I completely agree with marketing yourself first in MLM...
In fact, I'll go so far as to say that if you're in MLM because of how great your products are then you're missing the boat.
Successful network marketing is about relationships.
It is about staying true to what you're comfortable with and translating that into how you do business. That will begin to attract like-minded people to you...and that's what you want...people who hold the same values as you.

Is there any place easier to brand yourself than on the internet. Keep all of your web pages and blog pages consistent. Same header, same background, lead capture box on every page, your picture should be on every page.
You can do this on all email marketing as well. Add your header to the top, add you picture to the sig file. You are branding you and people start to feel like they know you even when they do not yet.

Think about popular brands (Pepsi, Nike, Mcdonald's), and then take a good look at yourself.
Of course, that doesn't mean that you must do what they did, but the success of these companies is all about branding.
So if you haven't start to brand yourself, then do it now!
When people realize that you are a trustworthy brand, then they will start to flock to you. This is the power of branding.

Branding is all about creating credibility and trust online. Anybody can brand himself and make a fortune in his home business when properly done. If you are going to succeed in whatever you do online, then you must strive to learn as much as you can so that you can display your knowledge and use it to serve others who need your information.
To create trust online, you need to give away and sell yourself first. When people patronize you and your business opportunity, they do so because they trust you and it is you they are actually patronizing. To sell yourself, you must give away your best information free. That way, your target audience will know that you are an expert and will have full confidence to deal with you.
One fact that you must know is this, people only buy from experts, when you establish yourself as one, then you will end up with as many leads as possible queuing up to read and learn from you.
The best ways to create credibility is through the written word. You can distribute articles on the major article directories to gain exposure and attract attention from people who are seeking for the information you are providing. You can also join groups or forums and display your knowledge by providing high quality information to the group at the places where your information is welcome.
However, you need to benefit yourself while doing this, how? You can do that by placing a link at the end of every comment, tips, article that you give away to people. This link will be responsible as a medium to contact you and at the same time get all the names and emails of everyone who ever seeks you out.
We call it a squeeze page. I mean the link that you will attach at the bottom of every of your post online. It should give something away to everyone who lands on it. This will help you to build a highly qualified lead that you can market to anytime you wish.

I just wrote a post on this on my blog...marketing yourself and not your products that is.
Some people have suggested that you must market yourself by being an expert and knowing all the right answers so you can pass them on which will build trust. That's a nice idea.
But if you've spent a lot of time and money getting nowhere in your network marketing opportunity, then you don't really have much to pass on, do you?
I'm blessed because I have surrounded myself with people who are experts NOT because they came out of the womb knowing how to successfully do network marketing BUT because they learned the hard way in the school of hard knocks you could say.
Yes, they are utilizing the most current techniques in social networking now but it wasn't always that way...and that's the part that attracts me the most. That there was a time that they didn't know all the answers. Their human side.
You must bond with a person to want to do business with them.

For a very long time, I believed that marketing mavericks in this business made their money from the product alone.
it's taken years for me to realize and develope myself and my mindset to the point where I finally "got it".
Now I see results, and it's true, people buy people. Making money in any business is a relationship business save for a vew specialized professions (lawyers, practioners, etc.).

You guys are 100% correct. People are not only buying a product but buying you as a leader. To get paid 6 figures in this world you MUST become a leader and someone who is respected. The reason people fail in this industry is they dont understand that, the employee mentality is too overbearing.
Working from home is great, but you must focus on becoming a master prospector, closer, and lead generator.
In my five years working from home I have found the answers also and it is well worth it.

What makes your opportunity special?
What makes it something that people should sign up for?
Is it the product? The amazing comp plan? The super cool Web site with the videos?
No, absolutely not.
What makes YOUR opportunity special is YOU.
Let's face it. Once people know what business your promoting, they could Google it and find 100 other people promoting that very same business.
So what you need to do is make your opportunity unique by adding your personality to it. Let potential customers see the face behind the opportunity so they can connect with you.
How do you accomplish this? Here are some ways:- Start your own blog. You can start a blog in a matter of minutes. That's all it takes. I prefer Typepad but if you want to go no-cost then user Blogger. There is no reason for anyone not to have a blog if they are promoting on-line. No reason.
- Upload videos of yourself to YouTube. With my iMac computer I am able to upload vidoes to YouTube in 5 minutes. That's all it takes. If you don't have a computer with a Webcam, I suggest you go get one. I don't even bother to take off my glasses or make my bed. I just let people see me exactly as I am! Let the real YOU shine through.
- Participate in on-line forums like this one. Everyone has a unique perspective to share. Take the time to engage in the dialogue and bring your uniqueness to the party.
- Write articles on Squidoo and HubPages about things you care about. Sure you could insert your business opportunity ever other sentence and try to win at the SEO game but how about you write an article that is purely aimed at helping people succeed in their businesses? That way, when they Google your name they'll see that you actually do have something to offer, that you aren't just a marketing machine but a real person that can help them.
- Start our own Web site. Rather than using your replicated product Web site, why don't you build your own site that allows you to combine your unique personality with the product you are promoting? People think this is hard but it isn't. In fact, I recommend using a blogging tool like Typepad or Blogger to create your Web site. I do this all the time with Typepad using their "Pages" functionality and it works great because then I'm able to edit content very easily without messing around with HTML.
Those are just a couple of ideas but there are literally hundreds of ways to make your unique personality the very best thing about your business opportunity. I'd love to hear more idea on this thread, actually. What are other ways you guys have used to promote your brand instead of your product?

Speak from the heart: I was thinking tonight after reading some warm responses to one of my posts about a real experience of mine, a lesson learned. It's amazing the difference it makes when you speak from the heart--whether it's about a lesson learned, a struggle being experienced, a real desire to offer help/service, a genuine joy/triumph...people know. Things resonate more when spoken from the heart. One of my mentors has said that people don't buy your business, they buy you. This is seen in day-to-day interactions with those around you. Even small ways you reach out and build relationship greatly enhances a person's tendency to trust what you say, to let their guard down, to open up their mind.
Be real with people. Genuinely care about their lives, their success. Sometimes your business isn't right for them. And it should be ok with us to let that person go find what would suit them better.

Yes, I think this is very true.
Many people think that business is only about making money - which is actually taking money!
But really, it's about giving people something that's valuable to them. If you keep that attitude going you can gain extra enjoyment from your business, because you're giving it an extra dimension.
Some people don't appreciate this, unfortunately. They can't understand why you would be so generous and they probably won't come back. But that's fine, because a lot of people do appreciate a generous, giving approach and become regulars. They'll also recommend you to others. So it will come back and increase your earnings in the long run.

I agree, I would much rather do business with someone who I feel is being themselves and being honest, rather than the person who is just out to make money. I am rather new at internet marketing, and I find that it is much easier to write articles and posts when I speak on my terms and be myself, instead of following guidlines from a book. I hope my customers like who they are dealing with and know that I am being truthful in what I say.
