You're welcome H.C.
I would agree that staying focused and branding yourself in a specific niche is a good idea. Personal development guru's do this, like Tony Robbins or Zig Ziglar. Real Estate seminar people do it as well like a Carlton Sheets for example. I'm sure there are examples in almost every industry.

I suffered through this mistake my first 13 years or so in MLM!!!!
I was filled with P and V all that time - wanting to change the world - KNOWING I could change the world.
Trust me when I say - the world will chew you a new one if you approach with that attitude.
Just save yourself - don't save the world.
There's pleny of room for everyone - don't compare or compete with anyone or any other business - just focus on what you love to do - why you joined your business in the first place.
Just raise your own energy - let that "change things"
Enjoy life!
Doug

| I couldn't agree more with what you said re most people's thinking and that they are going to get rich without any effort. Anything worth having takes effort. It doesn't matter what you do; whether it be in your personal life or your business life. This is how we learn and grow!

Personal branding is the key to your success online. The faster you learn this, the quicker your business actually starts to produce for you...
One the "Good Guys" in this entire industry just wrote a great book on this. He's been very successful in MLM, Direct Sales, Online Marketing and Passive types of programs (which I have no clue about really),
And we would all be well advised to take a look at his ebook
"Attraction Marketing Blueprint".
His name is Brad Weinman and he's been teaching the fine art of personal branding and "attraction" marketing for years now online.
Don't worry, no affiliate links from me... just take a look at his sales letter for the ebook and that alone will give you several "ah-hah" pointers to consider in your business.
I've been actually on his team for several years and we all really bugged him enough about it that he actually wrote the thing.
But yes, in a nutshell, you must learn the art of blending your business with YOU, Inc. because in the end, people are smarter than you think...
They are always measuring you up. Would you join YOU in business if you were your prospect?
Why would you? What do you bring to the table that will help a new person pick you as a business partner?
Learning how to answer these questions honestly can only do wonders in your growth and the results you get from your business.
I constantly try to better myself and at the same time, stay humble and always learning.
Anyway, let me know what you think of "Brado's" book which is totally generic in scope with no sales pitches for any programs... just good marketing education.
Google it and go direct. Enjoy.

Definitely words of wisdom.
The people that are most successful in my teams are the ones who respond to my initial communication with them and actually request my help when they need it.
When a team leader sincerely helps his/her downline, they are loyal and high-producing members. This creates a long-term relationship and works well by my own experience.

One of the things I like to help my clients understand is this concept:
Why would someone want to do business with you as opposed to another rep from your company? What makes you different? Are you independent or just following everyone else?
The truth is, most people don't really care that much about your company's history or compensation plan. What someone wants to know when they join you in business is this:
"Do you have a system that you are using to create success yourself now, and will you help and support me as I learn your proven system?"
(If you know how to effectively market your business, you can make whatever income you want regardless of the type of comp plan.)
A system is NOT the typical 'make up your list' or 'start handing out samples' routine. Someone wants to see your results and a REAL marketing system that is based on design and not on chance. If you are not getting good results yourself and try to recruit other people, their is either a flaw in the so-called 'system' you are following or a flaw within yourself.
I see people all the time who are not having success who then try to recruit people and then tell them 'all you need to do is follow the system.' Think about that: if the system you are promoting is all you need to follow; if you are not having success, you need to either question the system or question your actions to determine how you can change that.
People sign up with people, and not with companies. Prospects deserve to know what makes you different than all the other thousands of reps in your company. When you figure that out and start promoting yourself first; you will begin to attract the type of people you want to work with and earn more credibility with your prospects.
Remember, you need a business built by design, and not by chance.

I agree that we definitely need to "Market Ourselves" first, then the business second, but how many network marketers actually do this? Talk about a niche.
A friend of mine just got out of a company because she found out her student loan did not go toward her last semester of school and now they are requesting that she pay $5k for the classes she took.
She explained this to her sponsor, and said that she would not be able to pay her autoship payment of $130/mo for a few months, until the school was taken care of. Why did her sponsor tell her to go ahead and upgrade her biz account so that she could keep her place in the downline? Upgrading would cost $700 and increase her autoshipment to $260 a month.
If she couldn't pay $130, how the heck was she going to pay $700 + 160 a month? He started out as a great sponsor; he was very attentive, and very helpful. But the minute she want out, he hasn't even returned her messages in 3 days. Before, he was talking to her several times a day, every day.
He did great marketing himself because that's what attracted her to him. He has wonderful success in NM, and makes a living with it full time. He got this part down pat. It's caring about your downline is where he could use some work but I don't think he could be taught this. You either have it or you don't.

