Hi Ya'll,
Here's a tip many may not be aware of. If anyone has other "I Never Thought Of That" insights....please share them as replies.
GENERATING PUBLICITY ON A ZERO BUDGET
The most overlooked method of generating publicity for your business can be had with three simple lines of text:
Your Name
Your Business Name or Your Domain Name
Your City and State
All over the world, there are newspapers, magazines, online ezines and websites. Every single newspaper, magazine and online ezine generally accepts and publishes "Letters to the Editor."
In addition, webmasters are generally looking for solid testimonials that they can use on their websites.
Just think, if you were to take the time to read a few publications or visit a few websites and take the time to notify the publisher of your thoughts, you might just find your comments being published in all sorts of locations. You never know just where your next paying customer might come from, so take the time to get yourself quoted in these media outlets. You might just find more and more traffic and sales coming from places where you would never think to buy advertising.
NOTE: If you have other "Hmmmmm" ideas...by all means share them here as replies. We'll make this thread a repository for them to beshared with Forum members all in one place.
God Bless,
Michael

Good post Michael!
What do you think of this idea?
I have never done it,it may work ,it may not.
It costs ZERO money so the risk is zero.
You can place FREE Help Wanted ads at your local Unemployement office.
In our case we would put it under the section SALES.
Now,most people there are looking for a 9-5 job
and and an hourly rate but,,,,,what if you got just
two good people out of it?
Has anyone tried this?

I think you answered your own question on this: the overwhelming majority of people who respond will be people who are looking for a job, not a home business. That the flyers are posted at the unemployment office will probably further reduce the quality of prospects since those people are usually already at the end of their rope, have lost their jobs and are there to apply for unemployment benefits.
I know marketers who do fairly well by placing "help wanted" ads in the sales sections of newspapers. By putting them in a newspaper instead of the unemployment office, you tend to attract people who are serious about working in sales but they aren't in the "dire straits" of needing to be down at the unemployment office.
But, again, the vast majority of those people are looking for a wage or a salary, not an opportunity start and own their own home business. You tend to talk to more people who aren't qualified for your time.

Thats what I figured.
MOST people(99%) who go down to the unemployment office
are in "dire straights" and in need of a job.
Many who are there cant even afford a decent pair of shoes
let alone buy some kit from a mlm and they could
be just one notice away from eviction.
If you got one good rep from your ad in a month you
probably would be doing super!.
Well so much for that idea.

Consider writing articles.
You can get lots of free publicity if your article is picked up and published in ezines or as content in websites ... especially affective if the audience of the ezine and/or website targets your niche market.
Remember...just 1 ezine or website could reach 1,000s of potential prospects for you.
A key point is to write an article that is informative and useful to the reader....not an ad. Resource oriented or "tip" focused articles do well.
Remember to submit your articles to publishers and webmasters that you know....PLUS to article directories where publishers and webmasters go for content (see the Article Discussion Board here for ideas).
Don't put any personal links in your article....save them for your sigbox (short author bio). URLs which are actual domain names (not affiliate links) do best. Products and services do better than bizops too for links.
Another good place to have your articles published (in whole or refered to as a link) are blogs. Search engines spider blogs more frequently than regular sites. They'll pick up your link in the article and index it.
The more your article is picked up around the net the more incoming links will show up to your sites with the SEs. This does wonders for your PR (page rank) and ultimately traffic to your website(s).
An example of a good article directory to submit to is http://www.goarticles.com Do an author search for "Lemm" there (top right hand drop down menu) and you'll see about 40+ examples of my articles. See how it's done.
Another good artcile directory (there's bunches so do look around) is http://ezinearticles.com. Chris Knight runs a great program there.
God Bless,
Michael

Right on Michael .... I'm pretty excited about Article Marketing.
It is a considerably different venue than website content.
I have written quite a bit of Web Site copy for clients. Articles is a different matter.
There is a little bit of a learning curve there.
I was lucky enough to have a trusted friend turn me onto a way I could learn while at the same time take advantage of other article writer's efforts using a system called InfoGoRound that will let you claim authorship to other author's work with their permission.
There are hundreds of very well written articles available and the system makes available a way you can have all the articles you want for free.
Really pretty cool with a ton of free resources.

