Here is a recent article I wrote for a few publications... Hopefully it will help some of you out....
"How To Generate Your Own Red-Hot Home Business Leads"
It should be no surprise that the lifeblood of ANY MLM or home
based business is having plenty of leads to talk to. It’s also no
secret that you make money in Network Marketing by doing two
things.
opportunity!
Whatever the situation, the only logical answer short of closing up
shop is that you need to find a way to expose your home business or
MLM to more people, otherwise known as acquiring leads.
There are two ways to get leads, you can buy generic home based
business leads or you can generate your own.
Before we start talking about how to generate your own targeted
leads, let’s go ahead and talk about the first option which is
buying generic home business leads. This seems to be where most
network marketers focus their time, money and energy.
The first thing that you must know about ANY home business lead
that you purchase is that no matter how many buzzwords are used in
describing that lead. No matter how fresh it is or how good that
lead sounds it’s still someone that you don’t know, that doesn’t
know you, doesn’t know anything about your business there is no
guarantee that they are going to pick up the phone or give you a
second of their time to discuss joining your home business.
90% of purchased leads are produced by people filling out generic
online forms about making more money from home and you don’t know
the circumstances about why they filled out these online forms.
Were they looking for a Job instead of a home business opportunity?
Were they trying to win a free Xbox?
Where they drunk behind the computer at 3:00 am?
You just don’t know!
There are really no way cut corners on prospecting the leads that
you purchase. Oftentimes you are competing with several other people
who are contacting the same leads and the only way to make these
types of leads pan out for you is to buy large quantities and sort
through them to see who has an interest. So here is my suggestion
for network marketers using these types of leads:
#1 - Keep your costs down when you buy “cold” leads. I don’t
suggest spending more than 30 cents a lead! Most MLM lead
companies online sell leads for $1 to $5 apiece… Stay away from
these high priced leads and use a service like BigTimemlmLeads
where you can get surveyed leads for as little as 14 cents apiece.
#2 - Start to put together a strategy to generate you own home
business leads and phase out the cold contact leads over time.
Okay, now for the really fun stuff and the best strategy for
building your home business. How do you as a home business owner
go out and start generating your own targeted mlm / home business
leads?
The first thing you must understand about the process of generating
your own home business leads is that it takes time and it’s not
something that happens overnight. You have many hoops that you
have to jump through in order to get yourself set up with
everything you’re going to need.
The goal of generating your own leads is to leverage your time and
efforts by being able to cut corners on the “sorting” process as
well as position yourself highly with your leads. This means that
when you do actually talk to them on the phone they already have an
understanding of who you are and what your opportunity and/or
product is all about.
This makes your job promoting your home business much easier and
leaves your prospects much more responsive to what you want them to
do.
So know that we know WHY we want to generate our own positioned
leads… It’s now time to look into the step by step process of
doing so.
---------------------------------------------------------
So here is the "formula for success" when it comes
to generating your own leads:
Step #1 – Get an online presence.
Your “Online Presence” is where you will send prospects to find out
more information about you and your opportunity.
Step #2 – Drive traffic to your website / capture page.
There are hundreds of different marketing strategies to drive
traffic to a website online. The important this is to get as many
people to your “Online Presence” as possible.
Step #3 - Convert your traffic into leads.
Using a regular website for your “Online Presence” won’t cut the
cake! You need the power of a good capture page that will convert
your visitors into leads. The goal of a good capture page isn't to
sell people on the opportunity rather educate them on who you are
and sell them on what you are going to share with them and why they
