Hype And Crap In MLM Advertising
I read everything. Literally, every time I am surfing the web.....I look at ad copy, squeeze pages, sales letter pages, etc. Plus, I read all of the "printed" MLM publications and it shocks me to see some of the B.S. ads people run to attract people to respond.
My question is this: Why not simply get CREATIVE, think OUTSIDE of the box a bit and simply write a GOOD QUALITY ad, rather than make yourself look stupid?
I know it is critically important in advertising to set yourself apart from the competition and to make your opportunity and/or product or service, but man...what's with all the crap out there. I mean...the companies being advertised might be good companies, but HOW they are being marketed just makes the entire profession look bad.
Here's a few examples (leaving out the actual names of people doing this):
* Joe and Bob will make you rich!
* Dressing up like a clown in your ad.
* Did you miss the Noni, Xango, Eniva, Vemma, Via Viente, Mona Vie Explosions?
* Extremely Fast Cash!
* Entire Downlines Are Already Moving Over!
* Serious Cash, Not MLM, No Selling!
* We LITERALLY do ALL the work FOR you!
I could give my reasons why each of these techniques, actual headlines and subheads used in ads pretty much stink, but you're all smart enough not do to this..... aren't you?
We are in a business that requires work, commitment and skill development. Promoting our profession as something that will make you rich and put super fast money in your pocket without doing any work is simply a lie.
I love this too. Guerilla baby! I see people ALL the time who use my name for Pay-per-Click ads. Smart for sure! But, just do me and you a favor IF you are one of those who use my name or someone else's name to attract leads to your site using Google Ad Words or other PPC avenues.
Don't say:

Todd Falcone's Favorite Program
People do this all the time with my name and others. I don't have a problem with this very geurilla and smart marketing tactic, but don't LIE!
Seriously...if you want to know what I mean, go do a Google search on Todd Falcone and see what people are doing. Do a Google search for ANYONE who has made a name for themselves in this profession and you will see the same thing.
Yes...market.
But....pllleaaasseeee market yourself in a respectable way.

Here's my editorial follow-up:
I agree with Todd....all the hype yada yada mumbo jumbo simply turns my stomach. Get real!!!! The really sad part is that people fall for it unfortunately.....joining these things, and then having their hopes shattered when they don't work out. Then, to top it off they say that they were scammed and label all MLM as such. Another voice labeling all of us for what a few have done. Guilt by association.....what a shame.
There are awesome opportunities out there, but these get-rich-in-30-days-for-doing-nothing scams....and how they are shamelessly marketed.... are making it tough for the real wealth building opportunities.
Network marketing is a people-helping-people business. That has and never will change. But it's also a business people!!! Meaning it takes time and effort.......no sitting on the couch i your undies, eating cheetos, and watching Ophrah! You MUST tell people the truth that it takes education, work, time, and perserverance to succeed. Those who do.....WILL build the true successful organizations.

I have tremendous respect for Todd as well and his comments are right on!
What kind of people would someone attract with those kinds of ads?
Generally lazy ones with a get rich quick mentality.
Not people we want in our downline anyway!

Great thread!
I have read it over many times especially now after seeing so many scams and get rich quick for doing nothing schemes out there. These schemes are DOMINATING some forums out there. It is driving me insane. So I come here for fresh air! 
Any legitimate business takes WORK!

Thanks for reminding me of this forum Deb. I havent been here for a long time and had lost the link. So glad to be back.
One of the problems with hype advertising is that it's not just done with scams.
I certainly am with a legitimate company, but I could post ads claiming "I will do all your work" or "I will place people under you" etc...... but if I did I would deserve exactly what I would get!
Those ads don't attract leaders or self starters who understand there is work involved and are willing to do it.

If you have a decent company with superior products there is no reason to hype!
You can build a fortune on credibilty. Too bad more networkers dont "get it"

How true...but unfortunately I suppose that's the way it is because many uplines don't teach their team members very well about establishing credibility and proper marketing.
Many of them just provide their downlines with very basic information such as the comp plan of the biz opp and start blasting it to everyone they see.
Downlines will want good results ASAP, and hyped up ads can probably bring them some results quickly especially when they don't have any marketing skills to begin with.
That's what my own uplines used to do. Place hype ads in forums and blogs before I eventually found out that they don't work at all, and proceeded to invest in online marketing and copywriting courses to write honest and responsible ads that can still pull in visitors.
Investment in education about building a business is one of the ways to seperate tire-kickers from the real ones.
Unfortunately tire-kickers are still going to make up the majority of the MLM population, and these hyped ups ads are going to stay on for some time.
Which makes it easier for us real ones to differentiate ourselves.

This thread should be bumped to the top. I could care less how many people join an opportunity, if it was based on fake "hype" they'll be gone in a few months anyway.

i remember someone telling me all the hype about a business, and i kept asking "can that be" " are you sure, it sounds to good to be true" then when i finally purchase the product it lacked the basic training besides all the amazing features he was telling me about. even the support told me that what this guy did was off.