Writing articles is a very good way to generate publicity.
The problem I've had is how to track which publications actually generate the most leads. I have many domain names that are very descriptive and inspire people to click - but I still dont have enough to cover every place could submit to. If I chose to simply track clicks, then I could use a tracking url - but then I'd lose the impact of a good domain name.

Honestly, I don't track which sites generate the most leads. I use a program that submits to about 200 article sites and then I focus on just writing. You can PM me for the URL.

Great ideal,
You might also want to target the newspaper or magazine.
Now, you have a targeted audience.
Thanks,
Greg

Seven Step Tutorial
"Uncover The Secrets To Writing Successful
E-mail Promotions That Will Drive Swarms Of
Customers To Your Program, Products And Services"
What You'll Find in this Tutorial:
1. Why use e-mail to promote?
2. How to write effective content for e-mail promotions
3. Seven steps to e-mail success.
4. How to write subject lines that get your e-mails opened
5. How to format e-mail promotions
6. Tools for managing your e-mail campaigns
7. Final Strategies
Introduction
Food for thought as you read this tutorial. Common sense dictates that if you look at what million dollar marketers do, then copy it. You will do much better in your marketing activities than trying to re-invent the wheel.
There is nothing wrong with innovation or doing it "your way" but if you are not making a million dollars and you want to, try it the way million dollar marketers are doing it FIRST and test "Your Way" to a small group of people later and see the actual results you obtain before you try to get too innovative.
Using e-mail marketing to promote your program is one of the most effective marketing methods available -- and one we highly recommend.
In fact, we're such big believers in promoting through e-mail that we've written, tested and re-tested e-mail campaigns that you can copy, paste and send to your own customers -- and we've even included winning subject lines!
Of course, you don't have to use the e-mail promotions exactly as we've written them. After all, the most convincing e-mail messages will always come directly from you. Nobody knows better than you how to approach your customers, and your audience is already familiar with your 'voice' or style.
However, don't get carried away with style. E-mail Marketing is business communications. This is no place for cutie e-mails like you send to grandma or to close friends. Colored backgrounds and animated graphics will cause most of your e-mail to be filtered out at e-mail servers and most ISP's won't deliver them.
You will be much better off with using plain text with powerful subject lines and compelling copy in the first few paragraphs. The purpose of an e-mail advertisement is to get the reader to a marketing WebPage or your company website. It is not to sell them on anything but the desire to get more information.
The good news is, you don't have to be born with writing skills to create e-mail that really sells -- it's a skill that anyone can master. Follow the simple tips and tricks we've laid out here, and in just a few minutes, you'll be on your way to success!
1 Why use e-mail to promote programs?
A personal e-mail written to your opt-in list can be a very profitable tool for promoting. Because nobody knows your readers better than you do, you can personally recommend a product in an e-mail you send them, and emphasize the benefits that you already know will be of specific interest to your target market.
Because you've already established your credibility with the people on your list or your subscribers, they'll be more open to your recommendations. They already look forward to hearing from you, because they know you send them useful information that they can trust.
When writing your e-mail, keep the following seven simple steps in mind. We guarantee they'll help you generate e-mail with the highest possible marketing results.
All effective marketing is targeted. If you are going to make more than pocket change from marketing, find a group of people who want the same thing (hopefully a large group) and supply them with the exact product or service they already want. You don't find a product or service first and then try to convince people to buy it. If you do have a product or service now, find out where the people who most want it "Hang out" and address your advertising to that place and to that audience.
If you are building a marketing organization or enrolling people in a program your goal is not to sell people on joining. It is to build a business relationship with people. You're looking for partnerships not customers. You will find out that not everyone you advertise to will be a person you want to be in business with.
2. How to write effective content for e-mail promotions
The key to successful e-mail content is to imagine that you are writing the letter to one person, rather than a large group of customers who are all strangers to you. Writing with a single person in mind will help you avoid writing that's too stiff and formal, and make sure your claims are not overstated.
