One of the toughest things for new prospects is to approach people in the cold market. I'd be interested to see how you get your downline to step up and speak to people they meet around and about in the real world.

Now, I'm not asking for plugs of leads companies. We all probably use them. Also, I'm not asking for any links to your new improved web training ebook.

If I was your new recruit... how would you train me to go out and meet people for your business out in the cold tough real world?

Hi there... stumbled across this site - I am UK based... sole income is from my MLM business.

We call non warm market stuff "Rods in the pond" marketing. The more fishing rods (activity) you have in the pond the more fish you will catch and even maybe a big one. Activity... flyers, prospect cards, shop adverts, badges, car sign, front door sign, posters, hand to hand leafleting, 3 foot rule, labels, mail shots, email shots, market research, pay per click - Google,, In confidence letters, Trade stands, market stands, car sun screen, T Shirt advert, Newspaper adverts.... the list goes on. Pure numbers game. We target 30 - 40 leads per week to recruit 1 new distributor. Info pack out and then follow up. This is outside of warm market etc.

Hope that is of interest - it works ... Sales $2.1 Million last year.

Short answer:  I wouldn't!  :)

I think most of the challenges that new distributors face stem from the fact that they're taught to spend their time with people who haven't expressed any interest in a home business.  Then they don't understand why -- after 30 days -- they're not making any money.

If I'm in an airport, at a resort, at a restaurant, or a hotel and someone is prompted to ASK what I do for a living, I don't mind telling them.  If they express an interest in knowing more, I'll give them a business card and tell them to call me when I'm back in the office.  I never solicit people and I never teach my associates to.

That way we spend our time with people who have ASKED for information....not trying to FIND prospects.

We do that as well - in fact we just show people how to cummunicate in lots of different ways and that is the key to our success.

Just learn how to ask questions, listen and be able to give a response that may lead to an interested prospect.

If you are in the people business you need to be a student of people.

Well, being new to MLM and not very comfortable around people I don't know this has been a real challenge for me. What I did was put a bunch of my business cards at a few different establishments like beauty shops, Nail salons, at my Chiropractors office and Dr's office. Also when people ask me what I do for a living I just tell them " I teach People how to become senders of cards. That usually gets some kind of conversation going. If they seem real interested I give them a business card. If they don't seem interested we just talk about something else like them. Every body likes to talk about themselves.

If anyone can give me more ideas I am open.

Hello there,

I'm surprised...well maybe not... when I talk to successful mlm'ers they often say... I don't approach anyone. I wait for them to ask me... etc. (They seem to forget where they came from or are lying about their level of success.) The one's wishing for your opportunity don't know where to look.

Unless you approach and share it with them, the will be where they are forever.

Seriously. I think the real joke is all the fakers and takers out there saying sit back and let them come to you. That is so playing to the slackers. You know they are sitting on the couch and that plays to them. (Don't do anything... follow my slacker system and you'll be a magnet to financial freedom)

I know, on the other hand, that that doesn't work.

Residing outside the comfort zone is the only place profits are found. Stop spending outside your companies tools and training and start rolling up your sleeves and making it happen.

PERIOD

BigMoney, I think you missed my point.  There are dozens of ways to spend your time with people who ASK for the information without having to spend your time soliciting people.

This is basic Marketing 101:  95% of success comes from spending your time with the right people.

If you're marketing farm equipment who do you want to talk to?  Farmers.
If you're marketing golf equipment, who do you want to talk to?  Golfers.

And if you're marketing an opportunity to earn money from home, it only makes sense to spend your time with people who have expressed an interest in earning money from home.

BigMoneyMachine wrote:

Yeah.  We're laughing alright.  All the way to the bank.  ;)

Seriously, it's not that complicated.  It's just a preference of where to spend your time.  If you want to spend your time on the "three foot rule" and striking up conversations with strangers, there's nothing at all wrong with that.  It's "bootstrap" marketing at its finest.

But, if I have a choice of talking to 10 people at Walmart or 10 people who have requested information on a home business....well, I won't be spending my time in the frozen food section.

