thousands of page views. Remeber to add something to the discussion though....make a beneficial contribution. Anything that doesn't advance the discussion is NOT kosher.
That's all there is to it . Simple, effective and I've never been banned for doing things this way.
Quit trying to make the fast sale. Everyone is suspicious of people trying to just make a quick buck. Try a little useful participation and use a soft sell approach. It works for me and it will work for you.

I would add that doing anything that is annoying to people will ruin your credibility very quickly. I am talking about pop-up adds, pop-under adds, anything that slows down the prospects computer, anything that changes the homepage of the prospect, or spamming. I have never understood why businesses online think they can earn the interest of customers by doing any of the above. I will also add that doing anything that makes you look like an amateur, even though it's not annoying, but if people see you doing anything that obviously doesn't work affectively, that can ruin your creditibility as well.

Hello to all!
Wanted to add my two cents...
The only time I will ever contact anyone, whether by phone or email, is if they have opted-in to any of my sites or requested further info by email or phone.
As far as I am concerned, if someone calls or emails me "out of the blue", they have completely blown their credibility with me.
I don't get mad, as some people cold call..no big deal. But when I am overwhelmed with garbage in the mail, in the email and on the phone, then we have an issue.

Awesome thread.... I'm new here but have been on forums nearly my entire life. The largest complaint that I've dealt with and heard over the years is the "Know-it-alls" that go into a forum to try to show how amazing they are or how much they know and even if not directly, they put others intellect down.
I say just go in, make some friends, and be yourself :-)

I couldn't keep myself from posting when I saw the thread-topic "spamming"!
Since, I always wonder whenever a spammy email smiles in my inbox telling me "Look I've entered without knocking"  it just takes me to frown over the hill n i just ponder for a minute or two when n why I had visited "this person's" wapsite n how he gotta know my email ID even when i had never registered to wapsites like this throughout my virtual life!!! Then I push the Spam button on the top hoping this "push" will eliminate this email for the rest of time, but in most cases it's never like that! Spamming is easy to do, hard to bear and hardest to stop! Ain't that?

I would most definitely agree with you there. Spamming is one of the chief complaints of, I believe, probably everyone on the net except for those doing the spamming. I think the only way to get a spammer to stop is to either let their company know that this is happening or if you can figure out how to, to let their ISP know about it and with enough complaints they could possibly be shut down. My luck shows that at least for me hitting the spam button seldom works as well as unsubscribe links which also seldom work for me.
But on the other side, once you opt-in to someone's list then until you unsubscribe you are pretty much going to get anything and everything they want you to get. Still nice when you find the lists where they only send you something once every couple of days or longer though :-)