Your character and your professionalism must be obvious to the reader. The effectiveness and results of your marketing hinges on the reader believing you are more interested in helping them get what they want than you are in making money from them.
This fact is why some free offer or trial use offer works so well in marketing. Look at satellite dishes and cell phones today. Companies and suppliers make millions by giving the product away free to get you on service contracts. Even an inexpensive first purchase works well, Gillette Company for years, almost gave away their razors to get you to buy the blades.
3. Follow these seven simple steps to e-mail success:
A. Keep it personal: Write your letter as though you were sending it to one business friend. This is one of the best ways to guarantee that you avoid any exaggeration or hype that will scare away interested potential customers.
B. Tell them "Why": If you believe that you're recommending a good product that your reader will benefit from, tell them. Be specific about why you think it's such a great product and how they stand to benefit from checking it out. Ask yourself, "What are the benefits to this specific person." Remember, people buy drills to get the hole not because they want a drill.
C. Be honest: If you've had personal experience with the product, then let your customer or subscriber know how you've personally benefited from it. Results speak for themselves. You might use a short testimonial here but your marketing Page or website is the place for details not your e-mail.
D. Be knowledgeable: If you don't have personal experience using the product, familiarize yourself with it by taking a few minutes to read the product information. Think about how it will benefit your customers and subscribers, and express this in your letter.
E. Keep it short: An effective e-mail shouldn't be any more than a few paragraphs. Remember that your job is to get the reader to click through your link to the product information. Once the visitor is at your marketing page or your web site, they'll look at the more detailed product information and make the decision to purchase or take the action you ask them to take.
F. Keep it simple: Don't fall into the trap of trying to fill your e-mail with big words and complicated sentences to make it sound more 'official'. That kind of language is a surefire way to turn people off. Think about what you want to say in your e-mail and then imagine that you're sitting down with someone and telling them these things in a casual conversation. That's the tone you want to capture.
G. Test it: Before you e-mail the letter to your entire opt-in e-mail list, consider e-mailing it to a test group to gauge the response. If the results aren't what you hoped, you can always go back and 'tweak' your message before you send it out to everyone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Important- If you want to create a custom e-mail, you don't need to
start from scratch. Why not use the ad copy we've already created,
and make changes to suit your audience? We've even written the
subject lines for you, and they have all been carefully tested - so
you know it's going to work - and it will work for your specific target
market with a minimum of tweaking.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. How to write subject lines that get your e-mails opened
Of course, the best e-mail content in the world is useless if you can't get people to open the e-mail in the first place! That's where good subject lines come in.
Think about all of those e-mails you're probably getting on a daily basis with subjects like:
MAKE $75,000 EVERY WEEK GUARANTEED!
EXPLOSIVE STOCK PICK AT $0.45!!!!
Or:
newsletter
THIS IS NOT SPAM!
Or:
Friend - open this up, this is urgent
And:
Good morning, campers
Do you open these e-mails? Probably not. The subject line makes it obvious that the e-mail is spam... that it's from someone you don't know... or it doesn't offer a clear benefit that makes you want to read it.
Now, how many of your legitimate newsletters and e-mails are mistakenly deleted by your subscribers who read your subject lines and assume it must be spam? How many potential sales could you have saved simply by rewriting your subject lines?
Here are four ideas that will help you write stronger subject lines that get your e-mails opened:
A. Give some news: When you write your subject line, you can make an announcement or give news that your readers will want to hear.
For example: My review of a dynamite course
B. Increase their curiosity: Another good approach to subject lines is to make your reader curious about what's in the e-mail.
For example: Here's my secret marketing weapon
C. Emphasize their benefits: You can also write subject lines that emphasize how the reader will benefit from opening your e-mail.
For example: Learn how to increase marketing results
D. Short reading time: Often when cruising through e-mail and deleting the spam a reader will spend a short time looking at something they feel curious about when they feel it won't cost much time.
For example: Two Minute Marketing Tutorial
Remember too, that you'll always be most successful if you write subject lines that state a clear benefit and tell the reader exactly how they're going to save money, save time, make their life easier, etc., by opening and reading your e-mail. If you can state a benefit AND create curiosity, so much the better!
