I'm curious how other NWMr's keep their momentum up.  95% of NWMr's do their home businesses while still working full or part-time at their J.O.B.

It can be difficult when you've had a couple of days off and you've been able to be very productive in your home-based business...but then you have to work several days in a row and it seems the momentum fizzles.  How do you keep it going?

Momentum is important.

For me, the book "The Slight Edge" by Jeff Olson is a validation of my entire life really.  The emphasis on doing the right daily actions (no matter how small) as a path to success is invaluable.  It's about doing those things on a daily basis that may not seem to matter much (for the good OR the bad) in the short term...but over time they culminate in either a grand achievement or a terrible crisis.

For example, eating a cheeseburger today won't kill me.  But eating cheeseburgers several times a week for many years will!  Writing a blog post or making a call or participating on a forum won't INSTANTLY grow my business today, but over time those activities (and many others!) are what build success.

In other words, the most gratifying and rewarding and important things you'll ever do in your life are going to take dedicated, committed daily actions to achieve.  If you are hoping for instant success, you're fooling yourself.  Yes there are flukes, rare, but there are.  If you're hoping for real, long lasting and legacy like success, then that will take some time.

Olson suggests instead of making yourself a "to do" list...make a list every evening (or the next morning if that works better for you) of "the things you did right" from the day before (not just from a home based business point of view...but all aspects of your life).  Take a moment to reflect.  Write them down.  You've got to get in touch with what you're doing right!  Pat yourself on the back.  Then get back to work.  The next day, do it again.  The momentum will begin to build and you're perception will change for the better.

There's a heck of a lot of power in habits.  There's power for good and there's power for bad.  The most successful people in the world will all attest to having certain good habits (probably multiple daily good habits!) that they perform religiously everyday.  It's the "STEADY" part in "slow and STEADY wins the race" that I'm talking about here people.  It really works.

Your thoughts...

Momentum becomes stable when you develop leaders who begin duplicating your success.

Success comes through the practice of "Consistent Effort Daily", and is very much in line with what you have read by Mr. Olsen.

We've all heard that building a Home Business is a Marathon, and not a Sprint Race, and even though it is a "cliche" it is the honest truth. The people who "get rich over night seemingly" either had a HUGE list of contacts, or they got really lucky finding someone who did have a huge list.

I build my online business "brick by brick", and to be honest I don't worry about "momentum". This isn't a business that is "won" by fast peaks.

Success comes from successfully helping an active distributor of mine to practice "Consistent Effort Daily".

By "Consistent Effort Daily" I mean spending 30 minutes or more per day on Education, and 30 minutes or more per day on Direct Action.

Taking this process even one step further.

I've learned that we are in the "Golden Age Of The Internet" and there is a whole diversification of methods of earning money from home.

Over the last 2 years I've been researching a myriad of opportunities, and through extensive due dilligence, relationships built, and even through the use of connections that I have in "very high places in the government", I have found several "investment" opportunities ranging from Forex, Currencies, Foreign Real Estate, to something simple such as Sports Betting Systems, and I'm having tremendous success showing people how to earn $1000 a month up front without ever having to mention my MLM opportunity to them.

I'm sure you can imagine, that after I show someone how to earn $1,000 per month without expecting anything in return.

They jump at the chance to work with me in MLM.

Have a blessed week,

Broker Jones

Hi Theresa -

My favorite part of your post is this:  "For example, eating a cheeseburger today won't kill me.  But eating cheeseburgers several times a week for many years will!  Writing a blog post or making a call or participating on a forum won't INSTANTLY grow my business today, but over time those activities (and many others!) are what build success."

I just wish that more people understood that concept.  I still hear network marketers say, "I have been doing this and that for a whole month, and nothing has happened.  What am I doing wrong?"  They just don't get that it takes time to build a business.

I have to agree. It is the little things that we do on a daily basis that will keep us going in the right direction. Like you said, the good habits that we develop and perform consistently.

I have discovered from all of my readings and research that the truly successful people in life have developed this approach to finding their success (personal and business).

Thanks for the reminder. It is good for the motivation.