BigMoneyMachine wrote:

Of course it works.  As I said, it's a fundamental principle of marketing:  spend your time with people who want what you've got.

Then again, ANYTHING will "work".  It's just a matter of how efficiently you want to use your time.  Technically, you can spend your time standing on street corners saying "Do you want to join an MLM" and, sooner or later, someone will say 'yes'.  But that doesn't mean it's the best way for someone to work.

BigMoney, obviously what you're doing is working for you.  It's not anyone's place to tell you that what you're doing is wrong.  But, kindly show others the same courtesy.  I know too many people using our methods and techniques who earn multiple six-figure and 7-figure incomes.  It's not arguable that it works.

Deb, thanks for taking that sig line in the spirit in which it was intended.  I was really just being light-hearted.

The truth is that anything someone does to promote their business will work.  Personally, I prefer to spend my time efficiently by only talking to people who're asking me for information.  I find that more enjoyable than soliciting people or asking others to come look at what I'm doing.

But, I'm being redundant.  BigMoneyMachine wants to talk about approaching strangers and persuading them to look at his home business.  That's evidently working for him and I'm sure there are others who would like to talk about the best way to do that.  It's just not what I do or teach.

Yeah I don't think its about NOT talking to people or approaching people..   I don't think I hear Tony say that at all.   If it were. Tony would not be calling his leads.

In fact I think the point being made here is..  Why talk to people who have no interest in talking to you.   Or why talk to people who have not indicated an interest in what you have or in a home based business at all.

Its about talking to those in a targeted market only.   If someone responds to an Ad for a home based business, then you should talk to them.   If they do not, they why should you.   We only have 24 hours in a day, why not make the best of it...

It just sounded FUNNY thats all.

I have approached people many times and
Big Money Machine goes door to door selling
the air purifiers(which I really believe in)
as you read by my post on mlm.com!
I should be selling them myself! lol

Big Money Machine DOES get very big commissions
by cold selling,it works for him and I was not
making fun of HIM or his methods. NO!

Deb, thanks for sharing that.  I didn't know what BigMoneyMachine did.  Sounds like a good business.

And that explains a bit about why "attraction marketing" is a little different for him.  The air purifier business is -- I would think -- more effectively promoted by actually getting a unit into someone's home or office so they can experience it.

Since this typically necessitates that you limit your marketing to a certain geographical area (one you can travel to), then you're automatically dealing with a smaller pool of people who would go searching for that on their own.  I dealt with the same issue when I was doing consulting and sales training for ADT Home Security.  You just have to be able to walk into their house to effectively market.

It's apples and oranges compared to what I'm doing today.

Tony

Yes MM... it's true.... I can make huge profits on the air purification systems that I sell by Ecoquest. There is no question about it. I do this in the evening and throughout the day I sell Prepaid Legal. Most people tell me that I am breaking the rabbit rule which is...

*Chasing two rabbits never gets anyone success in catching a rabbit (getting successful) , you should stick to one and you might just catch one rabbit...

With time management I am able to market and build downlines in both companies and make a great living in both.

How? I build a downline using leads long distance in one, while doing the "dreaded" 3 foot rule locally for my other team.

I didn't mean to insult Tony at all. I would love to find a way meet local mlm'ers without so much foot work, but thus far haven't had a whole lot of luck at it. I'll be watching these boards to see how you folks do it.

I have tried a lot of what I've read about from these and other boards, but keep finding that that the basics (WORK FOR ME) in building a local organization.

I do leads in the morning for one company... go out and three feet them locally for the other...

I do my afternoon leads for the one company... them three feet 'em for the other...

In the evening... (repeat)...

On the weekends I also try and get as many purification machines in people's homes as I can... and they don't wanna give 'em back.

Just sharing what I'm doing and I just keep winning car bonuses and vacations and lots of retail as well as override profits. :D

Hi Big Money Machine.

What you are doing is just fine.
PPL has no conflict at all with selling the
air purifiers.
Its two entirely different businesses.