The key when writing subject lines is to emphasize benefits by considering your product or service from your customers' point of view:
How will they benefit from taking the time to read your e-mail?
What will they learn?
Is your product or service going to save them time?
Is it going to save them money?
Is it going to improve their lives in some way?
Write subject lines that emphasize these benefits and you'll dramatically increase the number of subscribers who open and read your e-mail.
Two other key points to remember when writing your subject lines are:
A. Keep it short and sweet: Don't let your subjects run any longer than 60 characters -- and make sure that the most important details are mentioned first so they don't get cut off.
B. If your subscribers can't read your entire subject line because it's too long, chances are they won't open your e-mail.
If possible, personalize it: A subject line like "Bob, here's the info you need..." is going to get a MUCH better response than simply "Here's the info you need" because the recipient assumes you know them -- and is therefore more likely to open the e-mail.
We've proven that personalized e-mail like this can increase the response you receive by as much as 64% so don't take this technique lightly...
5. How to format your e-mail promotions
Okay, so once you've written a solid e-mail and created a winning subject line, it's ready to go, right?
Well, almost. You still need to check the formatting, to make sure it's free of embarrassing errors that will make you look sloppy and unprofessional -- destroying your credibility and ensuring that your letter ends up in your subscribers' trash bins.
Remember that different e-mail programs, like Outlook, Hotmail, and so on will display your e-mail differently. Plus, different people will have their personal program set to read their incoming mail in different fonts, different sizes, different widths, etc.
To ensure that your messages look consistent for as many of your readers as possible, follow these simple formatting tips:
Use a good text editor: As useful as Microsoft Word may be, it is NOT the tool to use when formatting e-mail copy. Word has too many formatting quirks -- "macros" that are embedded into the program that most of as are unable to work around. These can (and often do) result in bad line breaks, weird characters, and formatting errors on the recipient's end. You are far better off using a text editor.
Notepad and Wordpad, which come with Windows and can be found in your Start menu under Programs then click Accessories. EditPlus is an Internet-ready 32-bit text editor, HTML editor and programmers editor for Windows. While it can serve as a good replacement for Notepad, it also offers many powerful features for Web page authors and programmers. EditPlus is a share-ware program You can download and use a free copy. If you like it they ask you to voluntarily pay for it http://www.editplus.com/index.html
Watch your line lengths: Make sure you set your line length at 55 to 65 characters in order to prevent embarrassing line breaks. If your lines are too long, your e-mail could turn out looking like this:
> You might be wondering how anyone could
>let this
> happen. After all, wouldn't they notice
>that their e-mail has been broken up into numerous different
> lines,
>each a different length?
You've probably received e-mail that looks like this before. It's not only hard to read, it's annoying! Most important is unprofessional and you look like an amateur.
People read e-mail scanning from top to bottom. It is a different reading style than a printed page or a page from a book. More like a newspaper column, e-mail should be a narrow, left justified, conversation styled text, in short paragraphs.
Use hard carriage returns: Some older e-mail clients don't actually have "word wrap," so to avoid having your e-mail appear as one long line of text that readers will need to use the horizontal scroll bar to read, insert a hard return (by pressing "Enter") at the end of each line (i.e., every 55 to 65 characters).
Use a fixed-width font: When formatting your e-mail, do so in a fixed-width font like Courier that uses an equal amount of space to display each character.
For example:
This is Courier
This is Arial
As you can see, Courier consistently uses the same amount of space to display each character, while Arial varies in width.
This is important because the majority of e-mail clients use fixed-width fonts as their default (the exception being Eudora, which defaults to Arial).
While an e-mail formatted in a fixed-width font looks good when displayed in a font like Arial, an e-mail formatted in a font like Arial looks terrible displayed in a fixed-width font.
By formatting your e-mail in a fixed-width font, you'll ensure that it looks good no matter what font your reader's e-mail client defaults to.
Check spelling and proofread everything: Everyone makes mistakes now and then, but there is absolutely no excuse for the blatant errors you routinely see made in many e-mail promotions. Remember that spelling mistakes and poor grammar make you look unprofessional and damage your credibility.
So before clicking "Send," take that extra minute to proofread your work and have a couple of other people read it. You may save yourself some embarrassment... and prevent lost orders!
