I absolutely agree with what you're saying.
People often forget that no matter how great a company is, it will not be great for long without a great product or service and people actually using it.
Comp plans are meaningless if there's no sales. 100% of zero sales = 0
Any ideas on recruiting and retaining customers?

In the past before the Internet age, success in network marketing was based on
the volume of products moved. Even as I write, it is still the norm. However,
there is a new way of doing network marketing that does not require you sell
anything.
Most people do not join MLM simply because of the fear of selling. If that
describes you, I'm saying that you don’t have to sell anything once you understand how to position yourself and deliver value in the eyes of your prospects.
In the age of the Internet, you can easily do this and achieve great success if
you follow the simple but proven marketing strategies that my system teaches
you.
For the reserved person, making money with network marketing has become the
best business model because it allows such one freedom of working from the
comforts of home and making serious income day in and day out without talking with anyone.
You can actually position yourself as a leader by learning marketing and actually
giving away great deal of information to all your interested recruits. This way,
you will help them with information that will help them to make a good income like yourself.
When you learn how to effectively sell yourself as a consultant, your are
marketing your brand and creating credibility along the line. Once this is
established, people will join your team of whatever business you may be in simply
because you have proved yourself worthy.

What about making two friends a day. I make an effort to meet two new people a day. This can be done offline or online. If you prefer online meet people at MySpace, Yuwie, on a networking forum....there's so many different options.
These new found relationships can lead to customers or partners over time. Remain consisten and focused.

Does your MLM company have competitively priced retailable products?
One of the main criteria for me in choosing a MLM company is a company that has a product line that can actually be retailed and for a decent profit. A company where one could earn a full time income on retailing alone if they choose to do so is a GREAT feature of any pay plan!
Believe it or not there ARE "networkers" out there that prefer to SELL and make FAST upfront money over constantly having to recruit and lead a team. Not everyone is a "sponser monster".
There are many benefits to retailing. Here are just a few.
1. Retailing puts you into an immediate cash flow.
This is great for the new person who can recoup their product costs and other business expenses right away! The fact is most new people who join a mlm program do NOT sponser any more than three people when they first join. By retailing they can break even right away AND get into profit! If they can make money right away they are less likely to quit!
2.Retailing can earn you a FULL TIME income while building your "wealth" through sponsering and team building.
3. Retailing is legal and ethical and actually required. It keeps the companies off the radar screen from the authorities. They REALLY frown on "recruiting only" opportunities! 
4. Retailing is a SIMPLE business transaction. It is done every day on a massive scale. Billions and billions of products are sold every day worldwide via RETAIL. Retailing is EASY to show to new business partners! Its simple math. No complicated pay plan explanation required. Dont be afraid of retailing!
5. Retailing moves MAJOR volume fast in your organization and what is it that we are paid on anyway? Its VOLUME. The more product that gets moved the BIGGER your check! The volume created from retailing also helps you move up higher in rank faster in your pay plan. Again not everyone is a sponser monster,actually most are not but "anyone" can retail if they have a high quality retailable product at a competitive price.
In a nutshell dont always look for the sponser monsters. Find yourself a few good retailers to add to your team too. You will be glad you did!

I always push sales ahead of recruiting. In my experience, a handful of retailers, beats a boatload of recruiters with no sales.

To make money in this industry you break it down to three things.
You first need to be commited, consistent, and have capital to make ANY business run.
You need to market a high ticket item with high profit margin, that has value to the end user. Marketing small nickel and dime items is time consuming and not worth the time for me.
You then need to master marketing and lead generation, prospecting,and closing. Dont buy leads and call them , the only ones getting rich that way is the lead brokers. Create organic leads whether it is through online, offline, guerilla, JV's, or voice blasting. Voice blasting is my favorite as the cost is low to generate, and the ROI on these organic leads is amazing. Good Luck to all.

A very wise friend once said to me. Nothing happens in this world until something is sold. Simple, yet profound. Free enterprise is built upon this premise. MLM is nothing more than a business model for moving product from the manufacturer to the consumer and in the process empowering independent distributors to become business owners and allowing them to reap 100% of the benefit from their effort. This is why it amazes me when intelligent people bash MLM and accuse it of being a pyramid scheme. They could not be further from the truth.
If you want to see a pyramid, there are two places to look, Egypt, and the corporate world. In Egypt one will see non monetized pyramids which are really crypts that are full of death and decay. In the corprorate world, one can see much the same, actually. At the top are one or two men or women who rake in 90% of all the money coming from the organization. At the bottom you have 90% of the people in the organization who are barely scratching by. In the middle, well, you get the picture.
MLM is sales. Sales makes the world go around, funds the economy, builds schools, churches, businesses, factories, roads, etc. etc. etc. Sales is the lifeblood of the free enterprise system. MLM is the answer for the average joe who wants more from life than the day to day grind at their j.o.b.