What a great thread!
People are looking for leaders, someone who can train them and teach them.
It makes total sense to market ourselves first, yet how many marketers are taught this?
Instead most people are taught to market a company web site. It's certainly what I was doing.
Teaches people about the product and company, but next to nothing about the person behind the web site.
I do believe if new marketers learn how to market themselves successfully they will avoid a lot of the frustrations and pitfalls so common in this industry.
For sure it is what I am teaching everyone I bring into the business now.

I think that personal branding is different from just telling
people how good you are. Rather it is being able to position
yourself in doing what you love and also getting results out of it.
Like for me, if I like to perform forums and blogs I become a person
who is biased towards this point and will continue to work on it.
Then, I could say that I am ready to teach others to actually
have almost the same results or the same success.
However, seed time is the time when we're growing in our own
credibility. Leaders don't complain. They do it.

Branding myself has been the key to my success. After 4 years of struggle, the tides have turned in my business and we are now doing extremely well.
You must remember that in order to get the things you do not have, you must do the things you have not done. If you want to have a successful network marketing career, you must be a leader. You must work, and work consistently. You need to be an example, a success in your business that your new enrollees will want to duplicate. You must make sure your team can tap into either your training or decent company training so that they know what they should be doing.
If you arent at this point- get there, and quickly. If you dont see yourself as a leader...I'm not sure if this is really the place to be!

Hello,
What a great post. I remember when I first got into mlm. I really wanted to market my product. I didn't know how to use the forums. So, I took to learning as much as I could about search engine optimization. This is a slow process. Well now I am back and I want to learn to do exactly what you have described in this article. It makes a lot of sense. A friend of mind who post here a lot told me the same thing.
I will be doing a lot of reading and paying attention to those who are here to help.
Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,
Welcome to the forums. Yes well there are ways to actually
market online and then there's ways to market offline.
However, the secret is to be able to attract others to you and
then to achieve that is to be really good at something or to
be so productive at something you are appearing on
almost everyone's radar.

Thanks for the advice Vern. I have been around marketing for about 7 years now. I believe in this concept (mlm). I have just never mastered it. I welcome any helpful suggestions. I know a lot of these things it's just a matter of putting them into practice. Thanks again.

I appreciate the suggestions in this thread. It has been my experience, that to be a leader you have to act like a leader. To that you have to give information that will benefit the prospect not you. All of your marketing needs to be focused on the prospect.
When you present any business it should really focus and on interviewing the prospect to find out what their needs and desires are. Then helping to see how you can solve their problems. Selling yourself as to how your leadership skills and experience with mlm will benefit them not how it has benefited you.
If they like what has been previously mentioned get the vibes that you are selfish and looking out for number one, they are going to be repelled from you. Which is not what anyone wants.
They will not want anything to do with you or your business.

Dear Everyone,
Very awesome discussion taking place here. Although it is my first post in this forum, I already feel at home.
Whenever I market a business, I try to answer the following three questions in every message that reinforces what I stand for -- they are. - Who Are You?
- What Do You Do?
- Why Does It Matter?
Whether prospects search answers for these questions implicitely, reactively or passively, I find that I as a network marketer must articulate my unique advangates very clearly to their self-serving requests.
Thank you everyone for the great discussion.
Warmest Regards,
Takuya

FreedomFire,
Thank you ssssoooo much for this thread! I just read through the whole thread once and went back and read parts of it a second time. These are exactly the things I needed to hear.
dwarneke wrote:
I appreciate your post because I really am sick and tired of receiving letters in the mail and links to web sites that promise the moon. They always claim you can get rich with very little effort. Yea, right.
I loved what dwarneke said here. This is one of the things that makes me sick and I just can't do it. I'm glad to hear other people saying, "Don't do it!" I thought I was the only one out here that didn't want to spread all the hype. (Do understand I'm new at this and I'm only going on the examples sent to me by my upline) I want to be totally honest with people. I don't want to tell people they can be debt free in 6 months if it might take 2 years.
Even our company's examples of what to put in classified ads sounds like a bunch of hype that I would never check out if I was looking at the classifieds such as, "No more 9 to 5! Stop being a slave to the clock."....Oh my gosh, I can't tell what the company is about and it sounds like a hundred other "great jobs" that you can find in the classifieds.
I feel rejuvinated after reading this thread. I'm going to figure out how to truthfully advertise without the hype.
I did get the message that the first thing I have to do is market myself. I am going to have to figure out how I'm going to do that but I do appreciate everybody's input in this thread. It has helped me alot.

| I agree with entire branding process and allowing prospects to see you as an expert. I think this is the easiest way to build a business but I guess alot people forget his concept and end up doing traditional selling.