Keep paragraphs short: By keeping your paragraphs three to four lines in length, you ensure that your e-mail is easy to read. The more white space you use, the better. Long, never-ending sentences that run on for 8 lines get very difficult to read, causing readers to become frustrated and delete your e-mail.
Test, test, test: Before sending your e-mail to your entire list, take an extra 15 minutes to test how it looks in a variety of e-mail clients such as:
Eudora -- free versions at http://www.eudora.com
Outlook -- paid version at http://www.microsoft.com
Outlook Express -- free version at http://www.microsoft.com
Check your promotions in a couple of web-based e-mail clients such as:
Hotmail -- free account at http://www.hotmail.com
Yahoo! -- free account at http://mail.yahoo.com
By setting up these different "test accounts," you'll give yourself the opportunity you need to fix any potential problems, and guarantee that all of your subscribers receive the same professional looking e-mail.
6. Tools for managing your e-mail campaigns
Depending on the size of your opt-in list, you may want to consider upgrading your e-mail tools. E-mail programs like Eudora and Outlook are great for sending e-mail campaigns to small groups of 200 to 1000 people, but once you start to grow your opt-in list (which you need to do if you're going to be a really successful marketer), you need to consider more sophisticated e-mail management software.
A good e-mail management tool should be able to manage all of your contacts' information, send e-mails to your entire list with the click of a button, they should automatically handle your "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" requests, automatically deliver your electronic information products, minimize and manage "bounce backs," and give you the ability to automatically follow up with customers via auto-responder any time you want.
There are several good Auto-responder services on the market today that range from $10 to $30 per month. You are much better off to rent a service as you start marketing than to buy a server, pay for hosting and purchase your own auto-responder software.
There are also RSS feeds and other systems you can use however, they are not as flexible as auto-responders are and they require your readers to download software to receive them.
7 Final Strategies
Only talk about one deal per e-mail. Remember what we said about professionalism and character in Item 2 above? "The effectiveness and results of your marketing hinges on the reader believing you are more interested in helping them get what they want than you are in making money from them."
Advertising several offers at the same time is a carryover tactic from the "mail order" business. The thought was, if people aren't interested in one thing they may buy another. That doesn't work with e-mail you appear to be a vulture waiting for an open wallet not someone trying to help people solve problems with your offer. Sending to your list too often or telling them about all your deals shouts so loud readers see greed not potential business relationships.
A professionally written and formatted e-mail with a catchy subject line makes you look like a credible business owner who takes what you do very seriously. It invites readers to examine your e-mail... check out your offer... and seriously consider making a purchase based on your recommendations.
~ Master E-mail Checklist ~
Check off each one for best results prior to sending your next e-mail to your marketing list.
1. Check to make sure your sending server is not black-listed.
2. Are you complying with all the Can Spam requirements?
3. Is your e-mail 'from address' correct and does it contain your name?
4. Do you have an unsubscribe link that works?
5. Have you removed unsubscribe requests that didn't use the automatic remove link?
6. Is your e-mail targeted to the right market segment or subscriber database?
7. Do you have enough time to promote what you are telling your list about?
8. Is your reason is for writing clear?
9. Do your subscribers have a sufficient relationship with you before you make this offer?
10. Is the tone of your e-mail consistent with your personality?
11. Does your subject line make you want to open the e-mail NOW?
12. Do you use Hello instead of Hi or Dear or other salutation? Remember, you may not have a first name for everyone in your database.
13. Does your e-mail pass the 'who cares test?
14. Does the copy in your e-mail pass the filter test?
15. Does your e-mail have personal flair or is it formal and boring?
16. Are the customer benefits clear or does your offer look like a money grab.
17. Do you have a smooth compelling progression from the first to last paragraph?
18. Is the length e-mail short or are you trying to send a marketing page?
19. Do you have a single purpose for the e-mail or do you look like a marketing offer junkie?
20. Did your e-mail get delivered in your 'test mailing' to your test addresses?
21. Did e-mail look OK when your test arrived? Is it 50 characters wide?
22. Did you use short sentences?
23. Did you avoid using several exclamation points or a smiley?
24. Have you clearly asked for your reader to take action on your single purpose?
25. Are your links live?
26. Do any opt in forms you may be using work?
27. Have you included your signature file?

