*  "From everything I have read, it is best to work with a local internet company for SEO/SEM. My problem is that as you know, there are a lot of "Snake Oil Salesmen" out there who make large promises and do little more than take your money."

Those that need to stick with the "local" companies are folks that are really targeting their local market. Someone "virtual" won't know your local lingo and the demographics of your local market.  If it is a global market, it really doesn't matter where they are located, as long as they can perform!

If you're intende reach for your web presence is beyond local .... than I highly recommend using SiteBuildIt software to build an optimized site (link is on my blog Best MLM Resources...see my sig below).

There are a large amount of people that say "I'm a Search Marketing Specialist."  Yet, when you ask them questions, they are still using old techniques that are now obsolete because of the constant change of the algorithms used by search engines. There are also some people/companies that will tell you, "I will get you to the #1 spot in X hours!".   Rememmber, this does not happen.  Run, and run fast!  It takes work, planning and strategic techniques to get your site in the rankings.  If they are using "white hat seo" this will not be an overnight success.  Usually, overnight successes are using "black hat seo" and will eventually be penalized or banned by the search engines.   Not something you want to pay for.

Look for someone who does "organic search engine marketing."

*  "How important are meta tags and are they truly still used today or is content more valuable?"

Some people will tell you that meta tags aren't important anymore.  My research and experience shows otherwise.  The description tag is what the search engine lists under the title tag in the search results.  Keywords allow you to keep your keywords organized on the page.  Just because Google doesn't pay attention to it at this moment due to some keyword stuffing issues, that doesn't mean that won't start in the future.  Wouldn't you rather have it already set up?  Not to mention, some search engines still take the keyword meta tag into account.

Now, content is EVERYTHING when it comes to Search Marketing.  The job of the search engine is to give the user relevant content to their search inquiry.  Without content, and lots of it, on your site, the search engine has nothing to give to their user. So, by keeping your site updated with a lot of content, you are giving the search engines more pages to skim through to see if you match the inquiry. The best way to do this is by creating a blog and having that blog be connected through your URL (http://www.yoursite.com/howtoliveahealthylifeblog, for example).

In addition to having your content on your blog, you want to have your content all over the web, also.  Get SEEN, and build quality backlinks so that your site is seen as a place to that people like. The more popular your site, the better it ranks.

*  "What is the best method of choosing key words and phrases? Are pay per click ads realistic for a startup business with very little money set aside for advertising? Would I be better served doing something else?"

Keywords are important in everything you do online.  Whether it be post on Forums, create a profile on a social networking site, create a Squidoo lens, write on your blog, comment on a blog, write an article, or write copy for your website.  Everything needs to have some keywords in there if you want your information to pop up when someone makes a search inquiry.  Also, when you link back to your site, the search engines take a gander at what content is on the page linking to you and they use that as relevancy to what your site is about.

There are several keyword generating tools out there. Google's adwords tool is free to use and useful.  Yahoo has one for its Paid Search Listings, so does Microsoft. Besides these, there are other places that SEM Professionals swear by, like http://www.keywordgenerator.com , http://www.combinewords.com ,
http://www.hitwise.com , http://www.wordtracker.com , and
http://www.keyworddiscovery.com .

Two other sites with great webmaster tools are http://www.digitalpoint.com/  and http://www.submitexpress.com/keytracker.php .

Now, my opinion on PPC Campaigns? They work for some businesses and some campaigns, but not all! If you are trying to bring members into something FREE to upsell another item, then use PPC.   If you are promoting a BIG sale on in demand items, use PPC.  But, if you are just trying to get your name out there, you may be wasting your time.  Most people do not purchase from the Paid Search.  Most times people are researching before they even buy.  Your site may be getting clicked on merely for research and price comparison/research.  You want to use PPC when you have a warm market to pitch to.

And NEVER use PPC to advertise a bizop.  Total waste of your marketing dollars.

To get going, I suggest networking on social networking sites (e.g. Ryze) and forums (e.g. this one, RichDad, Warrior Forum) where your market (health advocates, small businesses, internet marketers, travelers, food junkies, WAHMs, etc) would hang out. And, start submitting articles on your business niche.  For example ..... how to live a healthy lifestyle, or travel tips, or how to choose a cell phone, etc.

