Here's a few questions many MLMers ask .... and worry way too much over IMHO:

"When building your downline in MLM, how do you keep it all organized?"

"How do you make sure you are helping everyone in your downline succeed?"

"Do you just keep it simple and only help those who call for it?"

"Do you keep in touch with every rep you personally sponsored?"

"How can you ensure you keep in touch with your downline, create a teamwork mindset, and help everyone succeed?"

In other words ..... "how do you "lead" your group of people successfully?"

Well....some folks start a website with a team name, and back office.  IMHO that is just too complicated for the average MLMer to make happen.

My short answer...keep it simple.

You can't "do" everything for "everyone".  Trying that will drive you nuts...and isn't a good recipe for a successful business anyway.

Some will...some won't...you can't make them.

But...you can be there for them when they need you.  That should be made clear however you decide to do that.  Have a reputation for having answers...or knowing where they can get them....and being available for that.

Now...this is just me so PLEASE don't take this as the "only" way.

I keep tabs on my group through the back office my company provides.  I know who's selling and who's sponsoring....and who isn't.  Who's "doing" and who's not.  I don't need my own software or website.  Although I do have a blog (Best MLM Resources) ....but it's not specific for my company but for resources in general for anyone in MLM.

My company sends a "welcome" email with a short "to do" list for getting started...and staying engaged with the company available marketing & training resources.  They get this immediately upon registration....automatically.

My company has a monthly newsletter email....and weekly training/info calls....and periodic emails for special news. Goes out to everyone.

My partner sends a short "getting started" training series via email soon after they register.  He knows from the genealogy in our back office who needs one.

I used to have everyone on a weekly info-email via autoresponder with practical tips, insights, ideas, etc....to keep "it" in front of them (pre-loaded with 52 weeks to cover their 1st year) .  My contact info was always included.  I knew to add someone to the system....again from my company provided back office genealogy.

I'd ocassionally blast an email to the group for special news, insights, tips.....using the same autoresponder system.  My partner still does this.

I'd refer them to the company specific discussion board here at Home Based business Forums .... and the Agent BBS in the company back office .... for "group" support.  All in the Family.  ;)

I'd reinforce the company resources (back office and weekly info/training calls) in my weekly info-mail.  So did/does my partner in his Getting Started series for newbies.

Now I accomplish most of the above via the RSS feed from my blog.  While my partner continues the regular news and tips mailings to accomplish what I don't via the blog feed.

That's it.  If someone needs something specific they know to contact me or my partner via phone or email or Forum PM.  We're both available for them (although we do live in different states that actually works out better for our organization).  If they don't....we don't chase them down.

Lead...don't enable.  Big difference.

You lead by "doing" yourself....not doing "for" them.  You can't hold everybody's hand 7/24/365.  They have to stand on their own...."do" on their own....build their own business.  You can only be there when they need you for something specific....and get them the tools/info to "do" when they need them.

If you're doing....you can share the expertise, resources, contacts, etc. you've developed that fit the issues they may bring to you.  If you're not "doing" you have nothing of benefit to share with them....and get them "doing".  This point....is critical.
You can provide that "body of knowledge" one on one when warranted....and via a regular contact like the weekly info-email I mentioned (or whatever frequency you choose that's best for you....maybe monthly).  Some folks even have regular "conference" calls themselves....phone or online (called webinars).  I prefer to use my company calls to do regular scheduled group stuff for me.....more efficient and effective.  Just put out the schedule (or link to it) in our monthly heads-up and/or remind via email blast so those who are "doers" will take advantage of it.

That's it.  Simple, efficient, effective...for me.  You should decide what will do the same for you.

On another note...don't put the cart before the horse.

If you're caught up in this analytical mode of "what to do" with a large organization when you have one....you'll never get there.  You'll spend so much time on studying and planning and preparing....and nothing on actually building that organization.  You'll freeze any movement toward actually business building.  Common pitfall too many succumb to.  Perpetual learning and planning....and no actual "doing".

So my advice is this.......get to work and stop worrying so much.  Keep it simple....and have some fun.  As your organization grows you will to.  Your feet will find the right path on their own....as long as you keep your feet moving.

God Bless,
Michael

Michael, great information about 'not worrying' and 'keeping it simple' on one's journey toward building their team. I believe you really hit the nail on the head with the above two paragraphs about leading by example and leading with action.

I have seen far too many marketers get stuck in the analysis of what to do before they have done. I believe we all learn better by doing and we will learn how to build and grow a team over time.

If there was one tool every marketer should have, I would say it is a contact management program. Not just any software or web-based program, but one that is designed for sales people. Such a system for managing contacts and leads will help the marketer stay on top of the actions that help them accelerate their growth and efficiently work with their team.

Very well stated.  Provide your new partner the tools and resources they need to be successful.  If those are at their finger tips along with you being available to call upon, it's up to them to take action.

Building a strong, profitable, cash producing downline takes time and effort. It demands leadership and communication. But the rewards are great.

Thanks for posting. :-)

I always send a welcome email to new affiliates and invite them to join my team which has a duplication system for them to use with easy steps to follow and get started quickly.

In my welcome email I also provide a link to a blog on my website where I provide marketing information and steps to take.

As far as working with everybody one on one, I only do it with people who I think are going to actually take action and show interest.

You can't force someone to take action, you can only present them the plan and it's really up to them to do it and follow through. I would rather waste my energy on someone who is going to help leverage my income and not force someone to do something only to complain and quit or do nothing.

I also promotr my own teams links myself becuase my company pays 100 percent commissions on five levels down.

Excellent post.  New members need guidance and those who just sign someone up and then move on are missing a very vital key to success.

Well said. Provide with your new members with the tools, resources, information, knowledge & your 24/7 support and it is up to them to absorb everything and put it into action and come to you when they do require assistance.

The more your business expands, the harder it is to try and provide help to ALL your students with one on one coaching, you need to design a system in place where you can funnel your members through from point A to point Z and by point Z they will be able to duplicate your system for their business and experience the same level of achievement.

This is a great post and good points made. The one point I like is the fact that you have to lead by action. The problem is, you have to look for the company its self to lead by action as well. My point is if your company training isnt great, then you yourself will end up making the costly mistakes. That's  why new mlm people have consider mlm a spam and or drop off your downline. Plus more then likely is why we get bad views across the board. Just type mlm in your search you'll find the first 20 links talking about how bad mlm is before you get to the company that really works.  And if I can add to this post I would say theres five things everyone should consider before joining a  mlm company.

1. Is the COMPANY soild and finacially stable?
2. Are the PRODUCTS something people want and or need?
3. Is  the COMPENSTATION plan generous?
4. Does the company have a TRAINING PROGRAM and can GUARANTEE you success?
5. Is the TIMING right for a opportunity?

So with that said take it into consideration. and dont blame the company or mlm for your mistakes.

To really "over" simplify things ..... just look at at it this way:

"Don't worry" and "keep it simple" ..... "lead by example" and "lead with action".

God Bless,
Michael
