I am looking to begin blogging and need some help from the group.  I am trying to find a niche within my general topic that will get the best results.

So here's my problem.  I don't know how to look for or interpret the information that is going to give me solid keywords to form my blog around.  I know that you are suppose to blog about what you know and love, which I intend to do.  I am just looking to find out how to better  the content to make it more effective.

I am using http://www.goodkeywords.com/ which shows how many hits/month and optional words to go along with it.

Is there a certain # of visits/month, or some sort of percentage used that compares visits in one keyword compared to maybe the highest ranking keyword?  How are people using this information to help them to select keywords?

Is there somewhere to look up information that may give some clue to profitability of a keyword?  Say a word like shoe has the same number of hits as the word respect.  The word shoe is more likely to have advertisers wanting to pay to be on your blog since it is a product.  But what if the words were Nike and Puma.  How would you know which one to write about?  Are you looking on things like https://adwords.google.com to get information about how much people are paying for certain words? Or how competitive it is for each word?  Is there a way to find out how many people are using adwords to advertise the same keywords (and then compare this to the overall traffic for that keyword)?  I think I saw something similar to this on Site Build It!, but I don't need a website (yet).

Are other people paying for these services with certain companies?  If you have, would you recommend it?  I would like to do it myself if it is possible for a newbie to do so, but would look into paying for it if that is the best alternative.

This forum has been nothing short of amazing so far.  Please keep the advice coming.

Thanks for the help,

Dr. Joe

You want to make sure that a term is at least getting enough clicks that it's viable. If no ones looking for it then why bother?

It's probably a good term if there are a lot of advertisers using it or they wouldn't be paying for it.

When you're looking at terms, look at 3-4 word phrases. Then, go search for them on Google and check out the 1st 10-20 results for each keyword. Is there room for more content? If so, blog away. There are tons of resources available on how to get more backlinks to your blog.