God Bless,
Michael

Again, Michael, you've given such a wealth of knowledge in such a short space.

I too have found that there are a lot of companies out there that tell you they have the magic touch for SEO...but there is no way of knowing if they're truly in the know.

I'd be interested in discussing SEO with you (as well as PPC, Article Marketing, Blog Marketing and any other ideas you're mulling over)

All our best,

Michael, I couldn't agree more. SEO isn't rocket science IMO and I would NEVER pay anyone to do it for me. It just takes a little work and time but if you do it correctly then the time is shortened quite a bit.

With SEO its all about your pages internal linking structure and where your links from the outside world are pointing to.

For example...at the very least you should have your main index page and then a blog off of that page. The blog should have article content as posts that have a keyword rich them to them and then when you start linking from other sites, directories, etc...you point those links to the blog pages which give your site relevance and passes up page rank to the main site.

This process has worked VERY well for me.

Another great keyword discovery tool that I use is http://www.kwbrowse.com

Cheers!

Here's a question...

When I google my name, there are some days when all my sites or posts come up, and other days where some of the sites don't come up.  Also.. I notice a marked difference in results based on the search engine... let's say google vs. goodsearch as an example.

Can someone explain the "why" behind these scenarios?

Thanks!

Well... the main reason is because Google is constantly changing.  All sites are in a constant flux as to how many pages goolge keeps. I have blog that has over 700 posts... only which 100 are original content... over 600 are summaries or headlines for off site posts. That site has shown anywhere from 240 - 1200 pages in google over the last year... it all depends on the day of the week... I have another site that is just all constantly updating rss feeds from ebay... and google lists anywhere from 100-700 pages of the 2500 pages generated.

So.. some days goolge shows certain pages and blocks others.. and other days you get a completely different look.  It all depends on how unique you content is and how you have it linked...

Another thing that can cause problems with dropping pages from your various sites concerns the severs that they sit on and the uniqueness of their ip addresses. I have two fifferent sites that have identical content on them (only thing different is the meta tags) and they are both hosted on the same server. Well... one day google will show one site and not the other... and then on other days... it flip-flops.

Ok.. I hope that helps... just know that "Google is weird sometimes"... and you can never count on anything every just staying the same. Its always changing.

If you have only one page, I would target Google as the search engine to do SEO for.

Each search engine is a little different and it takes a lot of information to do SEO for each. There are tools and services that let you do that.

If you have the resources you may wish to have different pages for different search engines and optimize them for that engine.

You could go further and optimize for different keywords using different pages optimized for different search engines.

You could also drive yourself nuts. There is a balance. Don't spend your whole life tweeting pages to rank high and ignore the rest of your business.

If you know of ... or can come up with .... other insightful questions, please post them and an informative answer to the issue.  If we keep this up and follow the Q&A format....than this thread can serve as sort of a FAQ resource for forum members on SEO.

God Bless,
Michael

Before I go spend any money optimizing my campaigns, I would like to get your opinions first.  Here's the short story.

For the first time in my life, I am using Google Adwords successfully to the point that I'm making more than I'm spending.  In other words, I give you $15, but you give me $20 back!  What I'm trying to do currently is make the campaigns more effective by, instead of giving you $15, I'm only going to give you $10, but you will still give me $20.  I'm in profit, but want to optimize like every business does across the country, whether brick and mortar or the internet.

The campaign starts out with the google ad that attracts attention; it then goes to an intermediate ad that tells about my experience (mostly failures), which most people can relate to in the industry I'm in; and then pitches my primary home business.  The intermediate ad has a click button that sends people to a sign up form on my primary business if they want a five minute overview.

My focus will be on this intermediate ad.  I would like to talk offline or online if there are any experts out there to take a look at this intermediate ad and what can be done for even better results.

So, since this is my first post, I guess I'll leave it at that.  I'm anxious to hear back from everyone and how SEO worked or didn't work well for you, or if some good common sense from experiences by you will do the trick.
