My college basketball coach had a sign up in the lockeroom that read:
"A PERSON SHOW'S WHO THEY ARE....BY WHAT THEY DO....WITH WHAT THEY HAVE"
It's been quite a few years but I've always remembered those words.
They've served me well many times. Tough games as the "runt" on the team....school....military service....family....my business....and just life in general.
To me it means victory doesn't always...or have to...go to the person who is bigger, faster, smarter, richer, more educated, more experienced, better equiped, and so on.
Victory goes to the person who makes the most of whatever skills, values, tools, and circumstances they've been blessed with.
Look at our industry and you'll see it doesn't take a Harvard MBA or birth with a silver spoon to be successful. It doesn't give you an edge.
Most of our success stories are people of modest "have" who made the most of that.
Victory is also defined by the person.
It needn't be the "million dollar earner" tag. It may just be enough to pay off the bills, get some breathing room, send a child to college, replace an old car, cover the mortage, buy extra groceries, get one spouse home with the kids....whatever.
The victory takes the form of any improvement in one's life .... defined by that person....and achieved by making the most of their "have".
So.....celebrate every victory.
And show us "who you are".
God Bless,
Michael

I love this thread.
I've always had a sour taste in my mouth for the "fake it till you make it crowd.".
Be yourself, invest time and energy into your education, and work consistently towards YOUR goals and dreams, and in my opinion you'll be a winner everytime.

Broker Jones

I can't and won't be anything "but" myself. When one attempts to be something or someone they are not (yet anyway) then trouble is just around the corner. There is a level of subconscious distrust on the part of those one is talking to about the business.
I think life and business is hard enough just being yourself than adding the challenges of trying to be someone you are not.
Just my thoughts on this.

I said this in another reply to another post in this or some other forum, not sure. People will spot a phony a mile away. "Fake it till you make it" is a sure fire recipe for disaster! You have to remember, the key to success in business, be it tratitional brick and mortar or online marketing, is that people buy into YOU before they will buy into your product or opportunity. If you are a phony, they will see it, and not only will you lose that customer/potential distributor, they will tell others, who will tell others, and you will become "branded" as a phony.
In numerous threads, "branding" is discussed as a good thing, if you are marketing yourself correctly, articles, blogs, forums, offline associations, etc. But the danger of negative "branding" is just as powerful, and can ruin you. So, i say, AMEN, be your self, sell yourself, the "real" you. People will appreciate the honesty and the reality you represent will go a long way toward making you successful.

I love this thread too.
"A person shows who they are by what they do with what they have." Brilliant. Wonderful life philosophy.
I have to admit that out of ignorance I've purchased MLM training cd's in the past that have encouraged me to act a certain way with prospects. It all but killed me to put that training into practice.
The training did not take into consideration MY core personality. What my strengths are and what my weaknesses are. It was just a set of generic actions that I was supposed to complete. Needless to say, it didn't work.
Also, the training suggested that I consider everyone (even the Sav-on clerk, even the Mail Boxes Etc. clerk, everyone and anyone) to be a prospect...Do you know how painful it was for someone of MY personality to actually do that? Excruciating. I'd much rather build a relationship with them than slip them a link for a video or give out a brochure. It just wasn't right for me.
I have since learned what to do with what I have. I have an approach that values and utilizes my strengths. I no longer have to think of myself as a loser because I'm afraid to talk to people about my products. The fact is, I'll never be comfortable with that approach. THAT'S MY STRENGTH. I am a people person and I'm a relationship builder. My family is the love of my life. I'm a great listener. I dress casually and I'll never be comfortable in high heels!
Accepting who I really am and realizing that I'm perfect just the way I am has allowed me to really see success in the business. That's not to say that I'm not coach-able and that I don't seek the guidance of my mentor and team. I do. We are close knit and honest. Just the way I like it!
I've always loved being part of a team from the time I was young (playing softball). THAT'S ONE OF MY STRENGTHS. I prefer a team approach for success. There is power in a mastermind group. I learn from others as they become vulnerable (and humble) enough to share their struggles with the team. And THEY learn from me. All great leaders have utilized the power of a group to achieve their success. I am no different. No one should be doing this business alone.
Learn your strengths and make them work for you.

