I have been doing a lot of reading on the forums and I have read and keep reading over and over again, Julieanne's free Blog Course. (By the way, thanks so much, Julieanne!)

I have decided to start blogging. Our finances are tight so I have narrowed it down to Blogger or TypePad.  I need something that isn't very technical and not very expensive.

I first thought I would go with Blogger since it's free and it's with Google but what about the advertising? Will Google put advertising on there that they want, which might compete with the business I am hoping to help attract traffic to?

Am I able to control who advertises on my blog with TypePad? Am I not understanding any of this at all?

Is there some other platform out there that someone would suggest for a poor, technically challenged person?

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Karen,

if you need something that is not at all technical and without spending a dime, you can try blogger by Google. Google will not display any of their ads in your own personal blogger site unless you include them yourself.

I have never use typepad before, hence I am unable to provide you with any info about typepad. I apologized for this. I hope this will help you.

Yours Sincerely
Bill Chen

Thanks for the info. I am really wanting to get started with my blog but have been waiting for some feedback.

It's good to know that Google won't be displaying competing ads on my blog.

Right now I am writing some entries that I want to make in my blog when I get it started and waiting for some more input.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Karen,

I think it's a good idea to start
off with Blogger first.

Your advertisement is only turned
on if you turn it on and it's called
"Google Adsense" , this generates
revenue for you at no-cost.

The reason is that Google loves
content and will treat your blog
with respect to match those
advertisements.

Again, its another topic we can go
on.

If you're really looking for another
platform then Wordpress should be
alright.

However, in anycase - if you do need
some personal assistance I can help you
just add me in Skype and I can guide
you along on how to setup your blog.

I'm particularly good with Blogger too.

Take Care,

Vern

Thanks Jon,

I did get started with Blogger. You can find a link to it in my signature. I also posted it in the thread that asks you to post your blogs in.

I have been pinging it each time I put in a new entry but I am having trouble with one site. I was wanting to track the hits on ice rocket but I am having a horrible time trying to figure out how and where to correctly put the code they give me. Their support center is of absolutely no help whatsoever. I have tried to communitcate with them more than once and they don't give me any useful information at all.

Did you try using statcounter.com instead?

their tracking code is easier to set and
you can use it for no cost.

Cheers,

I recommend using Feed Burner at http://www,feedburner.com to ptimize and ping.

You can also set up a squidoo lens and putma link there back to your blog and a link on your blog to your squiddo site.

When you publish and article, then put the link to the article on your blog and suidoo site.  This will increase your page rank.

Jon

Hi Jon,

Although I've heard some buzz about squidoo lens,
I've not really got started yet.

Would you care to share a little on how you got
started and how it has benefited you in a business
sense?

That would be great information if you can post it
for all to see here.

Thanks a bunch.

Vern

Hi Karen,

To answer your question about Google displaying competing ads...Yes, you can "filter" out any competitive ads that you don't want to display on your page via Google's competitive ad filter. The competitive ad filter works by blocking ads that link to specific URLs. By entering a top level domain such as http://www.example.com, you can block all ads that link to that domain, as well as to subdirectories below that domain.

So the bottom line is yes, you can definitely block competitive ads from displaying on your blog. Of course, just because you use Blogger does not mean that you need to display any AdSense ads on your blog. That's entirely up to you! Google doesn't put any advertising on the Blogger blogs. Any and all advertising would be added by you and by you alone. You have complete control over all content on your blog, which is the way it should be!

Shine on,
Aar:cool:n

And yes, I think Blogger is probably the best place to start - especially for someone who is not proficient in HTML, etc. Ive been on it from the get-go and have been very pleased. And don't worry about being technically challenged. When I first started blogging I had absolutely no clue about HTML or anything. I just taught myself as I went along.

And now I get around 200 or more unique visitors to my blog every single day. :) Not bad for someone who was totally clueless at the start! So I'm glad you started blogging Karen. And I wish you a ton success with it.

Shine on,
Aar:cool:n

PS: As for site stats (tracking hits, etc.) I think SiteMeter.com is one of the best free ones out there. One simple code to put at the bottom of your template and that's it. It lets you track hits, where the hits came from, what web page they came from, IP address, location (city, state, country), entry pages, exit pages, out clicks, etc. It's well worth it.

Thanks Aaron for the heads up on Sitemeter.com. I have installed it on my Blog and
I am looking forward to the stats. If there aren't any hits, I may regret knowing it.;)

Vern has mentioned needing some input about squidoo. May I say, "Me too, please"?

Vern,

I signed up with statcounter.com, like you suggested, and it's doing a great job. I can't believe all the different stats it gives me...and for free!

Thanks so much!

Vern,

Squidoo works like a blog, just the interface is a bit different.

It is easy to set up.

If you do article marketing, you can put links to your published articles on your blog and squidoo lens.  then put a link on your blog to your squidoo lens and a link on your lens to your blog.  Post to both at least twice a week and they will show high on Google.

If you write and publish articles, this process will increase their rank.  I get most of my articles in the first three or four positions on Google in about 2-3 weeks.  I get excellent results doing this becasue most people when they enter a search phrase look at the first two pages of organic search results.  If you have several articles, your blog and squidoo lens all ont eh first page of Goole, thousands of popel a day will look at them and .... who know how many will read your resource box, go to your landing page and contact you about your primary business.

Try it and let me know if you need any help and how it goes.

Jon:)

Hi karen,

Yeah, statcounter is awesome isn't it?
It's pretty basic and doesn't tell you
so much details but you can see this
from your CPanelX - webalizer anyway.

simple and it does the job.

Hi Jon,

Thanks. I've been contemplating
to either use squidoo or wordpress
to do this tactics and I really appreciate
you sharing this out here on this thread.

I think I'm going to subscribe to this thread.

This way I should come back and share my
results too.

I totally suck big time on .php thats why I
kind of had some fear with blogger.

Hey Aaron,

good to see you back here on this board
and it's always a great joy to see you my friend.

Goodness -> 200 unique views per day!

I only get 20-50 per day. LOL!

Tell us your secret!

Regards,
Vern