just gotta see what's on the other side.
Step #4 - Introduce your prospects to your Opportunity.
After your prospect opts in and becomes a lead you then want to
give them some background information about your company and
opportunity before you ever get on the phone with them.
---------------------------------------------------------
Although this might sound a bit confusing at first, it’s really a
simple and profitable formula once you get the hang of it. Let’s
break down each step and show you exactly what you need to
make this system happen.
Step #1 – Get an online presence - Custom Capture Page vs.
Generic Capture Page
The first thing you need to do to generate your own targeted MLM /
home business leads is get a capture page that you direct your
online marketing efforts and potential prospects to.
What exactly is a capture page you might be asking? Simply put,
a capture page is a website that gives prospects a small amount of
information about you and your opportunity and gives them a chance
to “Opt-In” or “Request” more information about what you have to
offer.
Now I’m guessing that many of you reading this might have a generic
capture page because lots of network marketing companies out there
provide them.
Although a generic capture page is better than nothing, it lacks
many key functions you need if you truly want to generate
“Positioned” leads that have a background about you and your
opportunity.
Some other BIG problems with generic capture pages are that they’re
not unique and you have no control over the look and feel of them.
What I consider a much better thing to do is to go out and create
your own custom capture page. Why? We’ll for many reasons… First
off you have control over the content and development of your page.
Second, you have the ability to make your capture page unique and
sell yourself as much as the business you are selling.
Remember, the goal of a good capture page is to give people a bit
of information about yourself and a bit of information about your
opportunity and combine this information in a compelling way that
gets your prospects interested in what you are talking about.
There are several ways to build or get a CUSTOM capture page:
#1 - You can build one from scratch all by yourself. To do this
you will need to sign up for a web hosting account with Yahoo,
HomeStead, GoDaddy or any of the other web hosting companies online
and proceed to build a page from scratch. Most of these web
hosting companies will have easy to use site builders that you can
use to do this and web hosting usually runs between $10 and $20 a
month.
The downside to building your own capture page from scratch is that
you’re on your own in terms of what to write, how to design it and
how to make it work effectively. Since you’re on your own it could
take a lot of trial and error before you get something that
actually produces. If you are not an expert at writing ad copy,
website design, graphics and sales this probably isn’t the best
option for you.
#2 – Another way to get a custom capture page built is to hire a
professional to do it for you. Depending on where you go this can
cost between $300 and $1000 for one very solid capture page. I’ve
been building professional capture pages for years and I know that
I usually charge $75 an hour with the average project costing
around $500 to $1000. Plus I charged a web hosting fee for that
page of $20 a month.
The downside to having someone else build your capture page is that
it is very hard to make changes after the page is built. What if
you want to use a new picture or change the re-direct link? Often
times you are at the mercy of the designer and additional edits
will probably cost you money.
#3 – The 3rd way for a home business owner or network
marketer to get their own custom capture page is to use a complete
capture page design and marketing service, like MyCaptureSystem.
The MyCaptureSystem program gives you all the tools to build an
unlimited number of your very own custom capture pages.
MyCaptureSystem, hosts your pages for you, gives you pre-written ad
copy and website designs, has a marketing resource center that
shows you how to drive traffic to your pages, plus many advanced
marketing features that can kick your lead generation efforts into
high gear.
Since YOU build the page, you can always make edits to those pages
yourself and manage all your marketing campaigns from one easy to
use back office.
Step #2 – Drive traffic to your capture page.
After you’ve created a great custom capture page the second step of