You are obviously someone who is not afraid

Hi MM,

You are absolutely correct. I find I can meet people all day long if I have the time. and its a lot of fun, to learn about people.

Here are some typical examples of a day like this for me.

I was out the other day with my Dad, for a few hours having lunch, and just hanging out, Dad is like me likes to meet people and talk. I guess that is where I get it from.

Dad was visiting me from out of town, he is 95 years old and amazing, is so positive, he is planning his dinner he will cook in four years time when he turns 100, for 8 people, he can do that now very well, in fact a great cook. Imagine having that vision and desire. He would like to redecorate his whole appartment, who thinks of that at 95. :-)) anyway here is how our afternoon went...

In just three hours, We met the Mayor of our city, briefly, plus a retired magistrate, that Dad ended up talking with for about 30 min, had a great time both of them, common interest, Dad was an RCMP.

Then we met a fellow standing behind us while waiting for  the ferry and learned about him, he connected with Dad, was interested in his age. David is his name who has recently had Cancer had a keen interest in longevity, Dad is certainly that. Dad has his information and I will get it and send him something - a thank you card from my business for taking care of my Dad who doesn't see well.

Then we met a couple sitting near us while having lunch, and chatted with them, that was a good conversation, learned all about them and what they did etc.  And while I was waving my Dad off, another lady standing beside me started chatting, learned all about her. We connected well.  I find often people will tell you all about them you can learn a ton in just five or ten minutes. I sometimes leave with disbelief how much I now know about that person. For some reason they love to tell me all about themselves, their family, their jobs, its amazing.

3 out of the five asked what I do, Know Why? Because I asked them what they do, because I was interested.  You can get real good at talking with strangers and its amazing what you learn and I find if they have the time, they love talking with me.

Casual conversation opens the door, everytime. Not all are right for your business but it's all numbers folks. My business is so easy, I just send them a card.

Another example I was having coffee in the mall at my favourite stop, and the guy sitting beside me, I have wondered what he did for a while, so I simply asked a question about the vacant shop near by and said who used to be in there. That started the conversation, and I asked what he did, guess where we went beyond that? About 15 min conversation. I will see  him again, now I know his name.

Same thing happened the day before, just a simple question got the same conversation going, with a fellow by the name of Mark, handing me his card, he is a stock promoter, and semi retired. His wife, he said would be interested in what I had due to her interest in natural health my other product. So I will gift her something.

I could do that ten times a day, but you gotta love talking with people, with no purpose in mind, that will come by itself. People will tell you all about themselves, and you will realize if they are right for your business naturally. Show interest in their lives and them. Funny thing is if they are happy and have success they will generally tell you.

That is what I find, and this has been my success, and I have got real good at it,  and it's fun. It can be a very busy social day if you want. Take just one day and hang out at the mall or somewhere and just chat, try it just for fun. You can get good at it.

You can make a lot of contacts, and actually you will make friends. Be happy and friendly and genuinely interested in people.

I found the biggest networkers in my business by cold calling on the net, took me from 2000 members to 83,000 in four years.

Go for it folks, millions of people love to talk with you.:)

Wow... That hit the nail on the head.

Just go out be nice to people. It has become second nature for me. When I first got into Network Marketing, I used to jump out in front of people and rattle off..."man  you gotta see this... its the best thing ever... oh my god... you're gonna be so excited!!!..."

And people would take my tool just to get me to go away and slam dunk it in the nearest trash can, even if it was five feet away from us.

I was rude (not meaning to be) and so they didn't mind returning that favor.

Now, I have found just being friendly with the girl at the grocery store, or the guy at the playground, or the salesman that knocks on my door, or sparking a 5 minute conversation with the telemarketer, really works.

You also make an excellent point. Ask them what they do. They will go on about it. People love to talk about themselves. When they're done, they'll ask you the same question. That is when you get the green light to tell them what you do.

Having a sincere interest in the person is the key. It can't be faked. But don't be afraid to fake it 'till you make it. It'll come in time.

Get out there and get to know everyone. Smile and have some fun. :D
