It is my understanding and this is based on some research I have done, that comments have little to no value to the effectiveness of your blogs. It is really the content of your blogs that brings viewers to your blogs. Now, in saying this, if you are using comments as just a means of networking, then comments are fine, but if you think that by adding comments to your blogs will somehow increase your profit, this is not the case. I am there are many who may argue against this, but this is what I have seen and heard from others who are quite successful at it. I have decided not to include comments in my blogs. As your vieweres increase, the comments can be a challenge to manage and my time is very limited; with a job and other responsibilities, it would be too much for me to manage.

Hey Lawren, i definitely agree with you. Comments are good but the real results are in the increase in traffic and pagerank. I too wouldn't focus on the comments; they are a great perk though for building repor and great relationships with prospects, customers, etc.

One way to get a backlink to your site is to post comments in other people's blogs. List your keyword in the name area, list your name in the comment section, and list your website address or inner page in the URL. This will hyperlink a keyword phrase and create a backlink.
In terms of getting people to comment I do best when I send out an email to my list inviting them to visit my blog, read my current post, and then comment. I always get a few people to do that, so I know I am getting read for that day at least.

| I found that when I turned on comments I got a lot of spam comments and it was always such a hassle and waste of time to delete comments. That time could instead be used by me to write more articles for my blog.

| WordPress filters my spam for me. I just delete it. I am actually talking about posting comments and hyperlinking keyword phrases back to your website, blog, and inner pages. This is a great way, that is free, to create backlinks to your site which over time search engines love.

Yes, there are benefits and drawbacks for comments.
I'd say that generally, marketing blogs don't need them so much. But if you have a "pundit" type blog then getting comments does draw readers repeatedly, and I think build traffic.
The reason is that when people are arguing around your blog it generates a kind of excitement. (It's sort of like seeing a crowd gathering outside a venue. People come along to see what the fuss is about!)

Actually, allowing comments is indeed be beneficial to your blog, no question about it. Quite simply, they increase traffic and they allow a community of readers to emerge and interact with one another.
And comments are indexed by the search engines, so you should also get a little extra traffic due to the additional content they add. But most importantly, they allow your readers to interact with YOU the blogger, as well as other readers. And when people leave a comment they generally come back to see if you or anyone else has added something after it...which means more traffic!
If you're worried about comment spam and such, then just set your blog so that comments are moderated first. That way you can approve them before they go live. But honestly, it shouldn't be much of a problem. I average around 200 visitors a day and I've RARELY ever had to delete a comment.
Bottom line, if you're trying to make money online then you want to be as transparent as possible. By not allowing your readers to interact with you you'll not only have less traffic, you'll probably have lower conversions as well. Trust me, there's a reason why every successful blog allows comments. But it is a personal choice. And if youe find that allowing comments isn't working well for you, then by all means, don't use them. One size never fits all.
Shine on,
Aar n

I say comments are a must both allowing them and commenting on other blogs in your interests. That's what the "blogosphere" is all about, the collective intelligence. Usually you can make it so that you have to preview the comments before they're posted to avoid spam.
