| I had never even heard of sitemaps until recently. Now that I've added a sitemap for search engines to better index my site, I want to know if the sitemap needs to be updated regularly? Or does it only need to be updated if I over-haul my site?

I only ever update my site's sitemap file if any of the following occur....
A. I add an important page
B. The importance of a page changes
C. The rate at which I update the pages changes
Normally this means I change the sitemap about once a month.

Thanks ...that's what I thought, but then I started to second guess myself questioning if it needed to be updated everytime I update my site.

The sitemap's purpose is really to define the structure, importance and update frequency of the different parts of the site.
Changing the content on existing pages doesn't really impact the sitemap unless the new content changes the importance of the page.

| Is there an advantage to having a sitemap? I have never put one on my site, but I have started to see them recently.

FYI - If you use wordpress there is a plugin you can use that updates your sitemap automatically for you so you never have to worry about it.