John

This is quite possibly the best piece of advice i have heard in a very long time! If i may diverge away from the business side for just a minute. I read an incredible book, compilations by a 17th century monk and a 20th century theologian,  titled "Practicing the Presence of God." They posed the question, "is it possible to be concious of the presence of God every second of every minute of every hour of every day, and still be able to function in your daily business routines, or your daily activities of life?" They suggested working toward that worthy goal, but, and this is the part your post reminds me of, don't beat yourself up when you fall short.

I see that same wisdom in what you said in the section of your post above. Don't concentrate on your failures, reflect on, reward yourself for, and continue doing those things you did right! Awesome! Give yourself POSITIVE reinforcement, daily. Sure you need to be honest, recognize where you fell short, but don't beat yourself up over it. Commit to doing it differently or better, the next day, then pat yourself on the back for what you did do that was right, put the day to bed, sleep peacefully and awaken to new possibilities, in the morning.

In fact, one should never go to bed angry, frustrated, upset at oneself or at anyone else. So, don't get bent out of shape over it, accept it, resolve to change it, then put it to bed. Things usually look a little different in the light of day, anyway. Wow, what an inspiration that post was! I am blessed and greatful!

I think of momentum as being a product of consistency. Work on your business every day. Do something meaningful and productive. Your normal routine may be to spend two hours a day on business activities. With our busy lives, there will be an occasional day when fitting in two hours (and getting ANY sleep) will be impossible. On those days, don't beat yourself up or get overly anxious. Just try to take even 15 minutes to make a phone call to a downline associate. Call a prospect. Just do something that you know, in your heart, was a step forward that day - no matter how small. This will help keep you going - just make sure to do something each day.

Awsome piece of advice Eldon. Even one small step in the right direction can save your momentum. I will remember that one. Even a 15 minute training call to a dl member, or call one prospect, anything, as long as it is productive.

Thanks Philip.  I cannot over emphasize the importance of the book, "The Slight Edge" (by Jeff Olson) in my life.  I'm sure we've all said it about other books with some conviction but I REALLY, REALLY mean it with this book, "It is a MUST read!"

You mentioned reflecting but not dwelling on failures.  Good point.  In fact I've had to challenge my whole idea about failing.  I have to admit that for a long time in my life (in certain areas in particular) I have felt that "Failure is NOT an option."

Well, there is NOTHING in this world that will activate my internal mute button more quickly than that attitude.  For me, that attitude leads to perfectionistic thinking and Lord knows if I can't do it perfectly then I'm not gonna do it at all!

Also, believing that failure is not an option always leads to analysis paralysis for me because what If I'm not making the RIGHT move?  Heck I better analyze this situation some more...meanwhile nothing gets done.

In other words, if a person is going to succeed (and you can ask the most successful people in the world and they'll tell you it's true) failure better be an option!  Look at Thomas Edison for goodness sake.  But he didn't view his trial and error process as failing.  That's the difference.  He said, "I have not failed.  I've simply discovered ten thousand ways that don't work."

Successful people fail their way to the top!

I'm currently getting comfortable (ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL FOR ME) with the concept of "Ready, Fire, Aim" rather than "Ready, Aim, Fire" -------- because for me it's in the "aiming" that there is hesitation and old tapes.

There's more Philip...there's more...

The way I do it is,

I keep myself really busy.

Generally the Network Marketers who lose momentum

stop doing the daily actions needed to bring in both

new business and people to their team.

The effect over time is, their team gets smaller and

smaller and eventually they quit.

Being active and remembering why you're doing this

business is key to make it day to day.

Great tips

Constant Action is always important -- for me I am focusing on making set numbers of how many people I share the opportunity I have to each week.

Hitting these numbers help me keep motivated and build the momentum -- teaching others this same method works too because it creates momentum throughout.

I read Jeff's book and it has a lot of great gold nuggets... One interesting message I picked up that can make a difference in establishing your momentum in your business is the fact our attitude, whether positive or negative, is guided by our philosophy.

I have taught over the years about discipline and the fact our discipline is fueled by our attitude and a balanced alignment mentally, morally, and physically to do what we need to do to get our job done.

Consistent action is a key to momentum. make sure you are in alignment!
