I have a 30 page new member training that Jim Rohn and Torou Ikeda used to do in a weekend training.

I got permission to use it and have for quite a while.  It has nothing but vision and goal setting.  Then I do a consult and create a plan for them.

Online is simple and you simply give them the tools but just like offline I teach that people go out and find others like them.  Julianne here is in my downline and she now comes up number two or three of search engines for "scuda diving forum" and she is signing up scuba divers.

Same offline, my friend that rides harleys with me recruited 60 harly riders in the first couple months.

The key is to help peoplp go out annd find poeple just like themselves.  Then its easy and they love talking to them.

Find somethiing you like to do and go do a lot of it!  If they dont know their compelling why they wont make it (even if its only a car payment in teh begiinning) so I do that first and do not move on it until its firmly in place

Tony, I wanted to reply to what you said about prospecting in public.

I teach people to be curious.  When you meet someone ask questions about what they do until they are blue in the face.  People love talking about themselves.

After some period of time they will ask you what you do and you can answer.  If you are in a place with people like you then you already know you have that in common.

For instance the girl that I talked to a few months ago is a hair stylist, 19 years old, and tattooed from head to toe.  She went to a one day work shop here in SF for people thinking of having a tattoo business.  It was like $50.  I had done this before with a girl in Seattle.  You see I send people out to have fun.  If I do my job right they will have found something they love to do and will look forward to dioing it!  Now she’s in a room full of people that obviously want to make money and love tattoos.

If anyone asked her what she did, she was to say the truth.  "I have a product that people like me would be interested in so I came here to learn more about your business because I think Tattoo Artsts woudl do really well with it." She was only to say that if asked and she had no instructions other than that answer.  This took the pressure off of her thinking she was supposed to have some number of people or some craziness like that.

Her job was to find out as much as possible about three people. That’s it.  Do not attempt to sell anything.  Just go and report back with every thing there is to know about 3 people that were there.  Even the names of their pets.

She had a great time...... and who do you think she signed up?

I had another guy in my downline that was a Raw Foodist.  All he did was go around to every raw food class he could find.  At lunch he would just take out our product and take a big swig! People woudl say. "whats that?"

How could anyone call this working!

The question is not can you build a downline.  The question is WHAT kind of downline do you want!

I have a downline of compassionate, great people that want to make a difference in the world (and a lot of beautiful woman,LOL).

If someone is not dying to share Network Marketing with everyone they meet then they don’t understand the incredible tool we have and the power it has to change lives.

I was in Boulder, CO, with some friends and top leaders about a year ago.  I went to dinner with 4 other people.  My friend Charlie Foy makes 30k a month and he was handing out CD’s all the way down the street, LOL.

As we sat on a patio eating we were recognized by some distributors in our company that just happened to be walking by.  They were surprised because we were the 5 people that had achieved the top position in the company and we lived all over the country.

This distributor and his wife began to tell how they had a table at a rodeo event near by.  He said it started to rain and the whole thing was a bust.

I asked what would have made it “not a bust”.  He didn’t get it at first, but then I said again. How many interested people – really interested- would you have had to meet in order to have considered it a good day.    He said two.

So I decided to get him his two really interested people.  After all, he just walked up to a table of the 5 top money earners in his company.  I got up with my friend Charlie and we walked out into the square. If you know downtown Boulder it’s like a big open area.  I looked around for people just like me, of course!

I saw a table with two girls handing out leaflets on being vegetarian. I walked over and started asking them everything I could about what they did and why they were passionate about helping animals.  They told me how they come out every day and put in as much time as possible (passion) and that they get all the brochures and tables from a local non-profit they volunteer for (network of like minded people)

At the very end when they had exhausted telling me all the things they would love to  do, I said, “wow it sounds like you would be out doing this every day if you could”, and they wistfully said “yeah, that’s for sure”

Then they said, “What do you do?” and I answered, well that’s kind of funny.

“I show people how to start a business that  so they have the money to go help animals all day and not worry about how the bills are going to get paid” and I shut up and answered her questions.

I introduced her to the distributor that I was giving them to and began to say my good byes.

But of course, before leaving I said, “Who else do you know that would be interested in getting a business going so they can go leaflet with you all day?”

He ended up with 5 phone numbers and two new distributors.

I always wondered ho many people thought Charlie and I were nuts handing out CD’s and newspapers.

It’s all about belief.  I guarantee you the same people that “could never do that” would be CD handing out fools if someone offered them a job that paid $30,000 a month to do just that?  They just don’t believe that activity will pay them that.