Well said Theresa,
The only sentence in your post that I don't fully agree with is the "all great leaders use a group".
I think it was a wise man named Pliny who said, "The wisest of men follow their own counsel."
Great post MLM Mentor, I'm just playing the Devil's Advocate, and while it is up for debate on whether or not I'm a "great leader", I have always done my strongest work, when working in a solo environment first, and then sharing what I have with those who are interested.
---
I too agree with you, that the "3 foot rule" always made me feel like a ridiculously cheezy car salesmen, and to be honest that kind of approach does NOT produce leaders who will duplicate success.
I prefer now to mainly use online marketing to attract people to me, whome I then provide quality information to without expecting or needing anything in return. And offline in the "real world" people are always asking me what I do (mainly because it's apparent that I'm walking around in flip flops and shorts and t-shirts at all hours of the day and obviously don't have a "boss").
When someone does ask me what I do......I don't go into a pre-programmed dialogue of my great network marketing business.
Instead I simply answer that I'm involved in Marketing and Consulting, and that I teach people how to develop income streams 1 at a time from home.
If they want to know more, I simply get their email address, and let them know that I'll be sending them some information in a couple days....
....and then I get back to talking about normal things..NON-business related.
I'm not a 24/7 walking sales pitch anymore. (Yes in the last year and a half I have recruited almost 200 peoplel...but....)
They come to me first, and it's natural.
Have a blessed week,
Broker Jones

To brokerjones: You MUST believe in teamwork because your website is called "teambrokerjones.com" or is that a misprint?
Obviously I work in a solo environment first too. We all do. And then I bring my revelations and insights and support to my team (via our website) and they to ME. The exchange of ideas is fantastic and the learning curve is accelerated. We've got step by step instructions and links and tips and suggestions flying everywhere! BECAUSE we all know that some people are starting from scratch and don't know even the basics.......it relieves the pressure of their sponsor and in the future it will relieve pressure on themselves when they become a sponsor. The beauty and power of the internet and teamwork.
Don't get me wrong, independent thinking must be a hallmark of a network marketer but after all this is "NETWORK" marketing. In the true sense of the word, a team will support and network together to market products. That is what we do. We are constantly exchanging ideas with each other for free! This exchange of ideas is priceless!
I know this sounds corny but think about how the constitution of the United States was written ----- talk about teamwork! All presidents have their cabinet members. (yikes! political references!) Think about the great hockey teams and baseball teams, etc., in history. Made up of extremely talented individuals who were fully devoted to their team, and were perhaps even more motivated because of their team.
To me victories are sweeter when accomplished with a team!

My friend Dave Stone recently posted this eye opener on his blog MLM Today [ http://mlmtoday.blogspot.com ]. I think this is so important that I'm sharing it here in hopes it enlightens those who need it......
God Bless,
Michael
BE YOURSELF
For the first few years of my involvement in network marketing, an aspect of the training I received centered on creating a successful image. I was taught it was important to present myself as a professional business owner. There was an applied science of what is proper business attire for attracting the widest possible audience. The power of association with the "successful" leaders in the business was stressed consistently. The motto of "fake it until you make it" was fully integrated into the mindset training process.
This process was very successful..... at taking one's personality OUT of the business. Instead, I found it encouraged conditioned responses in otherwise independent thinking people. I felt as if I were completely removed from myself.
Though we could all use some help and guidance through various aspects of our business development, I think it does much more harm than good to suggest that people need to undergo a personality transplant.
This type of business can be a hell of a lot more fun if you're not spending so much energy trying to be someone or something you're not. Your individuality and the unique quality of your personality is a major key to your future success. Don't be too quick to bargain it away. Personalities do not come with the enrollment kit - you have to bring your own.
"I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam."

Great post as usual Michael. I like the internet because it does level the playing field. The internet does not care about race, sex, appearance, income level, education, location or anything really.
Anyone can define their own success and then achieve it online if they will learn the neccessary skills and then apply themselves on a consistent basis.
Thanks for writing this Michael!

That's true.
I live by a similar saying:
"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are"
I do think that quote did come from Roosevolt.
Success can mean many different things depending on what that particular individual is trying to achieve.
