Hey guys! Has anyone here experimented with using press releases to promote your business? A while back, I came across this article featuring internet marketing guru Daniel Levis interviewing Paul Hartunian, the public releations expert. In the article, they discuss some tactics for using press releases to attract leads. I haven't tried it yet, but sounds pretty cool. Let me know what you think...
Here's the article:

Ive done a few and had some good results. It really depends on how well it is written. Press releases actually seem kinda expensive compared to other things out there.

Hello,
I shy away from Press Releases because of the cost involved.
I usually market via articles. This is a free method that tends
to be my favorite way to promote my business. It is powerful
easy, free and is viral marketing at it's best.

Hey All!
I too think the way to do this is Article Marketing.
They generally want way to much to do a simple Press Release. Not much bang for the buck!

I agree with you both I have found that either having articles written (if your too busy to do them yourself) or doing them yourself is a great way to promote your business and push up the organic search enigines. I tend to fire mine round with article robot to get the best coverage.

I tried using a company called PRweb.com. They charged me $200 for the release...and to be honest I really don't know how much traffic it generated for me. The process was a good one to go through, but the jury is out on whether or not it was worth the time and money.
Where could I find more information about article marketing...anyone have any secret favorites they'd like to share?

Yeah, in the interview I posted he actually says you should create the press releases yourself and fax them to relevant media outlets, which is much cheaper than paying someone. Of course, I'm sure there's a learning curve involved with doing it, but what he's saying is you don't neccessarily have to spend money.
I'm planning to try it anyway so maybe I'll post back with results.
As for writing articles, this is what I did.
1. Learn how to write articles. You can Google "how to write an article" or something and find plenty of tutorials. This was easier for me because I already had experience writing (mostly fiction), so I really just had to learn the format. For article marketing, your articles should have valuable content that someone can actually use, but they don't have to be Pulitzer Prize winners. I generally keep the length to about 500-600 words per article.
2. Next, find article directories. Again, Google is your friend here. Some of the major article directories are ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com, findarticles.com. I THINK someone may have posted a list of article directories on this forum awhile back too.
3. Submit your articles. You can do this manually, but there's also software that submits the articles for you. However, you may want to read the article directory terms before submitting, as they sometimes dont allow you to submit articles that you've already published with other directories or elsewhere on the web.
4. Include a link to your website in your profile signature.
5. Submit, submit, submit. The more relevant articles you get out there, the more potential for traffic.
I've definitely gotten trickles of traffic from articles I've written. If people find value in what you've written and you give them a reason to click on your sig link (ie: more info or feebies at your website), they'll click. And also the cool thing is that the articles get picked up and shared, so it has the potential to become viral marketing.
The "downside" is that it takes time to actually research and write the articles. However, if you're willing to invest a little money, you can hire writers to do the writing for you on sites like elance.
Hope that helps!

I made a fortune using press releases to promote my business in 2006 in mid 2007 the search engines changed how they do things and they no longer have press releases ( at least it tougher to get there) as a part of their search results.

There are many great places to submit well written and interesting press releases on the internet today. I don't know that it is any more difficult to submit today than back in 2006 and 2007. May be just a perception. At least it's a way to get your message, links, and websites out there.
After all, it's all about exposure.