generating your own leads is to drive traffic to your new online
destination.
So how do you do this… Many different ways.
Pay-Per-Click Search engines
Article submission online
Blogging
Press Releases
Posting on Message boards and forums
Ezine articles
Search engine submission
Offline advertising
Traffic exchanges
Purchased traffic
Plus many many more!
Traffic generation is not an easy thing to master. It will take
some patience and education on your end to learn and implement
several different traffic generation strategies.
There are many different training organizations, ebooks, manuals
and courses online that can teach you how to drive traffic to your
websites. Some of them are great resources while others lack in
actual value. Some of my favorite marketing personalities are,
Terry Duff & Gino Nicoli of the Dream Team & Jonathan Mizel of the
Online Marketing Letter.
If you decide to build your capture page using MyCaptureSystem,
don’t forget that your subscription includes weekly LIVE training
teleseminars and access to the marketing resource center full of
step-by-step traffic generation techniques.
Step #3 – Convert visitors into leads & measure your success.
As you start to generate your own leads from your capture page the
biggest thing you need to do is track your results. This is really
what separates professionals from those that lose money attempting
to generate their own leads.
You want to track your results in a few different ways…
#1 – How many people visit your page compared to how many opt-in
and become a lead.
#2 – What campaigns are worth the money and which ones are a
waste of money.
Here is what I mean by this. Let’s say you are doing two paid
advertising campaigns in hopes of generating leads via your custom
capture page.
The first campaign is a $200 Google pay per click search engine
campaign and the second one is a $200 pay per click campaign from
BigCashTraffic.com. If you let these campaigns run together
without separating them than you will never know which one paid off
the best (meaning generated you the most amount of leads for the
money).
So how do you do you track your results?
Well there are several different services that can help you track
your advertising. An example of this is HyperTracker.
HyperTracker is a service that provides you different tracking
URL’s for each of your different marketing campaigns. This is a
very valuable tool for online marketing and sells for $19.95 a month.
I would suggest using HyperTracker if you end up building your own
capture pages from scratch or hire someone to build them for you.
If you decide to use MyCaptureSystem to build your capture pages,
don’t spend the $19.95 for HyperTracker because this feature is
already built into the program.
Step #4 – Introduce your prospects to your opportunity.
So now that you’ve built an awesome custom capture page (or pages),
started driving traffic to that capture page, and have a way to
track the responsiveness of your page, it’s now time to decide
where you want to send your prospects after they become leads.
This is very important because you want to educate your prospects
as much as possible before you ever pick up the phone to talk to
them.
There are two basic strategies you can implement:
#1 – Do a simple redirect to your corporate website, movie
presentation, or any website that will educate your new leads about
the home business opportunity you are involved with.
#2 – Do option #1 PLUS input them into an auto-responder series of
emails. An auto-reponder is a software service that automatically
sends out follow-up emails to your leads or subscribers without you
having to manually do it.
While option #1 is very simple to accomplish and will get the job
done, tying your new leads up in a follow-up series of emails can
be very beneficial. The top autoresponder companies’ online right
now are Aweber & GetResponse.
So there you have it… Its time to get out there and start
generating your own leads!
By now your head might be spinning a little bit and you might even
be thinking that this is too complicated for you to go do yourself.
Relax and take it one step at a time. Generating your own home
[size= business leads will take some effort but it can actually become
pretty easy if you start using some of the powerful tools like
outlined in this article]
As you go on your way today, just remember that marketing your home
business is all about hitting it from multiple different angles and
taking time to educate yourself on how to be successful.