I woud love to hear more real llife exapmples like ShowYouCare posted rather than the theory of it all?????  This is a contact sport!

Wow... and interesting thread read. I think cold market leads are great for new folks if they have the shy factor. It helps build their confidence and get's them ready to move into their warm market without having as much fear. I use cold market leads all the time and found many distributors.

I guess when I am in public, I try to collect information,  I try not to give a business card unless I can get one. THen I follow up by phone. I try to meet new folks all the time, because my confidence level is much better than 10 years ago when I first started in this industry.

So for new folks in my business, if they have a shy factor, I tell them we will use a script and call cold market folks for practice. They know what to expect so they are not dissappointed and when they can close on cold market their confidence soars. They don't get too upset by rejection because they are rejected by a total stranger. Then when they are ready, we go to their warm market list. So people have so much fun with the cold market, they still do that too.

I guess what I have learned is there are way too many people out there looking for me, too many people want to be successful in something other than their j-o-b.  If I can't close it out, then it is NEXT and that is what I show my new distributors via leads.

Take care and happy halloween!

Great post Chris...and this sums it all up...

"It’s all about belief.  I guarantee you the same people that “could never do that” would be CD handing out fools if someone offered them a job that paid $30,000 a month to do just that?  They just don’t believe that activity will pay them that."

Chris, I think the brilliant thing about this business is that anyone can work anyway the want.  As you said, it's all about belief.  One person may believe that newspapers are the lousiest way in the world to generate leads.  Someone without that belief may use newspapers to earn $50,000 a month.  Because that's their belief.  And that works for them.

For me, it's just a matter of efficiency.  I prefer to spend my time ONLY with people who have asked for information on what we do.  Thus, the only time I would offer someone information on my business in our city is if they asked me what I do and -- after getting a short answer -- asked for more details.  I'll give them a card and tell them to call me the next day when I'm in the office.

As such, that works for me.

So, I agree that there are probably ways to hand out unsolicited marketing materials that don't feel like "work".  But, regardless of how much fun Charlie was having handing out CDs....it's not my cup of tea.  Which is probably one reason why Charlie made alot of money with that particular method and I didn't.  :)

By the way, I didn't know Charlie but I was sad to hear of his passing several weeks ago.  He was a "name" in the industry and impacted alot of people.

I am not an incredibly "successful" man in MLM or network marketing. But, one thing that I found works real well with "new" affiliates is to "educate" them on our product, and then have them offer free "trials" of our product. It takes away the "fear" of rejection and opens many doors wherein a "frontal" assault of our opportunity would be wasted. Once the "prospect" has had a chance to see how easy the products are to use, I have my affiliates ask if they could see where the products would be easy to market.

THEN ... comes the invitation to at least look at the opportunity.

Just a thought ... from an up and coming guy.

This may work in your particular business opportunity, but I strongly urge against this sort of thing in a product or service industry that does not provide the dealer with free samples to give out or subscribe to.

This can be a dangerous thing to do if it's coming out of your pocket.

I am not against it, but I strongly urge free samples to come with a purchase of something else to be incentive with an actual payoff.

Just $.002

I know that there is no "right" answer to the initial question. So, I raise doubts about the reasoning behind not demonstrating your belief in product demonstration to drive production.

The reason I suggest the initiation of product vs opportunity to "cold market" candidates is my belief that the product is indeed the driver behind the success of a company, not the compensation package. If the products aren't a viable or marketable utility, then all you have is the compensation package as the "keynote" to the Opportunity. I believe that if you don't believe in the product, that you are in the wrong business (Speaking figuratively of course, it is not meant to be a denunciation of your specific beliefs or company).

I realize that this approach won't work in EVERY opportunity (It is very difficult to give someone a "SAMPLE" insurance policy or other non-tangible services or products. But, generally speaking, if people can "touch, see, smell, taste or hear" the product, they can be sold on it's marketablility .... and in turn ... it's value as a commodity to drive opportunity.

Just my opinion.

Great story Chris. After reading this thread, I've came to the conclusion that there is no "right" way to succeed. Only what's right for you.
I noticed many different ways that seemed to contradict each other and some that complemented each other.

For me, I have many different things that I use or have used.
Leads
PPC
Forums
Articles
My own web pages
Networking sites
News letters
Face to face
Blogs
And a few more.
The only one I don't use any more is PPC

The most important part is the follow up. We hear over and over  again that "The success is in the follow up"
Absolutely true, yesterday, I was in my usual coffee place, and asked the young manager who is just awesome "what she plans to do with the rest of her life" She said she is thinking about that right now, she is very bright.

