Ok, so maybe none of us have heard this statement verbatim… but, wow I have had some "prospects" (I use this term loosely) who might as well have said it!
I am sure you have too.
Just today, I was on a networking site and came in contact with an interesting person that showed a little promise.
So, through email… we exchanged phone numbers and agreed that we would chat later in the day.
My goal was really just get to know this person a little more, just to understand what kind of person that he was, and what he was seeking in business.
So I dialed the phone today, he answered and we exchanged pleasantries. Sounded like a great guy!
After the initial hello's I hear…
"I used to be in the company you are in… now I am in company X and it is so much better!"
Keep in mind, Company X is a competitor within the same industry.
He went on…
"Haven't you seen MLM Watchdog.com or _ _ _ _ _ Scam.com. I have seen this information come across my desk and I decided to get out while I could…."
And then…
"So, I am sending you a link that tells why my company is better… I want you to listen to it and let me know what you think!"
What a great prospecting call for him. Even if I was considering changing companies, I would not join a leader or a company, who's only marketing strategy is tearing down others!
Unfortunately, many people in the MLM world these days use these very strategies.
It would be nice if our fellow marketers would consider how they would grow a company in the outside world. Actually, this fellow was a doctor… and I just wonder if through the years if he has booked his patients by slamming other physicians in town?
Maybe so, but it is unlikely.
The fact is, you can go to Google and do a search for just about anything anfd find negative things like ...
Coca Cola is a Scam .com probably written by a Pepsi guy.
Or
Mcdonalds Monopoly is a scam .com probably written by a Burger King guy.
Or
Hillary Clinton is a scam .com probably written by Bill. : ) (just kidding)
But you get my point. No matter what business you are in, or what company that you are involved in… if it has been around long enough you can find something negative about it.
We can choose to jump from company to company and get bogged down in the negativity, or we can continue on despite the challenges and provide solid footing for our downlines.
The sad part is, it is techniques like this that give the MLM World a bad name from time to time.
Remember… you can catch more MLM Flies with Honey! : )
Best Wishes!
Nate

Nate, you have hit it on the head! I am fed up to my neck with the negative press my company is getting from idiots who don't know what they are talking about. Problem is, prospective distributors/customers hear and believe that negative press. Now, with the advent of You-tube, and the ease with which anyone can make their own video and blast it all over the web, the problem is getting worse. How do you counter that argument when presenting a business opportunity, and they come back with, "well, i saw this or that posted on ___.scam.com, or i saw that guy on You Tube and he says_____"
I don't argue, that's pointless, and puts me on the defensive, which makes me look less credible. I simply say, "well you know, even Jesus had negative press printed about him, you can find someone somewhere saying something negative about any company or product if you look hard enough." and let it go at that. What are your thoughts?

I think trying to recruit someone that way is sneaky, backhanded and deserves a slap in the head. Who calls another networker and tries to tell them their company is bad, join mine instead. How low do you have to go. Pretty desperate if you ask me. I think to reply to someone about bad press, just say it's too bad you feel that way, see ya! NEXT!

Nate,
Sometimes it's hard to keep your cool when talking to people like that. That's the worst kind of marketing there is.
Unfortunately, he is lacking in the ethics department, so I'm sure his business is lacking too.
And congrats to you for holding your ground and realizing, that hard work and dedication is what MLM success is all about.
There's lots of great companies out there. It's up to you to make it happen.

Thank you for sharing.
You are right. These types of individuals make it more difficult for those who really want to help others succeed.
One needs to remind himself on a daily basis what their priorities are.
Help me first or help others first. Maybe there is a life lesson to be learned from this individual.

Great post Nate.
I totally agree with you, you can find negativity for just about everything that has been around long enough, on the Internet.
These marketing tactics or I'm not sure if you can call them tactics of tearing down other companies when liasing with other individuals in the same industry is just unethical and totally not the way to network in today's world.
I personally haven't experienced this situation as of yet but then again I wouldn't want to and I hope that I don't anytime soon in the future. Individuals are approach network marketing using that so called 'bashing' tactic are the ones that will in time join the 97% of the industry that continue to fail in this industry.

There are different perspectives people have on recruiting, which can often include looking to recruit other networkers. Yet, most networkers are only wanting one thing -- to build "their" business. I don't know if the people trying the negative approach are unethical or just haven't been taught ethics and etiquette in prospecting. It could be a little of both.
Over the years, I have found some marketers will go to the extreme and prey on the negativity of a company for their own gain. Whether right or wrong, I believe there is a lot of negative press and not enough positive press relating to this industry. This can sometimes be a result of the limited marketing allowed by the companies themselves or the fact many marketers are just marketing on a "me too" mentality and fail to help create the positive press.
I firmly believe every marketer should establish their own voice and their own message that helps them differenciate themselves in the marketplace. This will help the marketer not only develop personal credibility, but will help create positive press and often will even reduce the number of people who will try and recruit you to their deal.
If a marketer (usually an inexperienced marketer) senses you are proactive in action (yet not yet a huge success), they will think they can use you to help build their business... hey, you are the type of person they are looking for. And they end up (or you let them) prey on your vulnerable position.
TIP - all the marketer has to do is look at your website and the way you present yourself online to recognize whether or not you are having decent results from your business building efforts.
I have found the greater success I have had, the less likely one will try and recruit me to their business. I find a lot has to do with posture (how you communicate with the person)... and many times you get fewer people trying to recruit you because they feel you are out of their league.
I don't object to people prospecting me because sometimes what they offer can be beneficial to me and my business. But i do have a criteria and standards set for me to use as a baseline for whether or not I will do business with them.
A good response I have used for those who try to recruit me to their business is, "I am pretty locked into what I am doing and not exapanding my portfolio at this time..." -- this usally stops further attempts to recruit. The other thing I do is turn the focus toward them and what challenges they or their team may be experiencing. It is all about posture.
Just a few things to consider!

Hehe.
The instant he started with that line, the phone call
would be so over. I do well with my company and
I make sure the prospect on the phone understands
how solid I am.
It's all in the posture man, your prospects need to
know, you are committed to your cause and aren't
a jumper or you'll get that again and again.

In my mind, there is not a much lower approach to sponsoring a new associate than tearing down their current business. This is totally unprofessional and shows a genuine lack of understanding people.
If you attack someone's current business, you are basically calling them an idiot for being so stupid as to be in that business. Now that really goes a long way toward building a new relationship, doesn't it?
