Lots of people are using blogs to get search engine placement by using keywords in the blog title and in the posts too.
Probably wouldn't hurt to look into this so you can get seo visitors to it. There is a seo discussion here in the forum that may help you to understand that aspect of it.
The other thing that I've used blogs for is branding myself, called a whois page and tells about yourself, really works out well for people to get to know you.

Thanks for all of the great information.
I have found MyBlogLog and posting comments to other blogs to be very helpful in getting traffic to my site.
Another tip is if you aren't using Twitter yet you should be - I get a ton of traffic from my twitter profile every day.

Blogs need to be updated on a regular basis, for people who want to start a blog to help generate traffic to their site, remember to update it on a regular basis.
You are much better to write a small blog every day, rather than a long one, but update it once a week or even worse a month.
Search engines are looking for sites updated regularly. Also, use key words about your business and or field in your blog.. If you are talking about a network marketing business, say it 3 or 4 times in your blog... this will help you rank higher..

I like your post on pinging. Pinging actually works about as well as back linking.
I also like to creat community blog posts as well. I find blog articles that are relevant to something I have written or in the process of writing. then in another post I write out 100 traffic tips, or how to in the post title then I email every blog author/admin, if I can find there contact information explaining the incredible traffic we could share if they post the same community blog post that I have posted on my blog.
Of course they can change the intorduction. For it to work they need to keep the article titles and url's of the other authors. If you do this with 20 or a 100 diffrent blogs... depending on there traffic, it could be a flood of traffic to your site and theres.

Okay, I'm sure the syndication topic has been mentioned, but
I've got a tip for spreading your content on autopilot:
Sign up for LiveJournal, Multiply, Vox, and Blogger, Xanga.
Get Crosspress plugin and Live+Press plugin for your WORDPRESS platform blog..
Use CrossPress to "post by email" to Multiply, Blogger, and Vox.
Use Live+Press plugin to syndicate to Livejournal. (Only paid members can "post by email", so here is a free alternative)
Alternative: You could also use Posterous to update Blogger, Livejournal, and Xanga. This way you don't even have to use the Livejournal plugin (Live+Press)
Wordpress> Posterous >Blogger, Livejournal, and Xanga
Wordpress> Multiply
Wordpress>Vox
This will post the FULL POST onto these sites.
Next.. you probably know about this but...
Use Twitterfeed to connect to your blog. Then, have twitter feed also
connect to Ping.fm.
On Ping.fm, sign up for a few social networks. Now, when you update
your blog, it will push out to ping.fm, and from there it will update your status(your post link) for
all the social media sites you signed up for. (Your post link will be sent to multiple networks)
Blog==>>Twitterfeed==>>Ping.fm==>> All social media sites.
Walaa! You have now spread your content further onto the net. More chances of people coming back to your main site! =)

An excellent resource on use of blogs to increase visibility and therefore traffic.
Commenting on other blogs however requires patience and consistency for it
to yield any dividends.

Alright , so you've been blogging or thought about making
a blog and expect to make some extra cash from advertising,right?
Well, here's another idea. It's called 'list-building.' If you've
ever heard the term "the money is in the list", here is why its
true...
You've got to get people coming back to your blog because thats
the only way you're going to make a consistent income, right?
Sure, you've got an RSS subscription link on your blog, but thats
only useful if your subscribers CHECK to see if you've updated through
their RSS readers.
Another, and better alternative is sending them emails through your
auto-responder to remind them of updates on your blog. This goes straight
to their inbox and grabs their attention. Why get their email address?
Because now, not only can you update them on your blog posts, but
you can even promote affiliate or your own products to them and make
even more cash!

| I agree 100% with the term the money is on the list. That's 8o% of my focus right now. The bigger the list one can build the more chances of to generate money from.