It's really a paradox, but if you realy want to sponsor more people, then you should take the time to build relationships. This is contrary to the common belief that you can impulse people quickly into buying by giving them hyped-up advertisements and business presentations.
The key word is incubation. Let the fresh leads who come to you daily build desire about your products or business opportunity. Give them more freebies than they can handle. Whether they purchase or not, offer some useful help about their BIZ..not yours. This will create buying tension..and will eventually cause the prospect to sell themselves over time..
To go fast, go slow.
Nurture your non-buying prospects for months and even years...and someday your efforts will bring fruit. (if you have at least 1,000 people in your "pool", that factor is already enough to give you a full time income!!)
More insights in my next forum post..

I couldn't agree more...creating a personal bond with another human is the most effective and efficient path to success. However, generating the lead flow necessary to run a successful MLM company can be daunting. Once the initial connection is made with the person who's interested, the bond is established, and business can be done.
Best of luck to you in your ventures.

I am new to the forum, but am excited to be here since I am still contemplating spending $2000 on training that is suppose to help me add 20-30 reps per week. Anyway, My Question is, I have done some interenet marketing and had some success I added 4 people last month without much effort, answering the phone, three ways etc. you know the gig. I have a list of 30 contacts that I have spoken to once on a three way with my upline(which i am learning is not the best technique), and they will not answer the phone when I follow up with them. Have i ruined the relationship ( I have only tried to fu 1 time with most), obviously we did not build enough value, is this normal we close about 10% of the callers. Is there Approach I can use that will speed them up or do i just wait until they come to their senses?
I guess it's the 80-20 rule right-

I am new to the forum, but am excited to be here since I am still contemplating spending $2000 on training that is suppose to help me add 20-30 reps per week.Sheesh.....let me save you some money. Anyone who's charging you $2k to teach you how to be successful in this business isn't doing you any favors. Heck, call me on my office line when I'm not busy prospecting or hanging out with my family and I'll tell you EXACTLY how to become a professional recruiter in less than 3 hours a day.
And if you're just itching to write a check, I'll be glad to take it. But, no, you don't need to spend $2k to learn how to do this with fingertip control. ESPECIALLY if the company you're talking to has the word "Predator" in their company name or is affiliated with reverse-pitch marketing. (I suspect I know who you're talking about).
I guess it's the 80-20 rule right- Hmm..well, the 80/20 rule is actually more about working with a team. About 80% of the volume in your group will come from 20% of the people.
In relation to your question, it's simply a matter of allowing people to make whatever decision they feel is best for them. In other words, it's not about convincing, persuading or "closing" people. If you are positioning yourself as someone worth meeting who's got an idea worth sharing....if you are remaining emotionally detached from the outcome....if you're simply creating the space for THEM to make whatever decision is in alignment with their own goals....
...then there's nothing left for you to do. I think keeping them in an autoresponder might allow you to follow up with them in a passive way.
But, the bottom line is this: if they won't pick up the phone when you call (or return your call when you leave a message), then they're not a prospect. You'd be better of spending your time with people who ARE open to making 2008 different than 2007.
Does that assist you?

God Bless,
Michael True. But it's also an enormous thread that takes forever to navigate. Lead generation is a big topic for a lot of people. Should they buy leads? From who? What kind? What's the difference? How much should they pay? Or is self-generated the way to go? What's the best way? Do newspapers still work? What about direct mail?
I think it's reasonable that someone with a specific question would probably want to start a thread about it. They're more likely to get a quick, relevant answer than if their question gets lost in a long thread that's dozens of pages long.
Plus, it's good for the forum, too. I would bet that most people would much rather see lots of small, specific, individual conversations than one big fat thread that just continues to grow.
Most of us that have been here for a long time remember when this was an exciting, active forum. It'd be nice to see the conversations pick up again.
But, then again, this is just my opinion. Nothing more!

Tony,
We get the same questions asked over and over again .... including all of those those you posed as examples .... with the same answers over and over again. Those specific questions are all answered in this thread. Posting them seperately doesn't make the forum better .... it just junks it up. That's NOT good for the forum. In fact Members have stated as such and want consolidation wherever possible so there's 1 place to look ... vice hundreds all saying the same thing and bumping down other informative threads on other interesting topics.
I agree about the old days but that has more to do with the dynamics of the changeover in format and the effect that had at the time .... plus the disappearence of some old time contributors. However, this is still a pretty active Forum without the soap opera and spamfest found in others of it's kind.
Now .... back to the subject at hand. We return you to your normal channel. Post away about "all things leads".
God Bless,
Michael

OK! There has been a lot of discussion on the NWM/MLM forums about the use of Free Survey Leads and the quanities one can get depending if you want to upgrade with a one time fee.
I joined and did the one time upgrade for $30 to get 400 surveyed leads a week.
The challenges in using a free lead source are, you don't know how many times they've been sold, how they really got the capture information, and how many people are now trying to contact the by phone or email now that they are free leads.
Here are my statistics for the last week: I sent out 800 individual emails from 3/24 - 3/28, Mon - Fri. On any one day I would have as many as 20 bounce back bad email addresses.
Now the key is what kind of response did I get. I can send out 25 in about 20 minutes. So I would spend an average of an hour and 45 minutes a day sending out emails. My response for the entire week of those who went to my sizzle website and called the sizzle line was two (2)!
I ask you, is this a good investment of my time? I have decided "NO!" I would better spend my time posting free classified ads and placing my website addresses to my different capture pages.
I'm not surprised at the above results but on the other hand I would have thought the response to have been a "tad" higher. I do not have the luxury of capital to subscribe to a good email blaster system with auto responders. I don't think the results would be any better with it anyway.
Just my experience with this project. Anyone else? Thoughts?

