I've read that this offline method can be very effective when done right, and is fairly cheap, not that I can give any idea of costs.

The benefit of a post card is that many other eyes will get to see your message other than the receiver, and that is always a good thing. Agree?

I've considered doing it from Western Australia for the US market.
