I've seen this post here and elsewhere for a couple of months now and I hadn't really stopped to read it top to bottom, Michael, and I apologize for assuming I knew what it was about.
Actually, I did know what it was about but didn't anticipate the richness of the content. If only it were the "fool-proof fix-all" but there will still be many intent on "all fixin' to offer proof they're fools".
Just wanted to throw my sig line...um er-ahhhh two cents in on the subject.
Seriously, though, you tend a lot of info-gardens up here in cyberspace and I appreciate your efforts. It's a privilege to have you as a friend.

From Gery to Michael: "Seriously, though, you tend a lot of info-gardens up here in cyberspace and I appreciate your efforts. It's a privilege to have you as a friend."
Gery,
And I believe we all appreciate yours as well!
If there's one person I see on different marketing forums here and there who's always offering good advice, good conversation, and damn funny commentary, it's you!
You're a gem, too, my friend. Keep on shining!

Just an ironic thought.
How come many of us have up to three bizop links in our signature
Remember nobody is interested in our business anyway.
As nobody is interested in what Home Based Business we have, do we really need to have links in our signature at all, or... ?
It is good though for Link popularity.

Speaking of web stuff, Aaron, I threw out a question or two in the Squidoo thread on a my first couple of lenses the other day. If you have any points or opinions to tack on I'd appreciate it.

Are you guys getting spammed from other forum users?
I'm getting these private messages which are either blatant advertisements or fake expressions of interest in my postings. When I e-mail these people back, they don't respond - The e-mails seem designed to get me to look at their site.
I've had one genuine private message from James Leong (thank you James) and several spams.
Wake up spammers! You're wasting your time. Who in their right mind is going to jump ship after being tricked into going to your tacky, hyped up websites?

Yes, I got one via private message on May 12th from a certain someone as well! Here's the PM messge with contact info. removed:
"I'd like to talk to you about your message board posting on MLM Forums. Please send me an email to..."
My response:
"Hi _____.
Actually, I no longer give out my email address until I've established a good rapport with a person. Otherwise, it generally just leads to a bunch of spam!
But I'd be more than happy to talk about things via private message. Just PM me again with any of your questions or comments."
Of course he never wrote back after that. Michael, I'm sending it to you now via PM.

Exactly. My favorite question to these folks is, "Why would I want to join ranks with someone who can't follow rules and jeapordizes their ability to do business online by doing so."
I did receive one response which was a highly intelligent - "Well then click delete if you don't like it. I have rights to free speech you know!"
I don't know how I resisted signing up with them ...BUT I DID!

Hey Gery,
You have a great sense of humor and an iron will.
Imagine resisting all those tempting offers to get off the stairs of work & committment and take the gold plated elevator to success.

funny post, I agree, but also think, people are still looking for that 1 golden opportunity.
spamming is wrong, but building real relationships is right, to all the people who post quick posts and spam, will have the same kind of business success, quick and short and not well received.

| Although "shameless" promotion may not be the best way to advertise, don't forget that some people try a business and are not happy with it and still have the "MLM Bug". So for the most part, I think you're right. Shameless promotions are not a good investment in one's time. But there might be some redeeming value if someone is ready to change companies. Timing is everything here and if you're in the right place at the right time, then you might find someone who is looking for a new business. Here's a good example of why I don't think we should rule out other network marketers as potential downline members: I used to have an upline from a former business who was such a master at finding people's phone numbers on their sites and calling them up. I would assume the "Do Not Call List" law wouldn't apply if they have their phone number shamelessly on their business website. Anyway, she would call someone and introduce herself. Then she mentioned how she was at their site. Also, she would ask if they're still working it actively. She really had such a way about her. Not everyone is gifted like that to cold call. But she was and still is a master at it. She added many experienced network marketers to her downline from this technique. She had a lot of success in her company to back up herself. Success makes a difference so don't try this unless you're brave and have something to nicely and humbly toot your horn about when cold calling.

In answer to jonsvein's question, since the forum allows the sig file, why not use it? As countrychick says, maybe there are people that are unhappy with what they are currently doing or perhaps what you offer can compliment what I offer. But you would never know unless your sig file had links to your site.
As for the link popularity, yes... links in the sig file do count and can generate some nice high quality back links depending upon the PR and status of the forum you post to.

| Ok, I am not new to MLM, but I must be missing something. Ok so let's say no one plugs their business and does not advertise, but people still leave their URL in their signature area...I think it's called a "signature file"... Isn't that sort of a way to advertise in and of itself? Michael, if you think it's not helpful to advertise and a waste of time, so why not just write your name in the signature area and not leave your busness link? I'm not trying to be a stinker, I'm just confused about why these people who leave an advertisement are so vilified when everyone leaves their URL for their business in their signature area. Ok, it's wrong when they do that and they are not following directions. But why make them out to be such villians, you know?

countrychick,
I think there is a big difference between a thoughtful, intelligent, and helpful post with a link in a sig file on the one hand and a hyped up sales letter for the latest flash-in-a-pan, get-rich-quick scheme on the other.
I like seeing which companies people are with. I also learn how to write better headlines and similar copy because some of the folks on forums are darn good a grabbing my attention with their one-sentence sig files!