Many of us who are in the network marketing business are guilty of spending
hundreds of dollars buying leads that are made up of business opportunity
seekers. We do these because we have been taught to do these by either the
company we belong to or our upline.
If you have been doing this, you will agree with me that it is difficult to get
5 out of every 100 leads that you call to talk about your business opportunity.
Most of these people are so rude on the phone and wouldn’t want to hear you
pitch your MLM to them.
Do you know why cold calling can be so ineffective in growing your network
marketing business? It is because people you call are in different mood and are
not seeking for you. Most of them do not even want to hear about MLM. The most
annoying thing about it is, it is so humiliating and discouraging when the
people you are calling feels you are getting on their nerves with your
business.
If you want to have success in network marketing, you must stop wasting your
money on leads. You must stop cold calling. It is not worth it my friend. The
best way is to set some attraction marketing techniques up online to get people
hunting you down and asking to join your business. You must learn how to generate your own leads.
The fastest way to do that is to use and leverage the power of the Internet.
With the Internet, you can filter your information across to only hot and
targeted people who are actually looking for a good home based business to
join.
This is effectively done using latest traffic generation strategies that will
get people who are looking for you with the right keywords to your website and
subsequently to your downline.
Now tell me, who would be more responsive in these two scenario;
- Someone you approach to join your business or
- Someone who was looking for a good opportunity and found and contact you?
The latter is the answer if you would agree with me. The only way you can force that to happen in your business is by implementing latest technology into your marketing business and witness as your income grows each month.

| I agree that letting the internet do the sorting for you is much better than cold calling anyday. I would say that once you have cultivated a lead calling it gives you a leg up over the person just following up by email or an autoresponder.

As I've said many times there's 3 primary methods of getting leads.....generate them yourself, have someone else do that for you......or both.
The reality is find what best works for you and just do it....with conviction, dedication, persistence, and consistency.
God Bless,
Michael

Hi,
I don't recommend you to buy leads from compagnies. What I want to suggest you is to generate your own leads. It much more better and maybe less expensive. Your compagny will grow faster with your own leads.
Have a good evening or day.

Hi everyone on the forum,
The only leads that have ever been successful for me have been leads that I generated myself from a blog, website or squeezepage. They seem to be the most responsive if I give something first before trying to sell them something.
Leads that I have bought in the past from lead companies or guaranteed signups have had dismal open rates and almost have not responded at all.
Traffic exchanges, forums, blogs, classified ads and newsletters have generated the best and most responsive leads ever and even after they buy something, we still have an ongoing relationship online.
Giving something of value to a prospect builds trust first and then they are more open to doing business in the future.
If you give value first the business will come.

Create a landing page or flash page that offers a way for people to get a free information packet sent to them.
Don't ask for every bit of info. We all want it, but gather it slow over a period of time.
Email: I choose to get this first. I test this and let them know that I test the email before ever getting my free info. This way they know it is a must.
First Name: I choose to gather only the first name, people seem to be comfortable sharing this.
Phone: This comes later on after I have emailed them a packet. I leave it open ended so that they ask questions. I ask them to "act" on the information provided I usually give them a gift for their time. FREE SAMPLE or something.
I get all the info in about three messages. I have developed this system after listend to my customers. They didn't like filling out all the info at one time without knowing me. It is a known fact people do business with people they know, like and trust. Show them these features and they will give you the world.
Just my two cents that has been working.
