It's natural to be unsure of yourself especially when your new to the industry.  And it's okay to make mistakes.  We all have.  What's important - Learn from those mistakes.

If you don't have success stories, yet.  Use your mentors or your uplines.  Your writing your story and we all have to start somewhere.

I also believe that passion is a huge component.  If you are passionate about your business, stay focused and stay committed to yourself and your goals.

Hi Iwillard, thanks. Funny that you should mention about using mentor's success because that is in my plans for promoting my biz in Singapore. My mentor started internet marketing just a few years ago and he is already an international speaker so I'm going to use his "power" to draw the crowd haha.

Cheers

Great article, Micheal!

Every successful student has a mentor to guide them to success, so it is also important to find a mentor whom you can trust, and look up to for guidance and inspiration.

Just like this saying: If you want to be the best, then you have to learn from the best.

To the top,

Wyatt

I wanted to add a bit to some of the comments that have been made.

Yes, network marketing can be difficult.  Starting any business or beginning a sales career can be just as difficult.

We tend to focus on the negatives, such as the attrition rate or the low number of people that end up making a lot of money at it.

In my sales career, I hired and trained hundreds of salespeople and sales wannabes.  Most of them did not make any money, but some went on to become six-figure earners.  You have to focus on those that want to build their business and not let yourself get bogged down with trying to do for others that which they are unwilling to do for themselves.

Just as Tony Rush said earlier, network marketing (as well as sales) is easy if you just do the things that create income.  People get so hung up on trying to find the "easy way" that they do not do that which produces income, then they want to blame the system or the company or the trainer or their upline or the government or somebody.

For most of us, just doing some form of traffic generation to our websites will not build our business.   The person that is willing to get on the phone and call as many prospects is necessary to generate interest is the one that will get ahead.  Most people would rather spend a month looking for shortcuts than spend an hour on the phone.

Just my thoughts.

Hi Darrell,

Great post.  However, I believe that your phone idea only works if you are calling leads that you have purchased, or that you know are interested in what you are offering.  I would never use a method on others that I find annoying, such as cold calling.  For instance, I detest telemarketers and others who just assume that I will be interested in what they have to offer.  I would also be offended by a network marketer just calling me out of the blue.  Too many people in this business believe that everyone is a prospect.  That is just not true.  I believe that cold calling and other offensive methods are partly responsible for the bad rap this business has had in the past.

Great article with powerful tips.

One thing. People are also attracted to you for the value of knowledge and information that you can provide to them as well as them knowing that you can benefit their future.

People do not join your organization for the products or the compensation plan, they join because of you and how you can assist them reach their goals.

I'm raising this 1 back to the top so more will "read and heed" the message.  This is especially for the newer members of our Forum and the MLM industry in general.

I can't believe i missed this thread. I've been Hangin Out in this forum for a couple of months now, Geez! To me the single greatest word spoken in all of the posts above mine, is the word, Belief! I subscribe to the mantra, "what you believe you can achieve." What do we believe in, in MLM?

1. First and foremost one MUST believe in himself/herself.

2. Their company, product, service - I agree with Michael, no getting around this one.

3. Their Upline, mentor, coach, etc. - You must connect with your upline.

4. Their Industry - MLM is not easy, It's simple, but not easy, but it WORKS, plain and simple (no pun intended).

5. People need what you have to offer, both product and opportunity. You have something that will make their life better! Never forget that.

6. A secure retirement with long term passive income is WORTH working for. For most of us, MLM it the "only" way to acheive that. There is NO PLAN B! (I seem to recall a post written on that one, lol!)

7. You Will encounter difficult times, objections, dry spells where you couldn't sell water to someone dying of thirst in the Desert! It just happens. Like everything else in life, things go in cycles. You will encounter this, Believe it! By believing it, you will be prepared for it, and won't get derailed by it!

There are more, I'm sure, but you get the point. We in MLM have a set of principles and beliefs that drive us, motivate us, keep us on the "Straight and Narrow," if you will. Stick to them, follow them, you will succeed. The only way to fail in this industry, IMHO is to quit. Plug away, do the things you know to do, follow your leaders and mentors, and you will get there. Remember it's a marathon, not a sprint. It's an endurance race. Along the way you will see people fall by the wayside, and some of them will be people you have sponsored. Don't let that discourage you. Focus on the prize, keep moving forward, sometimes even barely crawling, but forward none the less. YOU WILL ARRIVE AND THE JOURNEY WILL HAVE BEEN WORTH IT! I guarantee!

I hope this helps someone

Mitch

Mitch, you are absolutely correct in your 7 points. Other posters have also pointed out some important success principles that I have found valuable.

In my experience, when you are just starting out in MLM, the success stories of your upline is all you have. You could of course use stories from other successful people in the business, but I have found using somebody you know is much more effective.

For example, my daughter has just started building her organization (she is not in my downline or company). Lacking a personal success story, she introduced her propsect to a Director that was running the meeting. The prospect then started asking this Director about building a business and what her experiences have been.

Powerful stuff coming from a person with experience and success. The prospect signed up and has since done well building a customer base.

I believe it's ironic that when we first start we are advised to make contact with our warm market. Yet, if you're in my position, that may not be the best idea. Everybody that knew me knew of my recent financial troubles in a brick and mortar retail business. I knew intuitively my warm market would be very hesitant to get involved with a "business failure."

Some day in the future I will approach my warm market--once I have re-established my credibility.