So I said Megan I am going to take your picture, I always have my digital camera with me, and send you something. She was surprised, and I also asked her if she does Christmas Cards, and she said this is the first year she has planned to do that.
So I am right now uploading her picture and going to send her a great card with her picture inside explaining briefly how she can use this system.

The other person is the owner of the Sushi Restaurant, I went to last night, (Sound like I never eat home doesn't it?) Well I am a basketball coach widow this weekend, and I indulge when that happens, dinner and a movie,
and shopping of course.

Anyway Toshi, is his name has a good sense of humour, and so he let me take his picture. As I sat there by myself I was observing what  he is currently doing with his new restaurant. He is going around to his patrons and giving them a member card for 15% off each time they come in and he writes in a book their name addresses and phone number, Hmmmmm.
I wondered what he is going to do with those names, but that is the question in my follow up after sending him a card.

So I have a card going out as we speak to Toshi, to show him  how he could upload all those names in to his own Sendoutcards contact manager and mail them a "Thanks for Coming" a Welcome, a Xmas card, promotions, he could send to hundreds in a minute. He can set up campaigns. Can't wait to follow up this one.

You see the opportunities are all over the place. By doing this I get many, many interested people for my business.
Have to get out there folks, and follow up. Anyone who wants to learn and work with me, just let me know.  This has been the major part of my success in this industry. I have made millions over the past 13 years,  most of my success is the above as well as talking and  cold calling to people on the net.
Our income currently in this industry is at the point where most would sit back and just cash the check, but you know what? the reality is and the fun is doing the  above and helping others do the same and teaching them to learn to be better at talking with others.

Happy Socializing, it's a lot of fun. Love to talk with you further, you can email me and we can chat.

Best Mary

I've read through this very interesting forum, and although I am new here, please permit me to suggest one thing:

There's no magic in small dreams.  If you put in mediocre effort, you get mediocre results.  I will spare you all the cliche's...

My only point is, the success I've had, (and it has been substantial) is due to the simple but proven strategy of goal setting and not stopping until i've achieved the goal.  If I can't achieve reasonable goals within a defined period of time, then either i'm doing something wrong, or the system is not right for me.

I'll be happy to share offline (or online if the moderator permits) techniques that have consistently worked for me to drum up new customers, etc...

Best regards!

Hello Mare,

I have come in here several times to reply to this message. I am very good at meeting and talking to people. I have always enjoyed meeting people where ever I go. I haven't done that well transferring that ease to networking and meeting people to sign up in my business. I think once I got involved in a business I had an agenda that was picked up by the person thru vibration. I think I have a handle on that now. The universe is a very interesting plane. The under currents are stronger than we think. I can truly say that I have changed that now. I am a better listener. I seek first to understand then to be understood. I hear and remember more of their conversation. I repeat what they say. It takes time to put this together.

I enjoyed reading your thoughts and comments. It helped me to see the changes in myself..........Thanks for sharing.

Linda

You are very welcome,  it's good to hear that my thoughts help.
That old saying people don't care until they know how much
you care about them is so true.
Never think about the money  when sharing and offering
your service to others,  Share it like you don't need or care
about the money,  the benefits to them are much more important.
Also remember to share some good success stories  in using your product
or service. Stories sell always.
I was speaking with a lady recently that was sort of interested but
not biting on the service, but through asking questions about her
business, realized she has a website and could retail the cards on
there, that is when she peaked and was more interested.
Bingo I hit the button for her.

All the best in your business and much success.
Mary

AMEN,   Mare  you are the best, and it's been an honor to work with you over the years, you have such a great uncanny way of really getting to the point and understanding immediately what people want or need and that is key in this business.

My reasons are totally different from someone elses, and it's critical to find out what other peopel want, because if you help others get what they want, you don't have to ever worry about yourself.

It's such fun working with wonderful awesome people.

It's rare in this business to find a true coach and mentor and you're one of the best.  I appreciate you.

Over the years I've had MANY MANY MANY people that ended up being con artists and crooks, and those that may read this will know who they are.

On the flip side of that, people like you that are honest and care about others, have come along, but few and far between, which is a  shame.  I am thankful that you called me up and we met and honored to have gotten to work with you over the past years.

Thanks for all you do.

Di
