Ok i have a question. I am reading how when you post articles and things like that it creates backlinks and it brings you higher up on the search engines. Obviously that is very vague but hopefully you understand what i am getting at.

Now, i was also told that this does not bring your webpage higher up on the rankings if its one of those generic sites like company urls like http://www.jacob.mycompanyx.com/new right?

BUT what if i buy a domain name that is like http://www.jacobhyten.com and forward it to my company url the stupid one and then will it increase my placement since its like a real address?

Thanks guys!

Yes that is exactly what you should be doing. That way you can control the important things for SEO on your own web page such as meta tags, etc.

If you have access rights to your home page (you can make edits) then you're ok. If you don't have edit rights to your home page then you'll have to View Source on your web page and see if they have set you up with meta tags and if so, determine their quality (they're probably ok).

Meta tags are not the only thing search engines look at on a web page but they do carry the most weight. You would only need your own web page if you (1) didn't have edit rights to your company supplied home page AND (2) they didn't put any meta tags on the home page.

Sorry to hijack here, and this may seem like a stupid question, but are meta tags really neccessary?

I recently bought a book by Bruce C. Brown called How to use the Internet to Advertise, Promote, and Market Your Business or Web Site with Little or No Money

(long title )

Although he highly recommends using meta tags, he also states that the Title tag is the most important tag, and that spider search engines like Google ignore meta tags.  I understand the importance of using keywords within your page, but how important is it to have meta tags that list those keywords?

As to the subject of the thread, I had no idea that using a company website address would be a road block to SEO.

Search engines do use the Title tag - they use the text in the body of the home page and the other pages. Can you not have meta tags? Of course but without meta tags you are severely hindered. So the bottom line is this: if you have edit access to you home page then there is no question you should add meta tags - not doing so wouldl be like submitting your website to all the search engines except Google (Google has 70% of the search engine market).

If you don't have edit access and you don't want to spend 5.00 a month having your own website (so you can edit your home page meta tags) then don't worry about it - if your budget won't allow 5.00 a month then that's ok, just do the best you can and hope for the best.

As an FYI there are website SEO packages that will analyze your website for ALL of the SEO features it should have and tell you what to do to fix things. SEO is hard work, very hard work and to some, it's worth the cost to have a professional package give you peace of mind to know you've done everything you can to optimize your website for the search engines. I recommend a product that I use myself on my own website called Traffic Blazer.

You build links to the URL.  Thats it.  It may help if the

text in the links has relevant keywords to the search

terms you want to rank for.

Chances are your affiliate site isn't well designed for

SEO, and particularly for you carving out a niche for

your business.  Since you have no control over that

you can try  to fool the search engines with a doorway

page.

Its probably premature in your online marketing career

to suggest that you should have a site that is all about

YOU and YOUR business.  This is really the best approach,

IMO, but its not as easy as promoting an affiliate site.

To do this you will need to figure out web-hosting and

do some copywriting and layout stuff to make yourself

seem like somebody worth joining in business.

Regardless, those links that point at the domain name

you have purchased will continue to drive traffic and

help you rank with Google.

Statistically speaking, the chances are very good that

you won't stay with your present MLM and will move to

something else. If you realize this at the beginning,

its easy to have a plan for this.

If you are going to go to all the work of optimizing a

site and building a lot of backlinks, I recommend you

choose a domain name that you will be able to use

for any project you wish to promote.