My personal mantra: Never quit.

I think anyone who is worth their salt has had a business failure of some sort. It's hard to tell if you've really stretched yourself like you should've unless you've found out what NOT to do.

I admire those who have a business failure (whether mlm or traditional) and then jump right back on the horse to continue until successful.

I'm with ya man,

To me, the key to success is having some sort of easily duplicatable system that your downline can use.

I have seen it time and time again where  people initially do well thru their personal charisma and sheer effort, however this is extremely hard to duplicate.  Most people are not natural born salesmen.

So, provide your downline with a template or duplicatable system, train them, let them run with the ball.  Always be there to support them.  If you do those things you will be successful.

Yes. duplication is very important.

In my original MLM effort I went all out on buying leads, publishing a newsletter for my downline, placing new members in my downline (voluntary one-man spillover csampaign). All designed to motivate my downline to take action for themselves. It backfired in a sense. I created dependency.

I realized this when I got an email from one member. I had placed three people directly in his downline over the course of a 30 day period. I then started placing new members under other people. Now in his email he ws unhappy that I had gone two weeks without sending him a new recruit.

His question: What's going on? Is the opportunity done?

I realized at that point that I had created a monster. My entire downline was waiting on me to send them new members--rather than taking action to build their own teams. I stopped directing spillover to my downline, with the result of most of these members withering away.

I now ask my memebrs to build their own business. I'm there for training and motivation, but I won't give them a business.

Wow, rtaylor111!  What a hard lesson to learn.  I think that we can all benefit from your post.  Some new distributors want everything to be done for them, and when that happens, it is expected FOREVERMORE!  I believe that we should all be given the tools, and then learn how to utilize them.  Otherwise, you WILL "create a monster", just as you said.  Great post!

Thanks Ronda. Taking my downline off the "automatic" feed trough was tough. I thought at first that eventually it would pay to build a downline by sacrificing the sign up bonuses and higher commissions and move new people I personally recruited, several layers down in my matrix.

I thought I was building a dynamic team of leaders--but alas, it was more like a static team of followers.

It made me feel good helping others, but like welfare, it did little to motivate people to help  themselves.

Live and learn.

I would like to add one point that seems to be missing from this post... If its in here, I apologize ( I was reading quickly to get through all the comments).

But I think the Number 1 way that "Top Network Marketers" build success... is by recruiting from "within" the industry... that is hitting their target market.

Fact is... your target market for any business... is people who have already exhibited the desire to purchase or do whatever it is you are selling or promoting.  The primary focus of your recruiting for any MLM should be people who have already been involved with previous MLM's... That is the REAL SECRET that the most "heavy hitters" will not tell you about... and the best way to build yourself a large and successful downline.

Recruiting from your warm market (friends, family, and people you've met)... is a  strategy that is doomed to fail. ( How many of them have ever expressed the desire to do network marketing?) Its a crap shoot... when you use this stategy, you set yourself up for failure.

I hope this advice helps many of you out there see the light... It sure has turned my business around... I went from 4 people in my downline to over 700 in just a few months after implementing this advice.

This information is and should be common knowledge... but many people overlook it. The debate comes from "how do you find these people?" and "how do I contact them?"... Those are topics to be discussed eleswhere I suppose... I would love to help those out there that need direction here.. I have found an excellent  resource... maybe I'll post it in the Ad Forum...

Well... I think I have blabbed on long enough...

I agree with your warm market comment. I have actually never had much luck in this area, other than some consistent small product sells to family and friends.

When it comes ot building a business, in my opinion, you have ot go outside your warm market. At my website I talk about "getting outside your comfort zone." This, to me, is where the big bucks hide.

Like you mentioned, finding a way to access this market is the tough part. Many online MLM companies now offer paid lead and recruit services--which can become very expensive. The pay-per-click route is also cost prohbitive.

So, what to do? The one area I have had decent luck with is in blogging. I use free resources like blogger and squidoo. I have yet to use some of the social networking sites, but plan to.

I have about 15 pages over at Squidoo and I've learned some interesting things about getting traffic to that site. Earlier I just built pages (lens) on subjects I thought were hot and felt I could write a few articles on. Zero traffic in over 1 year of having the pages active.

I have recently started building pages using keywords identified by Wordtracker as having at least 500 searches per month. I then go to a search engine like MSN.com and type in that keyword with quotes to find the true supply of sites using that keyword. If looks like there are less than say 500,000 sites promoting that keyword, I give it a try and build a Squidoo page focused on that keyword.

I also use Wordtracker to find the "long-tail" keywords under my main keyword. I add those words as additional tags to my Squidoo site. Immediately after building my Squidoo lens I click on the Stumble Upon and Digg It links, in order to get my new page on the search engine radar. Seems to work.

Squidoo, Digg, and Stumble all have high page rank and links at those sites score well with the search engines.

Give Squidoo a try when you get a chance.

Are you wondering what it takes to be a successful network marketer? I invite you to consider these seven habits of successful network marketers.

Have goals. Make sure your goals are written down, specific and have a deadline.

Have a long term vision. Write down your vision and share it with your team and potential team members.

Take daily consistent action. Commit to certain actions and do them every single day.

Be a leader and encourage and coach your team to success.

Have a mentor and learn and grow from him or her. Take advantage of all learning opportunities and apply what you learn to your business.

Focus on giving the best service you can.

Work on your self development and grow yourself.