Most people who respond will be looking for a job not an opportunity. There is a big difference.
Remember, we want to attract those who either want out of the rat race or looking to supplement their incomes. This is where the marriage is made, and a good one at that.
I used to have some software that would send out "press releases," and it did ok until the newspapers, mags, online mags, and etc. began to see it as spam. ...no matter how well the "news copy" was.

Deagan Smith has a great little book on the subject called internet mlm secrets that touches on that subject. i'm a little biased though as I am a member of the company that he recommends.
The key is target marketing. I would not advertise at the unemployment office. Get biz opp leads online and offline.

I pulled this article off the monthly Trafficology newsletter awhile ago and saved it. Thought this would be a good place to share it.
Hope someone finds it useful.
God Bless,

==================
Register Your Site With Reference Publications
There are thousands of Reference Publications that the public relies on to find businesses, products and services. While some are very general, others target very tight niches. When you find the reference guides for your niche, you have also located a nearly limitless supply of Targeted Web Traffic.
A few reference publications are:
- 100 Top Internet Job Sites
- 300 Incredible Things for Travelers on the Internet
- The Book Lover's Guide to the Internet
- The Career Directory
- Collector's Guide to Buying, Selling and Trading on the Internet
- Directory of Medical and Behavioral Health Care Website
- Free Stuff for Stitches on the Internet
- Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages
- Internet Directory for Dummies
- The Internet Kids & Family Yellow Pages
- Internet Outdoor Family Fun Yellow Pages
- Internet Resources and Services for International Business: A Global Guide
- The Official America Online Yellow Pages
- New Rider's Official WWW Yellow Pages
- Northern California Business Directory
- The Online Broker and Trading Directory
- Web-Based Training Cookbook
A key to getting listed in reference guides is making sure your topic is relevant to their publication. Most editors will add your listing if there is a good match and some will even include a description of your site.
Also, don't forget that many trade magazines periodically publish a special issue reviewing relevant websites. An article reviewing your site is a good source of free publicity that will drive traffic to your site for many years to come. You can look for magazines that cover your niche by doing a search at Amazon.com for magazines or by visiting the Oxford Communication's Media Finder.
The Oxford Communication's Media Finder
http://www.mediafinder.com/
Now, to get listed in the reference publications you will need to find the publisher and contact the editor of that particular publication. You should be able to find this information from the publisher listing information at Amazon.com, if the publication has a website their contact information is usually listed there or you can just visit your local bookstore and view the inside cover for contact information.
One other way you can locate the contact information is by going to http://www.isbn.org. There the you will find the official listing for the publisher and editor of each reference guide or magazine
Remember, the more closely a publication matches your niche, the more likely their readers will visit your site…but don't forget to include yourself in the general publications as well.
And one last note…. If you can get the publication to include your link on their site readers will only be 1-click away from seeing your offer.

I'm concerned about the same problem. Anyone got any answers? You can only register so many domain names, and you certainly want to be able to use your unique name if it's descriptive and conveys an appealing idea.

Hi Virgil,
There is plenty of tracking software available that you can use directly from each of your sites. This will maintain your descriptive domain names yet allow you to find out which of your ads are generating clicktroughs and where your visitors are going to (you could use tracking software for internal links that go to other websites).

Yes, more specifically you can use something like "1shoppingcart dot com" to do everything you describe and more. ALOT more than just shopping carts LOL. I've used them before and they're nothing short of excellent and pretty cheap too. Good luck!

Lots of good ideas. Here's couple more low-cost ideas:
1. Use a magnetic sign on your vehicle with your business, website, etc.
2. Enclose a business card in all of your outgoing mail; especially in envelope with pre-paid postage.
3. Advertise on community bulletin boards located in many stores.
4. If you live in an area that gets hot in the summer, put your website or business on your vehicle's sunshade that fits on the inside of your windshield.
5. Fasten your business cards on magnets for your customer's refrigerators.
Not much, but I hope they help
