However, many people join MLM type opportunities without really knowing what they are getting themselves in to. This is probably one of the biggest reasons for the fact that some people have very low thoughts about this type of business.

MLM works if you do it right. Period. That said, here are seven really poor reasons for enrolling in a network marketing opportunity:

1) Earning "easy money"

2) Expecting that "spill over" will do all the work

3) Thinking that a product is so great it will sell itself

4) Doing an old friend a favor

5) Earning a lot of money in a short period of time

6) Big name X endorses this program

7) Thinking this will be a free business to run

Treat your business like a business, and you will be okay.

I like #2. It is amazing how many people will sponsor someone by telling them they do not have to personally sponsor and the person joining believes them. If you join an mlm program expect to sponsor and to teach people to sponsor. Without that you will never have a growing downline.

i like #3 .  Nothing has legs and gets up and sells itself! :P  You have to talk with people to sell your product.

I like your 7 reasons

I can personally testify how # 6 can work against you.

Don't misunderstand me. It doesn't have to but if you use it as a major factor for building your business the odds are that it will somewhere down the road.

I agree with all 7.

If you want to make money in mlm, expect to find something you can market and believe in and buckle does and goto work.  It works but ONLY when you work, and if you are willing to put in the time and effort, over time you can do build a solid business.

NEVER believe ANYONE will or can do it for you.   You are in charge.

Diane;)

#1 & #5 I think are the biggest culprits!

Many of the ads that you see are geared towards making people believe that!

Number 1 is a good point. It definitely is not easy money.

Number 2 is extremely rampant in binary and matrix plans. I've been to few of these and because I"m trained I know better. However, to a person who's new or green to network marketing, they get the idea that the business will build itself.

Yeah, I think people's disillusionment with MLM comes from the way that a lot of the programs are marketed.

"How A 26-Year-Old College Dropout Made $38,782 In Just 3 Months...WITHOUT Going Anywhere NEAR A Telephone!"

People sign up expecting to get the same results, and then reality sets in...

It's like if your uncle comes and tells you about this restaurant, "Boy! I just got back from the BEST Italian dinner I've ever had in my life! You've GOTTA come see this place! The marinara sauce alone'll knock you right outta your chair!"

So you get all excited and your stomach starts growling, and he brings you to the restaurant, then goes, "Oh, and by the way...you have to cook all the food yourself."

I definitely agree. I grew up in an area where the founders of one of the largest MLM company's started. I signed up under one of there first distributors, who showed me a very large check. And yes I was disillusioned.:X

If you sign up with a nutritional MLM, its best to get in very early.  Most of those companies have a 2 year lifespan as far as building base because the products eventually find their way into Wal-Marts and grocery stores.  So its best to get in early and that way you can establish a customer base that will continue to buy from you as the number of new customers will diminish.

Hello,

I like this post, because I can relate to the reason as a newbie and totally ignorant about MLM. I do answer yes to at least half of those claims, but I have one strong goal for getting into this MLM. I am a struglling artist and I have the occasional down time when I am not working or making enough money, and I see MLM is to invest in building a longterm residual income. If it's possible for so many people from all walks of life, then I don't want to miss out on it. I want to put in my best efforts to make it happen for me, and that hopefully in a number of months,  I will succeed and have some residual income so I can have the financial freedom to work at creative jobs when I want and not have to do jobs that I do like to supply my income.

May Success Smile On Us All Everyday!:D

A lot of new people to network marketing fall into those "yellow brick road promises" in which all you have to do is walk down a street and you'll enter in Emerald City where the streets are paved with goal which is simply not true.

There are 5 things you want to consider in joining a network marketing business

1.  Is the product something people can use (Is it viable)???

2.  Is the company regulated??  (Is it Legit)??

3.  Is the company established???

4.  Can you make some real money (No points, or play-money or etc)???

5.  Is the recruiter experienced to show you the ropes??

In my opinion the #1 reason to join a company is if you or anyone will buy or use your product if it was not a mlm or they were not in the business. #2 Is the product one that is used by almost everyone over and over again. #3 is the company one you can trust..do your due diligence.

One thing I forgot to mention.

There's no such thing really as a poor MLM.  People generally buy or purchase services based on you as the person.

I was in Amway in the late 90's and I was successful simply because I was consistant and went beyond regular and ordinary service.

Its the personality that has more to do with closing a deal rather than a product.

I tried  before and failed because of most of the above. One thing that I am in the process of learning from successful people is that the important focus be on helping people get what they want instead of focusing on the money. I am working on this area of my life because I believe it is the biggest key to success. I believe to be successful I need to study successful peolple and learn to do what they do. To really care about the other person and communicate that care is my goal now. I also realize that this is not "Instant Cash" and that I have to put in effort and time; it takes commitment. After all this is MY business.

Northendnorman, you are right-on!  The more you care about helping others get what they want, the more apt you are to get what you want.

I became excited about an MLM opportunity 30 years ago, and the idea of helping others reach their goals was what turned me on!  In the first 3 years we helped 3 couples build a sizable business and earn Free trips to places they'd never been to.  That was so neat!

Today I'm still at it, earning trips and an income of $4000/month and still loving the chance to show others how easily they can do it, too.

#2, recently a gentlemam called me... spoke in a flat NLP

monotone and attempted to recruit me into his

MyWorldPlus organization.

He said he was spending $25k on email marketing and

that I would benefit from spillover.

I never promoted it but team he is building for me

seems to have fizzled.

If anybody ever calls you saying they have big money for

advertising and they are going to spend it building your

organization... they are probably broke and lying to

you.
