So we’ve all been told this many times. We have to have discipline to build a home based business.
Most of us know this. We have to have to be disciplined enough to learn the skills, to take the actions, and to be consistent.
But what about the OTHER side of discipline?
The discipline not to OVER do it.
For all of us who are MLM/home business addicts.
For those of us who are consistently up working our business at 2am. Or feeding our families more take out than real food because we are working.
You know who you are.
So for those of you, who have PASSED the “addiction” stage of your home business career I ask you….How do you keep the discipline but have a balance?
Please share your tips with us addicts. Our families and friends will thank you greatly for your insights.

I can understand where you are coming from. We seem to convince ourselves that success will arrive if we work harder and longer. I have been there but I finally took back control of my time (and energy).
I have been selling on the internet for about four years but I have only been involved in affiliate marketing for a few months and I have not seen the results that I want. When the results for my affiliate marketing did not come, I felt that I needed to work harder but I was wrong.
Try these ideas and see if they help. Remember, as you mentioned, you have to be disciplined enough to say "no" as well as "yes".
1) Determine your priorties - for me family first; business second
2) Set your goals - needs of my family first; goals of my business second
3) Develop a plan
When I saw my time and energy being consumed by my business efforts I realized my family was taking a back seat so I rearranged everything. I set goals for each day and develop a plan to reach those goals BUT I have learned how to stop when I don't get finished. It will still be there tomorrow.
I would rather have enough time and energy and the end of the day for those who are important to me. Don't work harder and longer. Work smarter. Businesses come and go but family, friends, etc are forever.
Hope this helps,
John

John thanks so much for your insights.
You are absolutely right. A conversation with my husband actually sparked my desire to write this post in the first place.
I stay at home with my kids and in the last couple of months since I've really been marketing my website, my children have seen mommy on the computer a lot more.
Yesterday,I was complaining about how tired I was and my husband so clearly pointed out - "Keya, you don't sleep".
I realized he was right. I wait for everyone to go to bed at 10pm, go work until 1 or 2 and then get up at 6:30 before I get my kids up at 7am.
I have to set my priorities and give my self "time limits" like you said. The work will be there tomorrow.
Thanks again

Hello!
You are most welcome. I have found that so many times my wife helps me to develop a new perspective about situations.

Hi Keya,
Do you have a "day job" also? So you do your day job and then come home to do your Internet Business?
I am fortunate enough to be able to work from home full time, and then have the evenings with my family, although my work often goes into the evening. I am similar to you in some ways because I find it hard to stop.
I usually say, 'just one more email', or I will just post one more article or blog post and before I know it another hour has gone by!
I definitely agree with John about working smarter. This is the key to being efficient.
For your business:
Write your goals down
Have a to do list which you stick to
Have Action only days
Have research only days
You may find that you can get more work done in the evenings by knowing exactly what you need to achieve than aimlessly doing this, that and the other.
Write your 3 main tasks for the day/ evening down that you want to achieve and dont do anything else until you have finished them. Once you are done you will feel much better and then you can go and have an early night to get some sleep.
I used to work all day and night and not actually achieve much. As soon as I sat down, focused and worked out what I needed to do, I started being more productive.
Its difficult because the main reason we work so hard is to benefit our families, but we end up neglecting the very same people we are trying to help, and work starts to become an addiction.
Hope that helps
Gavin

Hi Gavin -
I like your tip on "Action Only days" and "Research Only days". I have never broken it down that specifically, but it is a great idea.

I understand your point expressed.
Personally I don't see the reason why to over do it but I guess it takes time until one realizes that all this extra hours on the home business doesn't make your success come any faster.
You can either work hard or work smart. There are marketing strategies available to you where they do the work for you and all you need to do is maintain your business.
An example of this would be Co-Registration, there is many more but I'm sure you get the general idea on how to lighten the load and make your life as online entrepreneur a lot easier.

This is a most relevant topic for me right now. I am working on a major project that involves putting up a new web site that will have significant content and some pretty aggressive marketing. I work on this mostly in the evenings, and I have to balance my time between family (I have two young children, ages 5 and 10) and this project.
I agree with John's approach - I put family first, business second. That is often hard to do, and frequently involves staying up later than desireable after everyone else is in bed. I could easily work on this for 12-14 hours a day right now, but to preserve sanity and keep things in balance, I schedule 3 hours each evening. When I am done, I am done and take up where I left off the next day.

Working just 1-2 hours per day can develop you into a 6 figure plus income earner in 2 years time.
There's no reason to sacrifice family life in this industry.
We have to remember we chose Home Based Businesses because we wanted more Time Freedom to Live Our Lives.
