Recently, I met someone online who was spending about $500.00 a month to purchase leads to send his post cards to.  But, he soon discovered that the leads he was getting were not quality leads.

In his frustration, he came up with the idea of using the phone book to get leads to send his post cards to and what do you know? He started getting more people joining his business. The good thing about this is that these leads are free.

He shared his story with me because I had asked whether anyone was having any success with sending post cards to leads and he was the one who responded with his story.

Since our discussion, I have decided to send out post cards to people in the phone book. I first looked at the demographics information of my state on the internet. I use the demographics information to determine the economic status of these people. I am looking for certain individuals who meet a certain income level because these individuals are more prone to having the income to join me in my business.

Today I sent out my first batch of post cards. I will be sending out more in the upcoming weeks. It is too early to tell whether this is working. I usually give a marketing method 90 days before I access whether it is a success or not a success at which point I will replace with another marketing method. I hope it works. If not in this state, I may look at sending my post cards to other states. Alabama is not known to be very open minded.

What kind of success did you have with the postcards?

You know, I just could not find the time to send them out.  I made some post cards.  In fact, they are sitting in my office now, but I have been so busy lately that I have not been able to put the addresses on the cards and mail them out.

One of the things I have started doing is calling different restaurants and telling them about my business.  Imagine that, I am actually going through the phone book making cold calls.  There used to be a time I was too scared to talk to people. But, what I am doing is if the manager or owner of the restaurant is interested, I will get a sample package together for them, mail it off, and then follow up with them to find out whether they liked the coffee.

I am trying to push myself beyond my comfort zone a little bit at a time.  This is the only way I am going to overcome my fear and grow.  It is working because I never have been able to talk to people I never knew.  Now, I am doing it and I have been able to get people interested in the sample packages.  I sent out four packages and will probably be following up with them on Friday.

Yeah I was just curious because we are seeing very good response rates with postcards right now because we personalize everything.

Yes, I agree that sending out cards do work.  Of course, you must have cards that are able to connect and it is good to target your market to a specific group so that your business is better directed towards people who will more than likely have an interest in your business or in your product.

I just wish I had the time to continue working on these cards, but I only have a couple of hours during the course of the day to work on my business.

My business is growing which means I have been more involved in mentoring the members in my group.  I enjoy it, but it does take time away from my marketing. I usually have to make up the time late on Friday and Saturday night.

This is just some of the sacrifices an entrepreneur must endure.  I guess getting less sleep is one sacrifice I am going to have to make until I can get rid of the J.O.B.

You know, I love hearing things like this.  When I first got started I was cold calling everyone from my school who might be interested in my business, I didn't have any success, but I learned a lot of getting out of my comfort zone.  I also did some 3 footing of people too.  I think these two methods are the toughest methods out there, because they get you out there and you can't hide behind a computer if you get a bad client.  It is a very gratifying experience though.  Keep up the good work.

Thank you TGArthur.  I may be starting to do the one-on-one, face-to-face interviews soon.  I probably won't do it in my town of Montgomery Alabama.   I was told that this city is growing out, but now growing up.  I have tried on numerous occassions to get these people involved in a number of opportunities and they won't budge.

Yesterday, while me and some of my coworkers were driving for lunch in a car together, we saw a car that had a car sign on it saying, "Get gas for cheap, ask me how", or something of that nature.  Anyway, I told them that I suspected that the man was involved in a work from home business. I have seen signs similar to that one before and it was affiliated with a work from home business.  I went on and told them that home-based businesses have created more millionaires than any other industry.  All I got was silence.

Most people know that I am a proponent of home-based businesses and that I hate working for other people.  When I talk about my real estate business, then they want to hear more, but when I talk about my home-based business, I get nothing.  I guess I am going to have to show them by starting to make fantastic money, which I know I will do.  Once I do, I am sure they will ask questions then, but I doubt they will do anything beyond that.

It is unfortunate because I am in the technical industry and I am hearing more and more how companies are looking to save money by outsourcing work to other countries, like India.  The usual way companies do this is they invest in an outsourcing company and most will end up letting the permanent U.S employees go.

I don't want to be around when this starts to happen.  I want to be retired from working for anybody by then and doing my own business, living very comfortably.  Maybe then my coworkers will show an interest, but I am not holding my breath.

I would really be interested in tips on this.  Picking from the phone book was something we did when I was a cars salesman.  We'd sit down when sales were slow and write out personal little letters to random people we picked.  It seems like picking the demographics of  a community is a much SMARTER way to go though.

I had thought of the idea of postcards once, but then opted out because I couldn't decide who to send any to.  I guess this makes up my mind though.  Any tips on how to set up a successful one?  What do you include on yours?  Graphics? Phone numbers? Email address?  short note on the product?  Thanks in advance!

When I am sending out cards to perspective customers, I usually do some research on the area.  In other words, I look at the income levels of a specific area.  I would not market to people who cannot afford my products.  Thus, it would not make sense to send them any cards.

I usually the internet to see what kinds of incomes the different areas on my city have.  Once I am able to narrow this information down, then I am ready to go through the phone book and select names and numbers of those people who live in those areas.

It has worked in the past.  My problem is I am finding it hard to find the time to spend getting the cards together.

I had some post cards printed up at VistaPrint. If you buy your drop cards there, they usually have sales when you can get stuff really cheap. So, I had a targeted list, mailed the cards out, and nothing happened. Then I was reading yet another eBook about offline marketing, and it said the only way this type of advertising is successful is if you send the same party more than one post card, preferably changing the message a little or at least the picture, will result in increased response. It also said the more times you send to the same organization, the better your response would be. That's what the book said. Has anyone every really tried this?
